The article says " Bush is not interested in road biking, a long-distance endurance test in which the riders wear tight Lycra pants and often shave their legs. Bush says he won't wear Lycra or shave his legs."
Yep, not to politicise the board but I started worrying even more (if that's possible) about this country when I saw that Kerry is a roadie. He rides a Serrota. Did you see him in the team car behind Lance on the last TT? Lucky guy.
And we all know what non-cyclists think of roadies. The general public doesn't think that Bush's full-custom Trek is any different from what they bought at Target or Walmart. He's jist regular folk!
That's ok the more time he spends riding the less he's working. Ride on, Dubya, many many many happy miles. I noticed in the photo he does not seem to be wearing his mouth guard :) :D   ;)

Ok, someone go tell Robin Williams he's gotta shave his legs. :D
We aren't even going to get into the rest of him!
Yep, idiotic comment. I don't think it should matter how you dress to be on a bike. Sure, the gear is more comfortable but it's not required. Biking should belong to every person and from what I've seen on the streets it still does. :)
As for shaving, what idiot thinks you can't pedal a road bike if your legs are hairy? What, the cranks won't turn at all?? Does the hair get tangled around them or something??

no matter what side of the road you pedal on (off or on) let's not forget the fact we have an active, health conscience person in office...don't dwell on the negative or the idiotic comments or have we forgotten...
"In total, the bill will dedicate nearly $3 billion through 2009 on bicycling and walking infrastructure and programs - almost twice the amount approved in the last bill!"
I would rather have a pres out on the trail with hairy legs refusing to wear lycra (could you imagine the late night jokes if he did shave and wear lycra :p  :p  ) than in the oval office enjoying a cigar

No, you can't laugh, it's not allowed just kidding.
jokes are not only highly reccomended, they are required by the bike fashion police. And last I heard we can still joke about da Pres, the US govt, or any issue. When we can't then I am REALLY moving to Canada.
I'm surprised the bike fashion police didn't pull Dubya over for cycling without lycra. Maybe they were put off by the Secret Service.
I used to have a Hawian print jersey that said "Big Kahuna", that'd look good on him.

To each their own opinion and all that *but* when everyone hears what you say and somehow assumes you are an expert on everything you do (no, really, some people really think he knows what he's talking about on every subject that comes out of his mouth) comments like that aren't cool. The general public shouldn't assume that you have to shave your legs or wear certain clothing to ride a bike on the road (unless it's a helmet). The lot of us that wear lycra has got to be a small percentage of all people on a bike.
I do think it's cool that he is not only riding in his near-sixties but willing to encourage others to do so and put our money where his mouth is. Heck, if more people stayed fit there'd be less money spent on healthcare, right? If more people walked or rode to shops or work there'd be less polution and so on and on and on...

i think my brains fell out this morning...i actually spoke (typed  ) before i thought...i have a brutal cummute by car in the mornings and it takes a while to relax :(
not that that is an excuse but i am using it ;)
in fact...my otherhalf and i were just discussing the fact that he has reflectors on his $3000 custom trek (i saw a pic of it somewhere) and in the mtbike community that is a joke if you are a REAL  mtber. I (miss optimistic) said "maybe he is keeping those on in order to make an image for the youngsters out there?" while the other half said "it is the law for the lbs to sell the bike with reflectors!"...the conversation went on...the point is that i did not think about it that way....
heck i dont even shave my legs all the time

Even worse, it provides subtle encouragement for the yahoos out there for open season on dem 'der lycra wearin leg-shavin pansy-a$$ed road bike riders. As if said yahoos need any more encouragement.

Just did my civic duty and called the cops about the bright yellow Corvette and royal blue non-descript sports car that were drag racing tonight and came awfully close to cleaning me right off the road. Probably thought I was a wuss, out there with my new TT bars (oops that was a secret). Funny how those 'vettes just keep popping up and being a$$holes. Bubba managed to own a corvette when I met him and not join the aforementioned *****s.

Really don't want to get political, but even though I dislike W, it is good to have a president who exercises.... I agree that the stupid roadie comments are just, well, stupid! I have actually run across Kerry riding in Concord, MA and he is a serious rider. During the campaign (when i saw him) he was wearing a regular t-shirt (maybe a jersey would have been too much for the public?), with lycra and a very nice pair of Sidi shoes. His bike looks pretty nice, too! He rides the Pan Mass Challenge every year.
Anything to get more people moving is good, but the comments about roadies sort of go along with the rest of the "persona."
I apologize in advance for offending anyone's opinions!!!!!

politics aside...the whole segregation of mtbers and roadies is just plain stupid! we are all just out to enjoy, accomplish, release, recover...etc!!! no matter what kind of path we choose to pedal on!!! i in fact am addicted to both and have not felt better about myself in years...actually, i have never honestly felt this good about myself :D
our climate allows us to ride year 'round but to go out in the trails with all those bugs is just downrite crazy so on the road it is...and to brave the pavement during snowbird season is even crazier...hiding away off road is where you will find most cyclist around here. most people i ride with and meet around here go both ways...makes for double the conversation ;) we even have the bmxer nuts mixed in the bunch!
...i guess i didn't take the comment but just friendly rivalry (again always looking for the good side) i am one of those people that get walked ALL over cause i never could imagine anyone being mean :o
now let put a question out there...in the last few years (whether it be the two pres possibles in the last election were cyclist, the TdF, or the rising cost of gas...whatever it may be) have you noticed more cyclist out there??? or is just cause i am in to the sport now so i am just noticing the ones that have always been there???

