View Full Version : Running in the Heat--July 5 - 11

Thought it was time for a new thread!
So I was supposed to run on Monday--being off work and all. But we had a very rainy 4th of July weekend and continued to rain the 5th.
So out of bed early before work this AM, did a 4 miler. Takes me a good mile to get my pace faster than a 12 mm, then did about 11:15 - 11:40. Wasn't terribly hot, bit of a breeze.
So I am doing an 8 week until 1st or PR 5-K plan from Women's Running. Just felt if I had a plan I might be more motivated and stick with it. So we shall see!

We did an 8 miler over the weekend and a 30 min trail run off the mt bike today.

I did a brick this morning. It's actually not very hot here. It was only about 70 when I ran. It's very windy and that made the ride portion interesting. :p
Now the thermometer says it's 80 degrees but we've got our usual delta winds keeping it cool. It's a steady 18 - 20 mph wind today. Nice, I don't have to turn on the air conditioner!
Tomorrow I've got a 90 minute run on the books. I hope it's as cool.
Veronica
Well, I haven't run at all the past two days--it's just too darn hot here!! Mid to upper 90s and humid. And it's 93 degrees in the house (no air conditioning). Yuck. Tomorrow I will be out of town for a job interview (which is Thursday morning but I'm not driving 4.5 hours each way in one day!) and will try to find a park or something in the area to run in if it isn't too hot (it might be though; it's directly west of where I am). I don't think I could ever live in the south...I wouldn't be able to handle that much heat! I'd rather deal with snowy winters.

I ran this morning because I was too lazy to ride. It turned into more of a run-walk, but i still got a good work out. It was cooler (72) at 6:30 this morning than it was yesterday, when i rode at 5 AM and it was 79. But, it's more humid and the fleas/mosquitos are out. I did a little over 3 miles. I am sick of this heat. Now I remember why I did indoor activity at the gym when I lived in AZ.
Jolt, where are you interviewing???
I'm interviewing at a hospital in Syracuse, NY. Getting ready to head out right now!

H.O.T. again....8.5 miles last night. Starting to wonder why I picked such a hot ironman. Louisville is known for being hot and hilly, and I figured, hey, I live in Atlanta, I'm used to Hot and hilly...in fact, that's all I have to train in. yuck.
Feeling recovered from running in the sauna last night, which is good, since I have a ride today in it :p Sorry, I know we are all suffering in the heat, I just had to voice a complaint out there in the universe!

I did an amazing 3 miles along the beach of Lake Michigan last night. The waves were breaking shore under my feet. The air had just started to cool and the water temperature was so warm and inviting. Watched the sunset as I ran and then went for a refreshing swim to cool down.
Best. Run. Ever.

Limewave - that sounds amazing!
I got home from work last night, watered the animals and then changed into running clothes. I took a new route up my road which starts with a 0.5 mile hill (no time for warm-up!). There was no shade and it was 94F when I left. I had water with me, but my plans were to only run 1.5 miles out and then turn around. I made it to 1.75 miles before I made a u-turn and ended with a 3.5 mile run that took me 45 minutes. I actually felt fine while running and I took a walk around our property as my 'cool down'. When I got back inside, I immediately returned my husband's call (he's out of town) and I almost passed out while on the phone with him. I saw myself in a mirror and was shocked - I was beet red (unusual for me) and SOAKING wet - everywhere. We have no AC, so it took me a bit to cool down using wet towels and a fan. Luckily, our water comes out of the ground quite cold, so it was refreshing, but ugh.
I hate heat. Today I'm swimming instead - it's supposed to hit 100F. Yuck.
I think we've had 2 days over 80F this year and then we get hit with this. Oy. I guess I can't complain - it could be worse...I could still live on the east coast. ;)

Lime, that's wonderful! :)
I'm still hesitating to run in this heat. It's been impossible to acclimate - last week's highs were in the low 70's and now it's mid-90s. It's supposed to cool off tomorrow. I've taught at the gym three days this week, rode Monday (not so bad cycling in the heat), and swam  today for the first time in Amphitrite knows how long. Maybe a run tomorrow.

