Wow. Just thousands of people walking into our neighbourhood (http://thirdwavecyclingblog.wordpress.com/2010/02/17/rivers-of-people-the-olympics-spill-over-effects-on-walking-cycling-and-public-transit/)for the Olympics. We live near several Olympic public venues. The local transit authorities are pleased with record-breaking passenger numbers. But there are some line-ups...

Somehow I get the feeling, the general "patience" /willingness of people to abandon their cars for Olympic related events/games:

a) on good, non-rainy days, it just makes non-car travel easier
b) Olympics is a once-in-a-lifetime experience/event for at least many locals here, who might (?) then reserve some patience for non-car use...just temporarily.
c) maybe a handful will actually be inspired by the Olypmic athletes..and hence, mind less the thought of walking/active transportation, an extra 20-30 min. or so to get somewhere.

It's just amazing to see...high volumes of people walking to get around somewhere.
And yes, it is easier to bike around if one knows how to get around certain barriers / avoid certain road sections/ chooses non-peak load times. For a cyclist, it's easier to plan latter.

But we're glad we don't live near noisy pubs/restaurants.
