I'll be setting up another chart. Anyone interested in joining us for the next two months, just post here and let me know. I'll add you in to the chart and post a link to it by the end of the week.
Weigh in on Friday 5 March 2010 (or soon thereafter, whatever works for your own schedule) and post it here along with your goal for the end of April. I'll add you on in to the chart!
Here's to a successful two months for all of us!

Tucker Cat has to lose another two pounds. The vet thinks he should be a 13 pound kitty instead of a 15 pound kitty. Well, really 15.5 pounds. He is a little tubby. :D

I'm in. I will have my starting weight and my goal on Friday. Friday will mark the one year anniversary of TE weight loss. There have been many a time when I have thought about the Friday weigh in and made a better decision because of it. I would like to thank Possegal for all her work in keeping of the chart which has helped me loose weight and stay motivated to loose more weight, so a big THANK YOU POSSEGAL.

I've got Tucker Cat down for a goal of 13. :) Makes me chuckle because it reminds me of the dieting days with my Bailey Cat - he of my avatar fame. :)

I want in. :)
I'm new to this forum as well as cycling. Just got my first serious road bike in January and have been trying to learn all I can. So far I'm hooked! Reading everything on here is super helpful. Right now I'm working on clipless pedals. Took my first fall this weekend, but plan to get on and try again next weekend.
I'd love to have somewhere to keep track of weightloss and motivate me to keep at it. I've been on a long journey and have lost about 100 pounds in the past couple years, but I am finding the last 20-30 (I really don't even know where I should be because I've always been overweight) really challenging to get off. Cycling brought me under 170 for the first time ever, so I'm excited to keep at it and pedal off as much as I can.
So put me down for starting at 166 and the goal for this time as 158. I think eventually I am shooting for 140-150, but I'll have to see when I get there.

I actually made progress last time, so count me in again. Goal this time is ideally under 200, but I think I'll be a bit more realistic and set my goal at 205 for now.
Thank you, Possegal, for keeping track of all of us!

Thanks - it's funny how changing his food changes his behavior. Last year we took him off dry because he was FAT - 17 pounds and started both kitties on a high quality canned food. He dropped down to 15 pounds, but then gained back a 1/2 pound. Anyway, when we switched to canned it was quite apparent how lethargic he had gotten and he was only a year old.
We've reduced their canned amount from 1.5 cans a day total for the pair of them to one can. Cassie is the same as ever, but Tucker's energy level has increased again. It's weird. But it makes sense too. I guess if you're heavy, you use a lot of your energy just getting around. His current favorite toy - travel packs of Kleenex.
Anyway - thanks for including him. It helps me to keep track and stay focused since I'm really the one in charge of the kitty diet. :D

I would love to participate in this. I live in NC and we have had snow on the ground since Dec. 18. My husband and I have ridden a couple of times..but most of my workouts are on my trainer. I weigh 143 and would like to be 135 by the end of April. I have never posted or been part of any threads...so this part is new to me. Do we now post our weight each week????
Thanks for doing this thread.

Hi All!
Can I come back? I think I'm finally getting into the right place mentally to begin my weight loss journey again. I'd love to join you all!
I don't know my current weight so once I weigh-in tomorrow, I'll set my goal. I'm shooting for 1% a week - so my end of April goal will be 8% down (assuming this challenge is 8 weeks long). :)
Thanks!

I was 129.5 this moring, so let's start me there. I'm trying to weigh myself less often, so I don't plan to get on the scale tomorrow. Put me down for a goal of 127. I made it halfway there in the last challenge, and am hoping for the other half on this one!

Welcome to all new and returning folks!
Anyone new, here is basically what we do. We weigh in on Friday and then post the weight here. Sometime during the day, I'll update the chart with the weight. We then weigh in each Friday. It is perfectly fine if you need to weigh in on Thursday, or Saturday, whatever works best for you. Helps if you let me know that your weight on maybe Wednesday is your weight for Friday, so I don't get too confused. :) Though I miss those at times and have to be reminded. It happens.
Most of us set a goal for the challenge period, but if you'd rather just work to lose some weight without having a goal weight hanging over you, that is totally fine!
Here is the link. Let me know if it doesn't work for you. I'll drop any of the names from the last 2-month challenge after a week or so. Gives folks a chance to get back into it if they want.

I used to weigh Bailey cat by getting on the scale myself, then picking him up and getting on. He loved to be held, but it's like he knew what I was holding him for and he too did not really want to know how badly he'd let himself go. He'd fight to get out of my arms. And, since it was my early morning weigh in for myself, there was usually a lot of skin there for him to scratch, if you know what I mean. :)
Oh I miss you crazy Bailey cat!
And you are very welcome everyone! Glad to be of some help in the battle!

