I'm in the market for a new pair of shorts. I'm currently riding in a pair of Primal Wear's Prima shorts, which I like, except that I'm in between sizes, so they're a little big in the hips and legs. I also have a pair of cheapy Performance shorts. I've found a good deal on a few styles of Castelli shorts, but few people mention those. Any suggestions for something less than about $80?

My favorites are the Pearl Izumi Short Attack Shorts. I think they run around $60 - $75 depending on where you get them.

I really like Shebeest triple SSS shorts. Great fit, and perfect chamois.

I second the Shebeest SSS. They were recommended here and I love them. Of course, they are the only bike shorts I've ever had.

Have you worn the PI Sugar short? If so, how do they compare? I am finding that most shorts have the chamois set back too far to fit my sitbones at all. I think I have a weird butt. The SSS short didn't work for me at all.

What about a pair of Ground Effect Jitterbugs..http://www.groundeffect.co.nz/product-detail-JIT-WOM.htm
They're (with the current exchange rate...) $58.
(I have a M pair of Witches Britches that I could send you...only worn a couple of times)

I tried a pair on and did not like them... The Sugar Shorts have the 3D Tour Chamois, and the Short Attack Shorts have the 3D Race Chamois. I can't tell you what the difference is though.

I have both the PI Sugar shorts and the Shebeest SSS - I personally am not comfortable in the Sugar shorts because I find the chamois too thick and too far back so maybe they will work for you - I prefer the SSS.

I have a pair of PI sugar knickers and I think the chamois is a bit thick (hasn't caused problems but it feels bulky off the bike, and immediately when I get on, but then I forget about it after a minute or two) but as far as where it's placed, that's pretty good for me.. my sit bones actually land in the padding (they've been completely 'off' the padding on some shorts I've tried) and it doesn't feel too far back for me.. i actually have more pad up front on these than I'm used to with some of my other shorts, but that may have more to do with the shape/length of the pad itself, not just the placement.
I haven't done any long rides with these yet.. so I might feel different after 25+ miles than I do after my usual 10-15 mile rides.

I found the SSS chamois to be way farther back than that on the Sugar shorts, but the Sugar chamois IS really bulky.

I love the Castelli Zen Due shorts. I didn't like the chamois in the Shebeest SSS, which many people rave about. But you will find many different opinions on shorts. I have tried several brands (PI, Terry, Castelli, Shebeest and a few cheap pairs) and styles before deciding that the Castelli zen due were the most comfortable for me. I wore them for a 75 mile ride with no chafing or discomfort. Unfortunately you have to try them out because what is the absolute best short in the world for someone may be the most uncomfortable for you.

Of all the shorts that are currently in my rotation (PI, Shebeest, Sugoi)...I like my Sugoi RS shorts the best. Coming in as a close second, would be the Pearl Izumi P.R.O. bibshorts.

I think if the Castelli shorts I got (the Visio 1--I found the black ones for about $50...) don't work out, I'm trying the Sugoi Evolution shorts, or perhaps Pearl Izumi, though I haven't found one I like yet (why are they all so short?).

The PI Ultrasensors (http://www.teamestrogen.com/prodPI_0426.html) are not short...on me (I'm 5'6") they hit right around 2 inches above my knee...which for me, is the perfect length. On the otherhand...I do have a pair of PI Short Attack Shorts, and those ARE the shorter length...hitting at about mid-thigh on me. I prefer the longer ones.

I just started using the Gore Bikewear Power shorts. The pad feels funny off the bike but seems to disappear when you are on the saddle. With our terrible weather I haven't used them on a long outdoor ride but they have been great on 25+ mile rides on the rollers.
