View Full Version : How many bikes do you own?

itself

Well, I own three. My Bacchetta Aero 24, my Trek Fuel, and my tandem trike. Some of the folks on bentrideronline.com own a stable of bikes. I just don't get it, you can't ride them all at once!

But I have to admit, I have my eye on Lightning P-38. I took one for a test ride the other day, and oh my, what a fun ride!!

http://www.lightningbikes.com/p38.htm

The most comfortable recumbent you will ever ride, and boy, it climbs hills extremely well!

You can't ride a skinny tire road bike on a dirt road.
And you can't ride a Tuesday bike on a Wednesday ;)

I have 2, both the same maker, but different materials. I'm set for a while, but I think I'd be in trouble if I test rode a Moots.

I have 4:

2 road- the first generation was a second hand C-dale purchased from a friend which has been upgraded to a C-dale SuperSix.

2 mountain-a 26 inch wheel Titus and a 29 inch wheel Salsa.

Most people that mt bike a lot, or race have 2. My DH just cracked his frame and it tokk 5 weeks to replace. He missed 2 races because he does not have a back up any longer. Needless to say, we will be getting a second bike for him sometime soon.

I have three, but they are spread out at two different houses. That's how I justify it. I ride the steel single speed in Georgia on the farm roads and here in Miami I have the carbon hotness for tri's and the hardtail mountain bike with slicks for the trainer or whatever. I did eye a hot tri bike...hhhhmmmmm!

That's it - thank you Zen!
I was looking for an excuse (and possibly one that I haven't already used) to go shopping for another bicycle ;)
If we look at one for each day of the week... I now have room for 3 more! :D

4.

The mountain bike
The road bike
The commuter road bike
The (currently being welded) cyclocross bike

Already have plans for the 5th, a touring/commuting road bike, but it will probably replace the current commuter.

I have two.

My old 1997 Trek 730 that is still in excellent condition. I'm keeping her because I love the steel frame.

My new 2010 Specialized Vita Comp. Still getting used to her.

A nice road bike for nice weather
A travel bike with S&S couplers and easier gearing
A road bike with fenders and cheaper components for rain and slush
A hybrid outfitted with studded snow tires
A cheap bike attached to the trainer.

So, that would be 5 in active circulation...but I will have to consider the concept of a Wed. bike....

Technically I have 2...my beloved Cdale road bike and a POS Schwinn mtn. bike that I haven't used in years. It's way too big for me (I was fit by some teenage boy at the shop and didn't have a clue what I needed, either) and was never comfy...weighs a ton. So I'm not sure I even count that one.

Just when I think I can't list any more reasons why I love this forum... yet another one pops up lol...

YEAH... more bikes!:) lol...

I own:

4 bikes...

* 2 that fit me
(Orbea carbon road bike & Trek wsd hard-trail mtb)

* 2 that don't fit me
(1st road bike post driver's license & last road bike pre-driving that my parent's thought I'd "grow into" and never did lol)

hmmm... I think according to the bike owning laws of Zen I'm due for more;).

i've got:
- road bike
- mixte
- xtracycle (aka my minivan)
- cross bike
- the rear half of a tandem
- my husband's old road bike which resides at the in-laws' cottage in michigan (which will hopefully be replaced this summer by a cross bike instead because of exactly what Zen said earlier in the thread about skinny tired bikes and dirt roads - i want to expand my riding options up there!)

i feel like i've got pretty much all my options covered, but it doesn't stop me from coveting other bikes. i'd especially love to add one with s&s couplers.

I've got 3

Two Road Bikes - A Roubaix and a Look
One Mtn Bike - A turner

but I also have two single speeds that I've 'taken over' that really belong to my sweetie... they are all adjusted to me and he doesn't ride them but they aren't technically mine :p

I've got 3. Two road bikes (Trek) and a hybrid (Giant). But I pretty much only ride my Trek Madone these days. The hybrid is good on trails, but don't seem to have the time for that.

a road bike and a mountain bike that currently has road tires on. we get a lot of rain here for 8 months out of the year so I use the mtn bike for wet weather and groceries, errands, camping. Fenders on both bikes. No one likes a dirt/rain stripe up their butt.

I have two bikes. My Rivendell Rambouillet steel road/touring bike, and my custom steel Luna road bike. I don't feel like I need more than that, they are good bikes and I don't do lots of different kinds of riding.

I agree with a previous post about why this site rocks...

I was feeling guilty about the purchase of a 2nd bike, until I read this post. Now I know that it is okay to have more than one bike, and apparently it's okay to have many bikes :p

Just for the record, I have a road bike that I will convert to a commuter, and I will be getting a Ruby Pro. Can't wait till she is finally mine!

