They are going to be in town close to my birthday, so I'm buying myself tickets for a present. They are at Radio City Music Hall which I guess is good for them because it means they are successful. But somehow the Avetts at Radio City seems so wrong.

I know nothing about them, but I love the 2 or 3 songs I've heard them play on XM radio. I have an email in my inbox that I wrote to myself to GET THEIR DANG CD and I still haven't gotten it. Too busy. Don't even know where my Ipod is.
Are they some kind of alternative counterculture thing or what? Too cool for RCMH?

Okay, I just read their wiki entry.
Which CD do you recommend I get first? I could potentially love them like I love Barenaked Ladies.

I first saw the Avett Brothers when they were opening for BR549 a few years ago. I asked an Avett fan what type of music, and they said "Imagine if the Ramones played bluegrass." I can't beat that description.
Here's my current favorite (not as lively as they can be, but nice):

Very popular at our house.
They are a current favorite play by our teen sons and hubby & I enjoy when they pop up on our sat-radios.
Our eldest son plays several songs on his guitar.

I would love so much to be able to see them! So far I've only listened to their most recent album via iTunes, I and Love and You, but I want more!

Oh, I so want to post my opinion, just to see Zen roll her eyes!
(yes, I can see Zen roll her eyes through my computer screen, really I can!)

Reviving this thread to say the concert was last night and the Avetts were awesome! If you get a chance to see them, go.
The audience was so enthusiastic. It reminded me of the sixties/seventies when people my age lived for the music, knew all the words to the songs and so forth.
Everyone stood up through most of the concert -- which I guess could be obnoxious, but it seemed so sincere. Thank goodness for biker muscles and music-fueled adrenaline because I stoop up to and didn't get tired.
