NYC wants to remove ghost bikes (http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2010/06/21/2010-06-21_ghosts_set_to_disappear_city_aims_to_remove_bikedeath_memorials.html).

I'm glad to see a push to removing abandoned bikes (or bike parts). Those are a huge eyesore, a waste of space, and a sign of real irresponsibility on the part of bikers.

I have mixed feelings about ghost bikes. Especially on the bike path, which seems safe but really isn't, they are a reminder to pay attention. But they do take up much-needed space in some cases, and I can see how they are viewed as an eyesore.

I believe there is already an ordinance around here that requires their removal after a few weeks (same thing for other impromptu memorials). If I recall correctly the city says they are a hazard as they cause a distraction to motorists.....

This is the start of the ghost-bike series of Yehuda Moon comics. My favorite is when Yehuda retaliates by sneaking out and striping bike lanes.

People who post "Ghost bikes" aren't supposed to leave them with components on. You're supposed to strip them, paint them white. Leave them as a tribute to someone killed by a car while cycling/with plaque saying their name/d.o.d. We posted one in my city for a homeless man who was struck at night. It felt right to honor him. I hope it made drivers on that road think. They removed it within a week.

Apparently the city reversed its decision and ghost bikes will stay (http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2010/06/21/2010-06-21_city_nixes_plan_to_remove_ghost_bike_tributes_after_outcry_from_families_of_dead.html).

I'm surprised that they are tolerated, especially after reading here that other cities mandate their removal.