I have three:

an '87 steel Schwinn that I use for commuting/errands--it's got baskets and racks galore.

my hardtail mountain bike

I'll never say no to a fourth (or even fifth)...especially if it were a vintage mixte or a titanium touring bike.

I have 2 for now. A Gary Fisher HKEK mountain bike and my new Trek 520 touring/commuter bike. I had 4 but, had to sell two in order to afford a new bike this year. I plan to get a custom frame built up in the future.

Aggie_Ama
05-31-2010, 04:52 PM
I have three:

Scott Contessa 30 Hardtail Mountain bike - currently on loan to a friend who wants to try dirt but not ready to buy.

Gary Fisher Hifi Deluxe - full suspension sweetness of a mountain bike.

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Roadie - I am bummed because she is a beauty and we have seen many miles but I got to admit I was steered wrong by a LBS that didn't care because they were going under in a matter of months. May be replacing the ill-fitting frame and keeping the components. My LBS wasn't sure they could do much to dial in the fit, the top tube is way too long. :(

DH has four:
A Cannondale roadie
A Kona Jake commuter/cyclocross bike
A Stumpjumper full suspension mountain bike
A Diamondback hardtail that needs a lot of new parts. He may make it a single speed.

Four:
One road specialized dolce
One mtb titus xc
one single speed sears
one cruiser electra

Great to hear that women like to own a lot of bikes too!! Still not as excessive as the guys on bentrideronline (I am talking some own 10 bikes!)

Now, the next loaded question, because this always gives me a giggle. Do you ask you significant other for permission to get another bike? This kills me that guys think they have to get their wives permission to get another bike!

DebW

Four, but really only riding two these days. Road bike is a Peter Mooney with 26"/650c wheels equipped for commuting, touring, and long rides. Bridgestone MB-3 MTB (steel frame, no suspension) for errands, rainy commutes, and winter use. Old 80s steel road bike with sewups still ridable but not much use for it. The 1954 Raleigh 3-speed is hanging in my basement also.

I have two, my Kona Dew plus which is my "town" bike and used to commute and haul kids around and my beautiful f.s. mtn bike, a Specialized Era.
My partner has no less than four and is awaiting the arrival of the fifth, a custom steel commuter.
This means that I am due for a couple new rides (the next purchase will be a Luna for me).
In our house the appropriate number of bikes to own is n+1, where n is the number currently owned.
We always check with the other before bike (and other big) purchases, because our bikes are rather expensive and we like to involve each other in the shopping.

Get ready then - I personally own 10, with DH owning another 10 (or maybe 11). I like Zen's philosophy, but a couple more and I have two Tuesday bikes that can't possibly be ridden on Wednesday :D. I was recently asked what my favorite bike was, and my reply was that it was whichever one I was riding at the time.

And there is no permission on either side at our house - they just show up (although we are STARTING to institute the one in one out rule...).

Many of you have seen this from me before, but the optimal number of bikes is n+1.

I do actually ride my Bike Friday on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday because I keep it at the country house where I spend many weekends.

I also have a Monday bike (Luna=lundi=Monday) that Is my weekday bike that I keep at my city house.

I also have a Jamis Coda for errands and commuting, a Raleigh project bike that is still in the project stage, and a 1986 Specialized Stumpjumper that I raced when mountain bike racing was still a very new sport on the east coast. It's currently slated to become an Xtracycle one of these days.

So 3 bikes in the active rotation, and 2 project bikes.

6.5 I'm afraid - running out of excuses - but I don't have a hub-geared bike yet . . .

A road bike (Serotta)
A commuting bike (Principia)
A folding bike (Bike Friday)
An expedition bike (Trek hardtail mtb)
A full-suss mtb (Titus)
A fixie (Dolan)
1/2 a tandem (Trek)

Yeah, same kinda thing with us, although we don't live together (not even in the same state), so we don't have 22 in the same household.

I have one mountain bike, and then assorted bikes in assorted states of builds. I ride whichever one suites my mood for the day.

Whew, someone who has more bikes than I! And to boot, she's one of my favorite TE'ers!!! ;);) All of my bikes have their purpose and since I'm an endurance rider, all of them see ample pavement time.

I planned to get rid of my beater bike (aluminum frame Dolce comp) when I got the Isis earlier this year. Alas, every time it rains or the pavement is wet, I cannot bring myself to ride one of my other (steel or ti) bikes and muck it up. So the Dolce remains, despite a decided lack of adequate storage space (no garage---all of my bikes, except the one permanently mounted on the trainer, are propped against the walls of my "woman cave" (den). DH finally had enough of being told to be careful not to knock them over and ordered me some bike racks!