And I do the same thing to weigh our cat or our dogs. With the dogs, it's particularly difficult since they are both just about 70 lbs. You should have seen me trying to hold them still while we added them to the WII fit. It's like a strength workout and weigh-in in one! ;)

I'm just shy of losing 10% of my body weight (225).
I was in a minor car accident last week. I'm dealing with a little bit of whiplash and is keeping me off the bike and out of the pool and it's driving me nuts, but my doctor said I need to rest the soft tissue or I could turn a minor injury into a major injury. Alas.

No change for me this week. :( I went up after my period and then right back down. Hoping to see a change next week from all the hard work I put in this week though. Determined to stay on track all weekend.
I find that the hardest part. I plan ahead and I try to stay focused, but the weekends aren't as structured for me and I can't alays anticipate where I'll be. Maybe all the practice with the new pedals and shoes will keep me motivated . . . wish me luck!
It's so cool to be a part of this group and know that everyone is working so hard and making progress. It's inspiring. :)

Alas, our people scale only does pounds, not halves or quarters. Since he's only got to lose 2.5 pounds, I figured it would take a while to show up on the people scale. It's just too coarse of a measurement for him. And I'm a bit obsessive so I want to see some results. Poor baby has been totally licking his bowl clean at night after we go to bed. I was hoping he would have already lost an ounce or two.
Plus , it's pretty funny to try to get all of this big boy onto that scale and have him stay still long enough to get some sort of accuracy.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm having a hard time getting my cycling in... I started last summer with my daughter's bike and I thought this is fun. Bought a bike on Craig's list that came with clipless shoes. I promptly had my first accident falling over and not getting unclipped. Sprained my forearm so had to take a few weeks off from cycling; by then winter had set in. Bought an indoor trainer, used it a few times; then I got rear ended. My jeep's in the shop getting repaired and I'm in a rental and I get rear ended again! This time I end up in the hospital with the fractured back. So I don't know when I'll be allowed to ride. I drive a rural delivery route for the post office. I have to sit around a lot while my back heals. I've enjoyed reading this site. Thanks everyone!

I've also revamped my kitchen by getting rid of all the processed junk and eating mostly whole, natural foods. DH and I have also decided to go vegetarian a few days a week (good for us and good for the planet :D) with the hopes of eventually being full time vegetarians. 114.2 this morning :-)
It really helps to know you are all out there. Reporting every week adds an extra level of reinforcement.
I have gone more and more toward eating smaller snacks and meals through the day. Also, starting cycling in the summer made me think much more about the kinds of snacks I was eating. Even on non-ride days I'm hungrier, so I have added in a morning snack of fruit, a handful of almonds or something else to keep me going. I can eat more- but not a lot more- and still lose weight, writing everything down is key for me.
I hope everyone has a successful week.

It doesn't seem like a milestone, but it's the weight that the BMI calculator has as the highest weight in the healthy weight range for my height. So I am officially (though it seems silly and one pound is an arbitrary difference) in the healthy weight range and no longer "overweight." But I have a ways to go before I am in MY normal weight range.

229...argh.
In my defense, I've been off all training for two weeks due to a minor car accident which resulted in whiplash and soreness/stiffness. My GP and my chiropractor concurred with me resting my neck for a bit or I could turn a minor injury into a major injury, so I've been out of the pool and off the bike for two weeks.
Until yesterday. I swam 11 laps, but it took me 25 minutes (550 yds), and my neck was tight afterward. So it looks like a few more days off for me.

Tucker Cat lost another 3 ounces. He's at 15.25 pounds now. I think it's going to be a long process for him to get down to 13 pounds.
Fortunately, Cassie Cat's weight has stayed the same, so even though we're putting out less food, she seems to be getting her fair share.

232.2...wrong way, wrong way, wrong way.
I have only myself to blame. Poor diet choices this week, and I've been off any real exercise for three weeks since I was rear-ended at a stop light. Relatively minor as car accidents go, but it was hard enough to keep me off my bike and out of the pool for a while.
Paying for it here.

I am openly not posting. I have struggled a little in the past month with being obsessive about the scale. My nutritionist told me that if I am feeling bloated (because of a period) or salt intake not to step on the scale. I am tapering for a race on sunday, and I can feel that I weigh more from increased salt and lack of running. But, I am trying to convince myself that I am supposed to, because my legs are going to use that on Sunday :p Sorry, I just had to vocalize it so that I don't feel guilty and go step on the scale. Maybe monday. Trying to keep a healthy mental attitude (and it can be really hard sometimes!!!)
Good work everyone!!!

