Well, while I remain sad that my beloved Eddy Merckx was stolen, life must march on and I really must ride a bike. Fortunately, our insurance looks like it will cover replacement value as opposed to the "actual cash value" of my bike. So we started looking at bikes last weekend. There were a couple at my LBS that were possibilities; however, they just didn't move me for whatever reason. You simply can't buy my Merckx frame (new) anymore (it was scandium), and most of the manufacturers are going carbon, which really isn't my style. DH sure loved the amazing Time carbon whatever, but I just couldn't see myself on it.

And then I remembered (DUH) that I have always wanted a Pegoretti. It's really been my dream bike for years. All of their bikes look like art. So I went to the local shop that sells them, and they didn't have the model I wanted and who knows when it will ship next from Italy, so I found one in Pennsylvania and I am going to get the frame there and have my LBS guy build it up. Components are still under debate...

But here's the frame:

I am looking forward to meeting the new bike!

I've decided that rather than it reminding me of James Bond in a tux with a wild tie, it's Daniel Craig as James Bond in a tux stripping down to his swim trunks. Fast, elegant and racy wild.

a PEG! I was thinking that only a Peg can replace the Merx. Nice. And I like the Manovela (or soemthing like that) paint job.

Tis a wonderful ride.. I think you'll like :)

Penn.. Hmm.. is the Love or a Marcelo? If it's from Bikyle then it's the Love :)

Yum... yumm..

Ha. I wish. Nope. Just been looking at Pegs. Know of folks on other forums who've purchased from them. Haven't heard anything negative. The "vibe" I get is kinda neutral. Haven't heard ravings either that I recall.

Wow, that really is pretty. I see what you mean in describing it as art. It's really pretty. Do you think you'll go for high-end parts? All Red components?

Is that a racing bike or plush one built for doing longer rides like centuries?

May I ask what sort of insurance coverage you have that covers a stolen bicycle? I want to make sure my bike is covered, too, because I often leave her in the Rav when I'm at work or at the Y or shopping.

Did you have to provide some sort of market value for an equivalent bike, or did you have your bike on a rider already, in detail?

Thanks!
Roxy

I am going with campy record 11. we have always been campy people.

the insurance is our homeowners insurance. we specified we want coverage for replacement value of our personal property (as opposed to actual cash value, "ACV"). if you only have acv, depreciation is factored in and you get nothing. we certainly wouldnt be buying this bike. we were concerned if there was a fire (a real possibility where we live) we wouldnt be able to replace our business clothes, etc.

ETA racy v. plush: it's their scandium frame. could do anything.

Thanks, Jo! I will post some close up nice pics tomorrow, but we were too busy rushing around and making up for ditching the kid all day to go ride....

We picked up the bike so late last night I did not ride it at all, not even around the block. So it was a huge leap of faith to take a brand new bike on a 70 mile ride with some extended climbs, but the bike was AMAZING. Snappy, light, responsive. It just wants to GO. I was a bit nervous about the compact gearing, but it really was great, and I have the nice IRD dinner plate cassette on back (well, ok, a dessert plate). I suspect with any gearing you'd want a little easier gear at the top wall of Diablo, but honestly the rest of the time was fine. And I didn't miss the in between gears you lose with the compact at all. So DH will not be trading me his triple for the new Record 11 stuff (that was our backup plan if I didn't like this). The new Record shifts so snappy and smooth.

Great job on the ride, BTW. And nice to see Thom and V.

Oooh.. nice. Thanks, Jobob!

We need some glamour shots though so we can truly drool.

I've heard Dario does amazing things w/ alum; that while it's retained the weight of alum, he's given it many of the ride qualities of steel. And that this bike is a "rocket." It's built to GO. Should be stiff and fast but still somewhat chatterless and smooth.

How did you feel at the end of the ride? Would you say it's an all day rider?

And what's the IRD cassette size on there? Looks like it's respectively normal enough to still keep the record rear der. 13-29 or something?

maillotpois
04-11-2010, 07:14 AM
It is a 12 - 30 cassette actually. :) Works fine with the compact double derailleur. And while being fast and responsive, it is definitely an all day ride. We had a 70 miler with 6500 - 7000 feet of climbing over some rough roads and I was fine after. Definitely felt better than I have the last few long rides with my backup bike. I honestly cannot imagine carbon feeling as light and responsive as this.

Here are some glamor shots:

Carbon is good; Record is better:

I was afraid the new Record shifters would be noticeably larger then the old ones, but they are not. And you can do a very cool aero position with them, bracing the palm of your hand on the horn and leaning down on the bar. Very stable.

Hoo, meee, cranky??

I was so freakin' whupped on the Morgan Territory climb that at the rest stop at the top of the climb I parked my bike and just sat for a bit. Then I started to get re-organized, but by then all I wanted was to just stop and be done with it; I was actually crying a bit at the thought of getting back on my bike(!!).

My poor coach (who is a stickler for taking very brief stops) then asked me if I was ready to go. At about that point I was ready to just pick up my goddamn bike and throw it over the fence. Instead, I threw the rest of the sandwich I was trying to force down.

Heh, I'm nothing if not a prima donna. :o

I then got back on said goddamn bike and continued on the ride. Fortunately for me, and for all concerned ;) , it was practically all downhill from there, so I was feeling much better (physically and oh-so-emotionally) by the end of the ride.

MP.. awesome build. And love the Edge fork (did you like the edge fork?). The Edge forks just look right w/ Pegs for some reason.

I hope you're overjoyed with it and that's it has somewhat lessened the bite of losing the Merckx.

I also agree re: w/ it riding better than carbon. Kris @ Above Category said he test rode the shop's Parlee and he couldn't wait to get back on his Marcelo. He just missed the ride.

Jobob - dude, don't even. I bow down to you both you guys for doing this ride. Looks more than respectable to me uh.. since I haven't done that much climbing in one ride.. EVER.:eek:

While you guys were doing that monster ride.. my butt was tootling along on the Cindy :cool:

Rogue -

We saw a lot of Cindy riders on our return. Nothing wrong with that ride - did that for many years AND I admit to taking the lemon drop yesterday. It was quite the pick me up. :)

I do like the Edge fork. With this bike a shinier black would probably look better, but the matte finish is pretty cool. I have to say I took the descents pretty slowly (as we're just getting to know each other), but the bike was rock solid, even in the gusty wind.

You should come out for a ride with us one of these days and meet it in person....
