What is the name of the flat bars I see with the vertical ends? Are those part of the bars or are they bar-end attachments?

Do you mean like this? (http://images.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f2/Bar_ends.JPG&imgrefurl=http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bar_ends.JPG&usg=__-3seATWrXuM8SilVUp43jfRq1V0=&h=1200&w=1600&sz=439&hl=en&start=1&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=8SRx2pZ4ke-GeM:&tbnh=113&tbnw=150&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dbike%2Bbar%2Bends%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26rls%3Dcom.microsoft:en-US%26tbs%3Disch:1) Bar ends, and they're separate. They come in cold and uncomfortable (to me) or small and beautiful in carbon. The angle is adjustable.

Yes, that is what I mean - thanks for the link. I wasn't sure how to find a picture of them since I didn't know what they were called.
I also find this bar interesting (http://www.outsideoutfitters.com/p-7399-titec-h-bar-mountain-handlebar.aspx)...
You find those bars "interesting" while I find them, well...hideous.

Say what you really think Zen :) What I found interesting was the option for different hand positions. Attractive the H bars are not.
Thanks for the reminder about the Ergons, my Trek has a set of those. I had forgotten that they have bar end extenders like this (http://www.ergon-bike.com/us/en/product/gc3). I think this is certainly interesting - and more attractive...

How about the STI bars or the (different) H Bars here: http://store.bikefriday.com/index.php?cPath=3&osCsid=f3ef5281b5fbc852a04d9789d4dea12f
My DH has the H bars on his (non-Bike Friday) commuter with bar end shifters.
