Is a trunk rack sturdy/stable enough to haul a couple of bikes at highway speeds? I may be taking multiple people and multiple bikes up to Dallas next weekend -- I wanna be sure the bikes make it up there with us! :D
PS Hoping to not have to spend a ton o' money, either. Is there a good CHEAP trunk-mounted rack out there?
Have you checked Performance/Nashbar?

How many bikes are we talking about?
Back when I had the red Camry, I used to transport 2 bikes with a trunk rack with no problems, on both highways and local roads.
I did once see a bike come loose from the trunk rack of the vehicle in front of me while driving to the Sea Gull Century, but the bike never fell completely off. After a couple of minutes the driver realized there was a problem, pulled over and fixed it. Nothing unusual happened to cause the bike to fall off (like hitting a huge bump at high speed) so I assumed it just wasn't put securely on the rack in the first place.
Being a bit obsessive, I always used a few bungy cords for additional attachment of the bikes to the rack, as well as to keep the front wheels of the bikes from moving.

I've used on many times with no problems. Even went from MI to CA using one but, I did use extra bungies to secure the rack (which I highly recommend) I have only had an issue once when I went too fast over an unusually large speed bump. The bikes and rack went flying...... but, in that case, I was not using any extra straps/bungies. Both bikes were fine though. A little scratched but, still ok.

I've had the tandem on the back of the Yaris. Apart from getting dirty, no problems.

Ah, good to know. Now to see what's for sale on Craigslist! (Lookin' to transport two bikes, btw.)
Thanks, y'all!

Find something that fits you car and then fasten your bikes securely and you should be fine.
