i will retire at the end of this month. I have long been considering going to either Barnett Bicycle Institute or the other one I know of, United. I would like to do this so that I can become more self-sufficient and perhaps take some 2-3 day rides away from home. I am not very intuitive mechanically ...i think I would be the last person someone would call for help to fix just about anything! Thus the necessity of schooling. Any opinions out there as to which one? kay

I think you'd be happy at UBI. I took their 2 week professional course a couple years ago. Newfsmith on this board took their one week women only course. Margot from Luna Cycles, who posts on this board, taught there. Their material and teaching method is sound, lectures and demonstrations followed by hand-on practice of each skill on a variety of bikes and components. You always work with a partner (different person each day) so you'll have help through the skill practices - a real plus if you're a novice at bike work.