Ran about 3 today - it was more like a jog. It was 80 degrees, I am trying my darnedest to acclimate and be careful because I'm still in recovery. Also, my dog hates the heat, we stopped 3 times so she could pant in the shade for a minute, so I stretched my hip flexors/hamstrings. ;)
I am racing a sprint tri (about 5 blocks from my house) this weekend. I will probably do yoga tomorrow and a quick check/test ride on Saturday. Haven't seen the water since Ironman, the local pool is STILL closed (and a week behind, so it won't be open until about the 19th). This race will basically be a "push hard as long as you can because it'll be over faster if you do" race. I will be wiggling on my VFF Sprints for the run - if they wear into the bottom of my feet without socks on, I will be looking to try the Bikila barefoot and stretch them so I can get them on fairly quickly. I know I can't wear the KSOs barefoot, even for 3 miles. If the Sprints or the Bikila don't work, I will have to *gasp* wear shoes or explore some flats.

We did a 50 min run this morning. Dare I say....it was hot and humid.
At the end of the run, this wet stuff started to fall from the sky. We had no idea what it is...I went home and googled it. It is a substance called rain. I have heard of it before, but not seen it.....
It fell for about 30 mins before it stopped and the big, yellow heat-o-lator in the sky came back out ...... and cooked my brain.....

Sometimes the summer rain is a relief, and sometimes it just makes it seem more hot. ;)

Ran 3.5 very hot, humid miles early this morning. I had to keep running because if you stop for a minute, the deerflies and horseflies start dive bombing you. They love sweaty skin for some reason.
Rode to the pool last night, swam 1/2 mile then rode home. I'm doing a sprint tri in a couple of weeks and am concerned about the heat. I'm afraid it's going to be miserably hot.

3.5 on the treadmill today. Had new music on the MP3 player, so felt pretty upbeat. Too hot/humid to run outside this time of year unless you can get up early to do so, and I just can't seem to do that!
Day 4 of not running due to the heat...when will it stop? Tomorrow I am definitely either running or swimming. Enough of sitting on my derriere!

Yuck! As for being beet red and soaking wet, that is most definitely NOT unusual for me! When I run in warm weather I always end up soaked in sweat and looking (and feeling) like I am about ready to spontaneously combust! I wonder why it is that some of us turn more red than others.

Yeah, I'm normally a little red, but not THAT red.
I did want to give props to my running capris that I wore that day, though. It was the first time I'd worn them and I was amazed at how cool my legs felt while running! They are these from Nike (on sale):
http://store.nike.com/index.jsp?sitesrc=uslp&country=US&lang_locale=en_US#l=shop,pdp,ctr-inline/cid-1/pid-294494/pgid-307387
I have issues with shorts rubbing between my legs, so capris are usually the most comfortable for me. BUT, I also overheat easily (I'd move to Alaska if my southerner husband would go with me) so I'm usually pretty miserable with black fabric on my legs. These were totally different. They breathe well, they wick well, the mesh on the back of the knees is awesome and they didn't start to fall down which often happens when you have huge legs and a small waist/hips. I think I need to order a second pair!!

This is a very personal question, but we do this all the time, so... ;) Do you wear them commando, and do they creep into your crack if you do? I bought a pair of brooks compression-ish running shorts that I really like, but I wear a pair of running shorts over them because I would rather not share that much about my anatomy with others. ;) I usually wear tri shorts for running but when I'm at the gym, or we're traveling, I like to wear capris.

Funny you should ask - I've spent my adult life in yoga pants or compression capris and shorts for athletics. They have always been more comfortable for me than baggy things so I have gotten accustomed to the 'lycra' look. When I started cycling, I never batted an eyelash at wearing lycra bike shorts, even on my super-sized rear end. BUT, until I started riding in chamois shorts, I always wore underwear. Now that I'm used to going commando, I'm not sure how to wear my other non-chamois bottoms now!
I even thought about it as I got dressed in those capris the other night but I opted to wear my underwear as I would typically do. I'll try them commando the next time and let you know if they go places they shouldn't. Based on the nice fabric and fit, I don't think they will. But again, I'm used to the butt hugging effect of lycra bottoms and it doesn't bother me in the least, so I might not be a good judge.