+1
Possegal, I'm going to ask you to take me off the spreadsheet. I've been at my WW maintenance weight for almost a year now (Yay!) but have been obsessing over getting off a few more pounds. Which means I obsess on everything I put in my mouth, and I don't think that's healthy for me at this point in my journey.
So, I've decided to put the scale away for a while, and just concentrate on my training (which is going great) and how my clothes fit (which is also great) and leave it at that.
My hope is that I've learned enough in the past 18 months that I can simply eat sensibly and make good choices.
I want to thank everyone for all the incredible encouragement you gave me when I was still actively losing. And I want you all to know what strong, beautiful, courageous women you all are.

Rock on, Susan and Kacie!
I'm so far away from it, I don't even know what my ultimate goal weight is. I just know my current goal, 220, by the end of April.
I have yet to get back on my bike outdoors on real roads since DH bought me clipless pedals. I've been on the trainer a few times. I think I'm afraid of falling yet again. I'm still recovering from the car accident (fairly minor; three weeks ago; rear-ended at a red light; resulted in whiplash, a sprained tendon in my left wrist, and a emotional fragility that has left me weepy and uneven), too.
How do you deal with a fear of clipless pedals? Just get over it and get on the darn bike already?

For kacie and Susan O., a suggestion: Since we live in a home with a small bathroom, we really don't have floor space to keep a weigh scale permanently there. So we put our scale in storeroom on shelf. It makes the scale abit less visible and abit less accessible. I can get it out within 3 min.
It works for me since I forget to weigh myself for chunks of time. I weigh myself approx. 2-4 times per month or less even.
I'm filled with wonder for people who do weigh themselves daily for several years. I psychologically could not handle that.

Just my opinion, but I think given the fragility that you are feeling, and the need for you to have your riding back as soon as you are able, I would give some thought to going back to riding without the clipless until you feel strong and happy again, then try them again. I would worry that right now, you don't need to add on the fear of falling with the pedals. Other than that- yeah, I just had to get back on and hope to not fall again. Making fun of myself and showing off the scars seemed to help me a lot too. :)

150 lbs.
<rant>
I met up with sport nutritionist the first time this week. Interesting insights - I am trying to follow her eating schedule now.
Thanks to all the education Triskie has done on here, I also had an OGTT test done and waiting for the results together with my thyriod TSH and free T3 and free T4 done. My Anti-TP are through the roof.
In midst of this, I am running/biking my FIRST duathlon on Sunday. The first .3 of mile of run/bike/run is up the hill (4% incline). It is going to be tough but I am looking forward to it.
I guess, what I am trying to say in this long rant is: I am participating in the 'Weight loss challenges' for more than a year and half. I lost 20 lbs, I became aware of what I eat and how it affects me. I learned that my 'hating' relationship with sugar and carbs is not just me trying to be weird but probably is a consequence of my real issues (again, thanks TRISKIE). You guys taught me so much about my Hashimoto disease, about nutrition and metabolic processes that I (for the first time in my life) feel in control of my body.
I am 38 years old and feel in the best shape in my life. 2 years ago I was 20 lbs more. 1 year ago I had an ovarian cancer surgery. In 2 days, I am running/biking my first duathlon. Even though I am going to finish below the 50% percentile, in my mind, I am already a winner.
THANK YOU ALL!

My legs ARE looking much better though, and they are getting bigger because of those things under the skin of my calves, whatchamacallit - muscles. Yeah, that's it - I've never had them so visible in my life - which is why I can't remember what they are called :p - so perhaps it really is due to all of the work :D

I'm back after an off week of being out of town and then out of town again for Easter. I worked really hard to stay on track while traveling, but the family and Easter weekend coming right on the tail of it knocked me so far out of my routine. Also, stupid campus gym (and my great spin class) shut down for spring break.
On the plus side, I did get in an amazing 50 mile ride last weekend along a gorgeous stretch of coast. I think I'll be dreaming about that ride for awhile. I like knowing that even though I may fluctuate in weight, my strength and riding ability are continually improving. :)
Anyway, I didn't weigh last week, but today am 164.4. Up two pounds from two weeks ago. Boo.

It's tough, isn't it? I used to joke with my vet about how very painful kitty dieting was for me. :) My niece was living with me when Bailey was on his diet, I would feed him in the morning and she said he'd come to her when the bowl was clean and meow like he hadn't been fed yet, like maybe she didn't know better and she'd feed him too! We used to crack up!

171.4 I am going in the wrong direction and getting very frustrated. I thought about dropping out of this weight loss challenge but I really don't think posting my weight on TE has anything to do with me not losing weight. I have just been making bad choices day after day and finding any excuse to eat garbage, but I am feeling like making better choices. Yesterday was a good day and hopefully today will be too.

