Okay, I'm all ready to take off on my first trip out of the neighborhood on my new bike and I must say I'm a little nervous. I only have to go about 1/3 mile on a busy street until I get onto a safe bike path but my nerves are shot!

You successfully do it once, and it'll be easy in the future.
Do you have a friend that can go with you?
If not, you can still do it, dive in and go!

I certainly understand this, but just dive in and have fun! It is certainly easier the second time around - I speak from my protracted experience of TWO rides on the road :p
Please let us know how it went!

Friends? Me? I'm really not that likable! LOL! Anyhoo...I DID IT, I DID IT, I DID IT! I really was a wreck in the traffic but once I got over to the other side it was smooth sailing and a gorgeous day. I'm not sure how far I went because I haven't figured out the computer yet, but it took me an hour at a pretty decent clip. I even crossed a small bridge over the intercoastal waterway into Wrightsville Beach (NC). I'm feeling pretty darn cocky right now. That CANNOT be a good thing.

Another NC rider! Hi, I live in Wake Forest now, but grew up in your neck of the woods! Have a great time riding.

Who needs friends anyway!
Actually, I sort of laughed at that suggestion myself. I think its a good one, but I don't have anyone I could call to do that either!
Easy-peasy.

Friends?! What are those? I'm still a "ride on the sidewalk unless absolutely necessary" kind of gal.

Congratulations -- sounds like you did very well. Traffic is scary, but practice does help.

Congratulations!
As others have said, it does get easier.
It's been my experience that my imaginings are much worse than reality. Talk about being my own worst enemy! When I finally do something - ride a new route or distance - I wonder what I was so worried about??!!

Way to go!
I alternate between irrational terror and equally irrational fearlessness but it's best when I can feel quiet and just go ride.