Yeah, I don't have that problem with my Zoots either, and this is actually one of the first pairs of shorts I *have* had the problem with, but I usually buy tri shorts. I put up with it the first couple times I ran in them, but it just made me feel like I had a giant wedgie, which doesn't happen in other shorts, then made me self conscious about wedgies and camel toes and I gave in and put other shorts on top. I can ignore the wedgie (I am good at knowing the difference between discomfort that will hurt later and discomfort that won't), but it did creep me out. ;)

Yeah, it took a lot for me to consider it. I'm pretty tolerant of the close to the skin clothing and actually prefer it (so much less chafing!!!) but it occurred to me when I switched back and forth between the new pair and my zoot tri shorts that they were possibly going where no short has gone before. ;)

I, too, cannot wear reg running shorts due to inner thigh rubbing. I always weat lycra thight fitting shorts, always commando. Never had any creeping up the butt. I do have problems finding running "tights" that are shorts & not capri length.

Had my lowest weekly mileage in months this week-- and it felt good! Still ran almost every day, but mostly little short ones. Today, my "long" run was all of 8 miles, and I wasn't planning on going that far but I took a couple detours around some road construction.
As far as shorts go, I'm usually in baggy boys athletic shorts. Hey, they work for me-- the rise is high enough that I can bend over to retie a shoe without showing more skin than I'm comfortable with, and the pockets are functional for carrying what I need. And they're cheap.

I can't run in this heat and humidity. While I can ride, that's not so great, either. I feel for those of you who live in places where it's like this all of the time.
Today was my rest day. Since I am unsure as to whether my ride tomorrow will be a go (rain), I decided to walk to the farm stand, get my lettuce and raspberries, and return home. My guess is that it's about 1.75 miles to the farm stand. Of course, it was 11:38 when I left, 87 degrees and 34% humidity. Once I get down my hill, it's shady, though. The whole trip took me about 55 minutes, including my time buying my produce. Thankfully, lettuce and raspberries are not too heavy in a backpack.
It was damn hot! I brought one of my 10 oz. bottles from my Nathan pack and it was gone before I got home.
Despite the impending rain, it is going to remain hot and humid through the weekend and then just hot (90's) next week.
Forty degrees sounds pretty good to me right now.

Forgot to update here, I ran 3 or so miles today with my dog. It was nice and cool, only got into the 70s today. Still tshirt and sweating weather, but we only stopped for resting in the shade once.
At the pace I have been running many of my maintenance runs, she likes to run in the grass alongside me. I like it because it keeps her at pace without her falling behind like she does on pavement. It's also easier on her feet and keeps her away from many distractions. She hasn't been well-exercised since Ironman, only a few runs and a couple walks, and it was cooler today, so she's got a little more energy than usual and wanted to run a little faster. I felt like my hips and quads were starting to creak, so we had to slow down. ;)
I'll go back to yoga and riding for a few days, and run again soon. I do enjoy running the cooler days, though. I hope to put back some short/few riding intervals this week as a test, and will do the same with running next week.

Talk about running in the heat, try Florida July thru Sept. I went out a bit too late Monday morning at 8:30, it was a sauna. Garmin battery died after about 1 mile. Have no idea of my pace, very hot, few short walks & just did 3.4 mile loop. Plan today was to get up at 6, have my coffee & out to run by 7 before it gets too hot. But I sit here playing with the cats. Maybe I'll be.out there by 7:30.
I am joining a running group for my 1/2 marathon training this weekend. So I will have a schedule of runs & have to be accountable.

Well I did 3.4 miles today. Was not as hot as yesterday. I am starting to get back to a 11 mm pace. I know not stellar, but given the heat and my iradicate running I'm pretty ok with it. So I am joining a running group. They are training for either the Disney half or whole marthon which is early Jan. But some of their target "training" races include the half marathon I am doing in Nov. I want to PR...so under 2:10. This sat is firt meeting and we do a 5k "time trail" to find out what running group we fit in. So my 5K time today was 35 min. Of course I am sure if I start with a slower group but continue to work on my speed I can move up a group.
Crankin (and all of you non hot weather runners),
You can imagine my amazement when I see people out running at NOON here in the summer. Even 5 -6 PM running is miserable, very hot evening sun here. So IF I don't get out in the morning then I don't run. Good news is when we finally have cooler mornings in October (occ. in sept) then my speed "jumps" up. Amazing how running in the low 70's can lead to a quicker pace.