I sometimes forget how many bicycles I have... five in the starting rotation...
I have my Xtracycle on the Giant Nutra that gets 5-6K a year that Does Most Stuff.
I have my Trek 7500FX for the light fast rides -- my "Sunday go to Century" bike.
I have the 1968 Schwinn Racer that I got from E-bay because my brother told me it's the best bike to have and we grew up on that year and model... it needs brakes, though, 'cause the rear wheel is pre-WWII.
I have a Dahon folder to ride to Enterprise when I rent a car, 'cause i don't own one. It is also excellent for Ambiguous Tours and Weird Weather, since it has 1.25" tires that handle sleet or stones or just about anything.
I have a Gazelle Impala because that grad student sold it for a sweet price when he went back to Holland and you cannot get a Dutch commuting bike in these parts. It's the one I put studded tyres on in the winter and it goesthrough almost anything.
I also have the 1960 ladies' Schwinn Racer that really isn't mine but I ride it sometimes and it's in my garage 'cause its owner bought it intending to try to ride and it didn't work out.
I also have a Schwinn Spitfire that I bought from the guy who had to sell some of the hundreds of bicycles in his basement. It's at my friend's house.
I think that is all. I also have a few otehr bikes in the garage (since there's no car to take up the room) from the bike coop whenthey run short on room.
With a fleet of bicycles, if one breaks I have spares (since I don't have a car, this can be important). It also means when somebody's got a friend from Europe in town for a few weeks, I can loan... even if it's a family :) ... most of my bikes cost less than $800 and I have purchased one every few years, costing considerably less than what I used to pay in a year for car insurance. (This year I sprang for GPS instead of a bike... it should arrive SOON...

That's my excuse too! The Ti one for a rough but flat brevet, the carbon compact for a hilly one, the carbon triple for a mountainous long ride or touring (supported - like Ride the Rockies), another pretty Ti one when I need to feel pretty, the steel ones for short fun rides, the aluminum permanently on the trainer, another carbon one at DBF's house, a mtb... it adds up!

I figure that no matter how many bikes I have, it's always 1 less than 'too many'.

I've personally have 3 at the moment and my husband is holding steady at 4. We do have somewhat of an 'one in, one out' rule as long as we have the same number each. Or, at least, that's my take on it since I have one less than him. :p

I'm hard to fit though, so buying bikes for me is a long process and I tend to form lasting bonds with my bikes. My H is joe average in terms of size, so he buys bikes off-the-rack continuously. Seriously. It's a constant flow. If he kept every bike he'd bought in the past 5 years we'd have upwards of 25+ bikes in our garage (no joke)!

Bacchetta Giro - commuter bike
Bacchetta Corsa - fast/weekend/fun ride bike
Greenspeed X3 - trike. errand bike. I love the trike, but it's so slow I can't bring myself to ride more than ~10 miles on it, if even that.

Well I had 5.5 but I actually did an N-1 and now have only 4.5.

Two road..

My roadie/doing triathlons bike - 2008 Shogun Ninja
My new flatbar roadie - 2010 Scott Speedster S20FB

Two mountain..

The hard tail that is now on slicks and is the around town hack - 2008 Kona Lisa HT
The dual suspension that fits like a glove - 2009 Specialized Era Marathon in pink anodised finish

Half a tandem...

The captain's seat of the Holstar Roadster is mine and the DD stokes and put sup with all the jokes about "the kid back there not pedalling!":p

The departing bike was my original road bike bought to do triathlons back in the mid-1980s.

commuter
mountain bike
road bike

but ....

the mountain bike doesn't get used much and still has slicks on it from the last tour 5 months ago - need to put the knobblies on (and check the fittings for lights) so it can double as a commuter if we get snow (generally only once or twice a year here but can be anytime between June and September) - sounds like a job for the upcoming long weekend

the commuter is a real cheapie, 8 years old and not well maintained (mea culpa) - really needs new chain, brake pads, cables, cassette, bottom bracket and tyres - might be time for a new bike (although there is a limit to what my 3.5 km flat commute can justify)

still happy with the road bike.

BF has a commuter and a mountain bike - sometimes thinking about a road bike.

I officially have two, the beloved Surly Cross Check and a vintage Motobecane Nobly that is a touch too small. I am on the prowl for another one, a project single speed for commuting to work since I'm always afraid someone might steal my Surly from the ill-lit rack behind our building.

My partner has nine, but since they all fit me they can almost count.
