Had quite a nasty accident this week, my first in 15 months of cycling, wish i could say my last but who knows when and where mr unlucky will hit next!! Needless to say not riding for a while and my bike will be spending a few days in the intensive care unit at the bike shop, hope it wont cost me too much to repair. I also ended up in the emergency room to find out my pain was caused by a small fractur/chip on my hip, lots of nast burns & scrapes to deal with as well, everything seems to be on the mend, so i hope to back in central park sooooon! I guess it could have been worse so I wont complain too much. Any one else had a bad fall to tell us about? Take care all.

Yvonne,
I am so sorry to hear about your crash! How did it happen? I fractured my pelvis in three places this spring (there's a link to my blog below for further details) and am riding again now, but it's been a long road. I was lucky in retrospect that I didn't slide across the pavement to abrade and scrape the skin as it sounds like you did - those sorts of injuries can be the most painful of all!
I guess they aren't going to be able to do anything for your hip other than let it heal? I had surgery to put my pelvis back together, but my fracture was all the way from the outer edge of my ilium into my sacroiliac joint.
Even without surgery, it will likely take you awhile to be back to where you were with your cycling. Take good care of yourself and hopefully it won't be too long or difficult a recovery period. I'm sending healing thoughts your way!

Yvonne -
I hope that you're back to normal soon. I know what it's like to be separated from your bike by injury - I somehow flipped over the handlebars last year , taking the bike with me, and landed on my helmeted head. It took me the better part of a year to totally recover from that crash, but I was back on my bike in 6 weeks, after the orthopedic surgeon told me that my pelvic fracture was healed. If you're interested, the story of my crash and recovery / return to cycling is at http://denise2004crash.crazyguyonabike.com.
It sounds like your own recovery should be much faster than mine was - but give yourself time to heal, and listen to your body. I'm sending healing wishes your way.

How scary!
Thank goodness you are doing *OK*. Sounds like some healing for you and your bike is in order.
Best of luck getting back on your bike real soon!

hey Yvonne, I once had a nasty fall in Central Park also, resulting in a ride in the Central Park Medical Unit ambulance! The 'traffic' can get a little wild in the park sometimes.
hang in there and heal fast!

Ouch Yvonne! I'm glad you're there to tell the story at least.
I also had a good fall at the beginning of the July, slipped on sand while cornering. Luckily it cost me more in bandage for my cut knee and elbow than in repairs for my bike as I fell on my left side.
Heal fast !!!

Healing thoughts beaming your way. Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Hope I will continue upright and out of trouble myself...come close a few times since the first one. Only fell once when I first learn clipless, been a few months. Knock on wood :p
Hey, Yvonne!
That first fall is kind of like an initiation, isn't it? I mean, with cycling, falls happen, injuries happen, and then your riding buddies get to tell you all their fall stories and injury stories and cheer you on as you recover! It's like you've now "become a biker" :)
And these girls at TE are the best at all of that supportive encouragement! We've all been there at some point.
If you get a chance, do tell us how the crash happened, and what your (and your bike's) injuries are! I sure hope you recover quickly and completely. Hang in there! It's never fun to be off the bike, but just know that you'll get there one day and it will be so wonderful!!
Also, there are many things you can do to aid in your recovery, including nutritional supplementation, physical therapy and exercise. Let us know what you're recovering from and I bet you'll get all sorts of ideas for healing!
Hugs,
~T~

Ouch Yvonne... lots of calcium and iron rich foods and plenty of orange juice or tomatoes to help absorb the minerals your bones and muscles need to heal...
First crash is always a bit of a surprise... glad it is only the bike in the intensive care...

hi yvonne,
i hope by now you are feeling better. i took my bike plunge on labor day in pt washington if you are familar with long island.
i fractured my rt shoulder. excuse the typing because i am rt handed.
have you heard of the pumpkin patch ride in new jersey. my husband, brother, his girlfriend and my friend are suppose to ride it oct 2nd. we were going for the century, depending on time might only do the 50 or 65. now we will just have to see week by week because. we booked hotel rooms any way and although my group has one for all attitude, i will want them to ride anyway if i cannot.
my friend is the only one of our group that has done it before. it is a really nice route, 25, 50, 62 or 100 miles nothing more than some rolling hills, it is basically flat. you might interested in this ride next year or future years. i can get you the info if you are. you a long sleeve tee shirt for early registration and it has great food at the stops and at the end wonderful apple and pumpkin pies for all.
needless to say i we will be there next year and i will ride ever so extra careful for months before.
take care of yourself and wishing you a speedy recovery.

Hi, Jo! Sorry about your shoulder! yikes! That sounds like the injury I had 7 or is it 8 years ago....I broke my humerus in 2 places, required surgery to place 3 pins that stayed in for 4 weeks. It was a heckuva learning experience.
I learned long after that physiotherapists can do ultrasound on broken bones and that helps them heal faster. See if you can start on the physio right away? I also learned that any exercise you do with your good side will benefit the injured side something like 30% or so....must be the endorphins moving around or something. So, go for some nice light weight workouts to help heal!
And, yes, take advantage of the forced relaxation to find something that really delights you. I got into photography beause of the broken shoulder, and it's been a very cool thing for me...might even turn into a different career at some point...
I'm sending you lots of healing light and happy energy! You'll do an awesome job of recovering!
And lots of the same to you, Yvonne!
Namaste,
~T~

Hi yvonne, that doesn't sound like any fun at all! I hope you and the bike both heal quickly.