Jones -
Don't beat yourself up about it. For the first many, many challenges here on TE, I did not lose any weight at all. That's right. The first challenge I recall was in May of 2008 (two years ago now!) and I started at 168. That's the same weight I started at this time around, too. I even topped out at 174 somewhere in the past two years as well (right about when I opted to step away from these challenges for a few months!).
It's one thing to want to lose weight and entirely another to make it happen. Sometimes, as individuals, we just aren't there yet. I had a coach that used to call them 'false starts'. I had about a thousand false starts between 2008 and about a month ago when something just clicked. Until you get that 'click'...or that definining moment or photo or incident...it's almost impossible to force it. I just couldn't make myself take the weight loss thing seriously enough, for long enough, to get results. I would have one or two 'good days' followed by 2 or 3 bad ones. No results. Even the thought of wearing a bikini on a beach with 6 other thin, fit women (most of whom I didn't know), didn't spur me on. Training for my first tri didn't spur me on. Running out of clothes that fit me (I was too fat for my fat pants!), didn't do it either. Then one day, about 4 weeks ago, something clicked. My husband and I made the decision together and we actively set out to change our lives. We reworked our kitchen and pantry, we rearranged our schedules, we made the commitment. Now I'm down 12 lbs down from my highest and while I've still got a LONG way to go, I can speak honestly about what it takes to make the change. It takes a spark. Find your spark and you will do it. AND, in the meantime, don't beat yourself up about it! The fact that you are aware of your own desire to change is still leaps and bounds ahead of most of the population!
Phew - that got wordy. Didn't mean for that to happen!

Good post, GLC1968! I agree 100% on the "click" part, and also had a similar epiphany, if you want to call it that, about 2 weeks ago. As one of my former co-workers used to say, "your head has to be in the right place". She lost 60 pounds 9 years ago, and has kept it off since.
I think that the motivation comes from within, and not from looking at pictures or trying to lose for a class reunion or whatever. There are lots of tools out there to help you lose weight, but you have to start the process yourself. It took me many, many false starts to realize that.

GLC,
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I guess my frustration is that it did click and I lost weight, 40 lbs, and the motivation just left. When I think about being on a diet for another year I eat. When I focus on being healthy or faster or feeling better I make better choices. I just want my click back and I want it to stick with me during the challenging times.
I did notice your weight loss, nice job!

Jones - I did that once, too! I lost 30 or so lbs - still had 10 - 15 to go and I just couldn't make it happen. I think I was just over it, you know?
In fact, that was when I bought my first road bike and since then, I've done nothing but gain!
I honestly believe in the value of taking a break though. That same coach I mentioned above used to refer to fat loss as paddling a kayak upstream. In order to make any headway, you have to paddle very hard. If you only paddle lightly, at best you can hope to stay in one place. If you lift your paddle out of the water altogether (ie, give up), then you'll quickly start moving backwards. So my thought is if you just don't have it in you to paddle hard right now (we all get tired, right?!), then just paddle lightly and keep yourself where you are for awhile to rest. Once you are ready, you can start paddling hard again to make more progress.
Whatever you do, don't do what I did and pull those oars out of the water altogether! :o

Jones, don't beat yourself up. It's a LONG journey and it tends to come off faster in the beginning and then slow up. It's hard to make your head adjust to it and it gets really frustrating. You just have to try to keep in mind the progress you've made already and give yourself a well deserved pat on the back. Maybe back off the stricter diet thing for awhile and make a goal to just stay healthy. It can be daunting thinking of how long you need to do this for, and the reality is that it won't end. I made the mistake of thinking that I would get to a certain place in my weight and then I would never have to think about it any more. Wrong! It does get easier to know what to eat and make those healthy choices, but they never go away.
I've lost 113 pounds, but it's taken me since 2005. I lost 30 pounds in the first month, and a hundred in two years. But the 13 pounds have taken me the remainder of that time. It's slow going sometimes, and you go up a little, down a little. Don't think of it as failing, that always makes me want to pig out in despair. Just think of it as a side trip on the main road to where you want to go or a little breather.
I recently went through a really frustrating point where I was working my butt off and not seeing it on the scale at all. I was in tears every time I weighted because I was killing myself and nothing happened. Sometimes our bodies do that. Just keep pushing and something will click and your body will move forward again. For me, working hard not to get into ruts - both eating and exercise - is key. Change it up, try and make it interesting, and have fun.