Yep, Doctorfrau, way to focus on the important things.... :D
I don't think reflectors on a mountain bike is a bad thing, lots of us ride said bikes on the street too. They can be excused. Now the kickstand on the guy behind him could be an actual hazzard. My x actually bought one for his mtb and it'd catch on stuff and even fell off a couple of times.
I tried hard not to laugh...
And you guys think I'm a Fred, Barney, Wilma and Betty! :D
Singletrack-NO, I don't have reflectors on my mtb and I only shave when I can't get away with it anymore or if there's newly clean sheets on the bed or if I'm thinking about getting lucky. Ok, I shave them a lot.-mind

People have mentioned the mbt/roadriding division, which I think is crazy, but even worse are the big divisions within each sport.
For example, people who only ride time trials and scoff at those who do road racing, claiming they're less fit because they can sit in the bunch for 20 miles and relax.
Or ...those who only ride track and laugh at anyone who'd want to competing on the open road.
Or ...those who do cyclo-cross, whose season starts in November, just as everyone else is widing down for a months rest.
This might just be the case in the UK, but the divisions among riders of slim tyres is staggering and not at all helpful. At the end of the day we all rides bikes and as a minority sport, why all the specialisation and division?
Sorry - bit of a rant there, but lately a few member of our club have been moaning that no one is riding any events this year. Truth is, a lot of people have decided to try something new this year which I think is great - especially as some of them are not exactly spring chickens, but are willing to give something new a go.
As a TT/road club, we managed to sent 2 teams to a 24 mtb race this year. Admittedly, everyone did feel a bit 'roadie' to start with, with shaved legs and regular lycra shorts, instead of mbt baggy style ones, but everyone there was so welcoming and supportive and we didn't come across any kind of slim tyre/fat tyre snobbery at all. :)
I think we should embrace tyres of all widths. :D

I think there are more people riding (BTW, nice ride to work today) and because I ride I get questions almost every time that I ride to work "gosh, I'd like to ride more". Of course I always point the gals to here ;-)
but as for the price of gas riders my question remains how do we get what I call "economic cyclists" the riders who ride 'cause they can't get licensed or can't afford it and look freakin' miserable about it to think of themselves as fellow cyclists? Had the elevator door closed in my face by one on BART, cut off by another on a turn....
Class issue?
Do they resent me because I look like I also ride for fun?
Where's the jersey that says "Don't hate me. I'm really not rich, just a poor gal with a really cool bike!"

I would hope that people who were in the position to be forced to ride open their minds (of course without letting the contents spill all over) and realize the benefits...i was in that position years ago...fortunately it was in a cycle friendly city! and of course as the saying could never be so right..."you don't know what you have till it is gone!!!" I can't wait to be back in the bike lane side of the white line (on two wheels of course) i have missed it since the day i moved to this *look out here i come in my (insert car of choice here) i don't know who you are and don't care cause my life is so much more important than your so i will speed, cut you off, slam on my brakes in front of you, slow down to imppossible speeds, no matter the rules of the road i paid my taxes i own it don't you know drivers here* state...ooooo sorry rant over
everyone did feel a bit 'roadie' to start with, with shaved legs and regular lycra shorts, instead of mbt baggy style ones mighty
in fact the crossover here is so prevalant the mtbers wear lycra and the road rides include riders on mtbikes (knobbies and all) a true melting pot of riders here...i hope it is like that in my new hometown :)

“People have mentioned the mbt/roadriding division, which I think is crazy, but even worse are the big divisions within each sport.”
Doing my best to embrace all faiths.
Road: In addition to your plain vanilla road riding, I’ve done team triathlons and have now branched out into the LBS’ goofy TT series. The plain road riding has also been spiced up with monster hill climbs due to the proselytizing of the TE girls. I have been converted and saved from my boring flatland ways. And, Menage a deux, anyone? Tandems are fun! :p
Dirt: I’ve ridden fully rigid, hardtail, softtail, full suspension and freeride. I’m all for equal opportunity. The most talented among our dirty friends wear only lycra, including the ex-pro racers.
Bi-cycle: Built up a ‘cross bike last year. Swings both ways onto pavement and dirt. Now, the LBS boys have decided Bubba and I need to accompany them on their newly discovered levee ride. Apparently, it takes road riding to a new, um, level? You ride your bling-bling road bike with tres chic wheels off road. Crashing your Pinarello 6 or 7 times wins you more points. They’ve decided that Bubba and I are just the right customers with whom to share the new route. Gee, thanks. I think we’re riding it next Thursday.
Legs of all persuasions: I shave, Bubba shaves, we all shave. Bubba actually starting shaving because he was tired of being so dirty after a trail ride. Every leg hair would have a mud ball attached to it. So, you can shave and ride the dirt, and I’d love him even if he didn’t shave his legs.

There is also animosity between upright and 'bent riders. Some of it (I'm told, no first-hand experience) can get pretty nasty.
Humph!
If it is moved forward by human power, I'm good with it. Especially if the human looks to be having a good time.
Carbon racers, MTBs, hand cycles, 'bents of any discription (and they are many and varied), 2, 3 or 4 wheels, tandems, sociables (side by side riders), whatever. I've seen 'em all at least once on local bike paths. They all made me smile. I've even lusted after a few. They're all good.

The MinuteMan Trail Rant - I've howled over that so many times. Last time we rode Mt Tam we saw someone with his bar ends pointed back towards his chest so he could hold onto them in some backwards contortion. I had to turn around so he couldn't see me laughing.