katluvr - when I lived down there (Tampa, St. Pete and Clearwater) I either ran before the sun came up, or I tried to shoot for 5pm during the thunder showers. I didn't mind being soaked, but I hated being hot! I HATE heat. I cannot believe that I lived in FL for 7 years and didn't hide inside the entire time!
Though to be fair, NC was hotter in the summer. THAT sucked.
Anyway, I'm sure happy to be in the PNW!! I ran last night after work and it was about 72F. It was a glorious run, truly. I was really, really enjoying it until the last leg on the way back. I had some digestive issues that I really tried to ignore/control but I couldn't. I had to run/walk the last half mile or so and I barely made it to the restrooms in my building (I run from work). :o Phew! I was more than a little bummed because I was feeling so good that I was going to go further than usual, too. Oh well.
I did wear those capris commando and they were very comfortable. No migration into places they didn't belong! I also utilized the tiny zip pocket on the back of the waist band for my cell and it worked great...I totally didn't even notice it was there. I saw that D1ck's carries these same bottoms ($45), so I might have to pick up another pair in a different color in the near future.

My knees have been achy the past few days, and that's highly unusual for me. This morning, I figured it out-- for the past week I've been cat-sitting for my brother. So twice a day I've been taking the stairs up to his 7th floor apartment. No wonder the knees are complaining!
Today was an easy 4 miles, with a great view of the sunrise. Almost makes me glad for the heat and humidity, otherwise I'd likely not be out and about so early!

Awesome! I think I'll try a pair.
Finally got out for a run today after three days of no real exercise (insanely busy) and boy did it feel good to get out on the trails! I'm trying to figure out why I can only seem to manage 11-12 minutes per mile though--it's not like these trails have super steep hills, more rolling. Maybe it has to do with all the twists and turns, and all the dodging of rocks and roots. The good thing was that I checked my heart rate at one point when I felt like I was working pretty hard and it was only 180 (this is really not bad, for me!).

We're way past the 11th, but I did run today with my dog. It was a little hot by the time we got out, so I expected to have to stop in the shade. We had planned to go to a BBQ, but we were going to make a cold pasta salad first. The dog was "invited" as she's a kid-friendly and people-friendly dog. Thought we'd get a run in to tire her out a little bit.
She only stopped 3 or 4 times (I did some side planks and boat poses while I waited ;)) before we got about a mile from home (3 of 4) near the park, where they were doing a canine carnival hosted by some church. They did a blessing, petco was there with free frisbees, a few other vendors and the humane society/local pet shelter with a couple of puppies/adoptable dogs. We got a frisbee, smelled a bunch of other peoples' dogs, then went to continue for our last mile home. I wasn't sure if she would make it without stopping (or just walking).
Well, it was at this point in our walk when she decided to drink from a sprinkler puddle (low land spot full of water from sprinklers that had ran earlier). That's fine. She walked into the puddle, which was about a foot deep. That's fine. Then she lied down in it. Rolled side to side. And was covered in dirt (but satisfied). We got home and she got a cold hose dog bath, and we stopped at the store to pick up quick BBQ potluck salad instead of doing anything by hand. :p
At the BBQ, we were split evenly large to small humans, and I pushed a lot of kids (about 10 aged everywhere from 2 to 8) each around the yard in a little tikes car for what must have been 2+ hours. I think that might have been longer distance than my entire jog with the dog. I did emerge supreme, though - all the kids gave up before me. ;)

LOL! Good job!
I came really close to blowing off my run on Saturday but then my husband asked "I thought you were going for a run?"...so I did. I did 3.5 miles with just over 5 minutes of that barefoot (in the middle of the run on the short stretch of sidewalk). While my barefoot shoes don't hurt my feet when I run, they are no match for true barefoot running. Running with nothing on my feet is so flippin' FUN!

Just had to post my Sunday run. I was visiting my son and his wife last weekend and the town was having an 8K Run-A-Muk that my daughter-in-law and I decided to do. We started at the state park, ran to the dam of the river that flowed through town (5.1 miles) then jumped in an inner tube and floated the 5 miles back to the start. It was a blast!!!