Don't think of it as being on a diet. If it's a diet, when you stop, the weight comes back. You have to be honest with yourself and make changes that you can live with.
For me it was easy to give up the 3 - 4 Red Bulls I drank most days. Giving up my daily homemade chocolate chip cookie was much harder.
Have a plan to deal with those challenging times. I know at staff meetings there will be a ton of junk food - teachers love junk food. I bring my version of junk food those days - peanuts, cashews, almonds, dried cranberries and chocolate chips - in a measured amount.
Good luck!

Tucker is at 15.25. Sometimes I think the vet was wrong and he is not suppose to be a 13 pound cat. I've cut their food from 1.5 cans per day for both of them to 1 can per day. Tucker's weight has barely changed in two months. Cassie has stayed the same.
They are eating a high quality canned cat food with human grade chicken. Tucker had been over 17 pounds at just a year old when he was eating dry food. He was tubby! Too many carbs for that baby. :D

I agree that it is overwhelming to think about dieting for another year. I focus on one meal, one snack at a time, one moment at a time. And I don't beat myself up if I have a bad day. Getting healthy is not a race to a finish line. As my uncle always likes to tell me, By the inch, it's a cinch, by the mile, it's a trial.

Change is hard.
It has taken me 43 years to figure out that I should just not eat potato chips. C'mon potato chips, they are so good, crunchy and salty... it doesn't matter how many I eat, they always make me sick later. It doesn't matter what kind they are... I get sick later. But, I love to eat potato chips.
43 years to finally say, "That's it. I am done eating potato chips. No matter how tasty they are, it's just not worth wanting to barf two hours later." I had this epiphany April 2 after potato chips with a sandwich at lunch.
I guess when it comes to food, I'm a slow learner.

Yay, Limewave - you made your goal! Good job!
I'm taking a pass on today. I did weigh myself, and it wasn't pretty...and it SHOULD be, so I'm going to give my body one more day before I share a number for the week. If I was on the biggest loser, I'd be leaving the ranch. Damn. :p
That said, I agree that thinking about it being a whole year before you get to your goals is depressing. At my current rate of loss, summer will come and go before I'm at my 'goal' and that's kind of a bummer. BUT, I'm working VERY hard right now to focus on the small little changes. I like how eating this way makes me feel. I like watching my 'muffin top' vanish. I like feeling a little hungry because it means that my body is accessing my fat stores. I like that I can now use a new hole on my belt and that all my pants feel mysteriously longer. ;) I'm looking forward to all the changes headed my way and I'm going to focus on each and every one (no matter how small) instead of looking towards my end goal. It's about transforming my life - not my body. My body will just be coming along for the ride.

Thank you everyone for your support, it truly helps. The one think I really don't want to do is stop "paddling" I have done that before and the weight comes flying back on. I also need to focus more on the good thinks that the weight loss so far has brought. I used to suffer from constant acid reflux and now it is completely gone except one time I really over ate, but at least I recognized that I over ate. I never noticed over eating before. I do feel much better now and I move much better now, oh and I have hip bones now.
Thank you again for all the encouragement, I will weigh in tomorrow.

112.0 again. This last 2 lbs is stubborn! Plus, I am banned from my bike for a few weeks due to an injury and I don't use up as many calories swimming a few times a week... but maintaining is almost as good as losing at this point.
Just to echo some previous comments- if I think of it as "dieting" or giving up something, I just cannot be successful. If I think about what I am gaining by eating healthy, and how much better I am feeling, I have a lot easier time. It has been a slow process for me, 38 pounds in 16 months, but I'm almost there, and feel so much better now.
For what it's worth- here are some things that have helped me be successful:
I journal everything and pack measured amounts of food to take for lunch and snacks at work- it really helps. I've learned not to let myself use birthdays, holidays, meetings, parties etc as an excuse to indulge, because then there is an endless series of over-eating opportunities. Sometimes it gets a little old, but overall, my cravings for processed foods are down a lot, and I am enjoying the flavors and textures of less processed foods- fruits, vegetables, whole grains etc. much more. I still enjoy chocolate (in small quantities) :D

Sorry I pretty much dropped out. I am still working really really hard on healthy eating. My nutritionist made me hide my scale. I can report that she measured my body fat % at 22% when I started working with her in January, and when I saw her last week, she re-measured me at 19.5%. I do know that my weight is up some, my guess is around 160, but I really cant complain if I am losing fat and training well! (Don't worry, I try to complain about it!) I am going to take that as success. She is monitoring my weight, but since I tend to hyper-focus on it and I am ironman training right now, I am not focused on it. I have to focus on this insane training and fuel according to her guidelines. That's still going well, and my training is fantastic (if you can call this self-imposed tormeting fantastic :D ) Carry on everyone!!!!
