Subject to Pentagon approval, we have a Ride 2 Recovery (http://www.ride2recovery.com/)event tentatively slated to occur at NSWC Crane - a naval facility in INDIANA (http://www.crane.navy.mil/defaulthome.asp) on May 22.

Proceeds benefit injured veterans.

I'm on the leadership committee and I assure you that this event is being planned with military precision!

What will make this different? It's located on the remote facility meaning that there is virtually NO TRAFFIC and WELL PAVED ROADS!

This will be a first year event, so it will likely not be too crowded. It will be full of heavily wooded and beautiful routes of 15, 31, 50, and 65 miles. Lots of hills.

Check google maps for a satellite view of Crane (it's north of Loogootee Indiana...you can't miss it). It's 32 miles southwest of Bloomington - location of Breaking Away, Mellencamp's Small Town, and host to the Hilly Hundred.

Best lodging is available in Washington, Bedford, and Bloomington.

I welcome guests at my condo in Bloomington, but since Silver and I are divorcing, I'd prefer to host more than one guest to avoid any improper appearances.

Mr. S.

Sounds like a great ride. Thanks for the head's up. I'll be sure to tell Brian about it. It would provide a great opportunity for you to meet him.

Checked my schedule and it's a no go for me. I will be in Tsali NC for a 12 hour mtb race. Good luck and have fun. We'll get over your way soon.

Hmmmm, it is certainly interesting... That is a big weekend for me, but if I can make it (and I am ready for the hills by then) then I will come!

It's amazing what a difference the 45 miles between you and me makes on hill preparedness!

LOL, especially since I just learned how to ride a bike for the first time in my life :) Right now I am focusing on learning how to shift where hills are concerned - but I have to find some first :D

Actually Boone County (NW side of Indy) has some nice hills, and there is a rather large one in the park I practice in.

I couldn't find information on that website regarding the May 22 date - I am assuming that they will have something up there soon...

Come ride with me and I'll take you here:

Trust me: you don't have hills in Boone County. Get indysteel and we can meet in Martinsville...and we'll take you on a hilly fun ride that will include a brief ride along the stretch Hwy 37 filmed in Breaking Away!

And for the record, when I did RaIN two years ago, it accounted for 5% of my lifetime miles that day! You'll be surprised what you can do!

Also, I understand the Ride2Recovery info should be posted this week.

OH MY LORD  :D

When I get my Long Haul Trucker in the next couple of weeks and have time to get comfy shifting it (bar end shifters) I would love to meet you and IndySteel around Martinsville some Saturday. I was just down there so I have an idea what kind of hills they have. Boone County can be my hill "nursery" as we certainly do NOT have any in Speedway :p

Ummm, just not the Boltinghouse Hill ;)

Last year, Indysteel and I chose an "around Boltinghouse" that included a cruise "down Boltinghouse".

As long as it is "down" :o

I am looking forward to checking out these bar-end shifters. There are no shift indicators, will just have to learn it by feel. Thankfully I currently have a friend's trainer in my living room so I can "practice" a bit before taking it to my Eagle Creek Park "testing grounds". One thing is sure, I will HAVE to learn to get my hands to move around the bars to be able to shift :p

Will you post a link when there is one? May is super busy for us (husband graduating, moving to Kirksville MO, starting a new job), but my sister who lives in Bloomington might be interested in going to see the riders, if her semester is over by then.

Here's a preliminary website showing routes.

The office Ride 2 Recovery site should be up by the end of the week.

I would love to do this - pity that it isn't some other weekend. This weekend is just too booked for me already. I look forward to hearing about it though - and it is the FIRST annual, yes?

I'm the ride treasurer, so I hope it's the "first annual"...which means we'll be solvent.

The only downside is that Crane is subject to lock down in times of high terror alert...

The weather looks like it will be great!

How many opportunities do you have for up to 65 miles on a CLOSED COURSE!

Registration deadline in Monday May 17. FOR SECURITY REASONS, ALL REGISTRATIONS MUST BE COMPLETED IN ADVANCE - NO "DAY OF" REGISTRATION - There are strict security protocols required.

I would LOVE to do this next weekend - but I have to wait until I get the estimate from my LBS on the work needed on my beloved steel steed before I know if I can afford to register - and by then it will be too late.... sigh... I would love to do the 30 mile route!

Hopefully next year!
