I'll be setting up another chart. Anyone interested in joining us for the new year, just post here and let me know. I'll add you in to the chart and post a link to it by the end of the week.

Weigh in on Friday 1 January 2010 (or soon thereafter, in case getting on a scale is not your idea of a good new year tradition) and post it here along with your goal for the end of February. I'll add you on in to the chart!

Here's to a successful 2010 for one and all!

Me. I'm getting closer to being under the 190 mark.
Although, I'll be at WDW for two weeks in January . . . anyone think I can manage weight loss while I'm there?????

My Goal is 187
I think I can, I think I can, I think I can . . .

Ok...I think I am back in.
Not successful the last few times OR by taking these couple months off. But I need to be accountable and NOT stepping on the scale sure has not worked.
So, yes, count me in.
Goal? Well since I don't know how much I weigh right now maybe I should wait til I get a starting weight and then figure out what is possible in 8 weeks. I suspect I'll wager a 5 to 6 pound loss. That is what I SHOULD shoot for.

Woohoo! Back in the game (ok, maybe I should not think of this a game--maybe that is my problem, huh?)

That's definitely the best way to go. Once folks weigh in on Friday (or whichever day works best for you) then also figure out what your goal weight will be for 26 February.

Sure, sure. I give up, I'll join in. Went to the Dr's today because of *&^ lingering cold. 176. I'd like to be 140. This is the year.

I'd settle for dropping 2 jeans sizes :o as it tends to be tough for me to drop pounds but easy to tone up?

Count me in......right now I'm around 175 and I'd like to be at 140 (by the end of 2010) I think realistically I'd like to be at or around 165 by the end of February. I hope I'll have better luck doing this as a group effort with all of you motivated ladies!

Does the weight loss journey ever end?

I wish everyone success in reaching their goals!

I weigh 158 and would like to be at least 150 by the end of February. I weighed 177.6 on October 1 so am happy with my progress so far. I would like to get down to 130-135 in 2010...

katluvr

Serottarider...as to your question " Does the weight loss journey ever end?"

No, I don't think it ever does! At least not for me. I take a few months and think "I'll live w/ it, this must be where my body wants to settle (weight-wise)" but then I just get all out of sorts in how I feel and clothes fit and decided...IT IS TIME. But always a constant work/struggle for me.

Here's to losing weight in 2010!

Cat, we can keep pushing each other. I am right at 158 too and would LOVE to get down to 130-135 in 2010. Think we can do it? I get as far as 140 and then put it all back on:( Think about how fast we can climb when we get down to 130!!! WhoooHoooo!!!

You've already lost 20 pounds since October? That's wonderful!!!! Good work.

Kat, I hear you. I kept thinking the weight would come off on it's own as long as I stayed active and that's not the case. It's hard to be taken seriously as a cyclist/runner/swimmer when you are 20 pounds overweight--besides being so unhealthy.

Catrin
12-31-2009, 12:07 PM
Bike Chick, we can certainly keep pushing each other :) I am just hoping that I don't reach another plateau until I am at least down to 150, that last one was just frustrating.

Back when I did Taekwondo I couldn't understand why I couldn't get below 162 - and martial art workouts are intense.... I went to class/practiced 5 times a week. Now I understand why I couldn't lose weight - I wasn't eating enough calories, often enough, or the right things - the triple whammy.

This time I am paying far more attention to what/how I eat - but of course with early diabetes I've no choice (well, no other choice that I like). Pity it took diabetes to get my attention  Thankfully I am greatly enjoying my personal training sessions and working out - and now I have that lovely bicycle sitting in my apartment's living room encouraging me to keep at it!

I'm in too. I'll weigh in on Friday and I'm starting the year with a cleanse. I'm sure I'm somewhere around 160 and I'd like to be at 140 by July 31st - my 25th class reunion.

If I can get back to 130 by the end of the year I will be a happy woman!

I started 2009 at 150 pounds and lost 30 pounds since January (which I did not think was going to be possible) :D
Starting cycling in July deserves credit for helping me lose the last 17 - it came out to about 100 miles per pound.

I think everyone who is joining this challenge deserves a big round of applause for setting a goal for the new year, and I hope all of you are able to feel more healthy and fit, which is probably the best reward of all.

My starting weight for 2010 is 120.0
My goal for this challenge is 115. (I like what Marni said about small goals)
I hope to reach my final goal of 110 by April, which should be about right for my height- which is 5'1"

I'm in! Starting weight of 158.8 (Which is 21 lbs down from october!!!) Might be ambitious, but for this challenge, I want to try for 150.

My goal for my two week break was to maintain at 160, and even going totally off of weight watchers for a week, I still lost, which probably had something to do with the fact that I ran/biked on our vacation to Austin!

I appreciate the support of this group!

I'm going to pass on the challenge this time. I've decided to stop getting on the scale. It's too frustrating. I've been a total slacker since mid November. I'm going it alone this time and looking for changes in clothing fit instead of numbers on a scale.

Jones, you can do it. Don't let the holiday season get you down. I lost 35 between Nov & May last year. Kept it all off until a little indulging during the holiday put a few pounds back on. I'm sure I could have been really really strict and kept it off, or even lost a little during the holiday. BUT, part of the fun of the holidays for me is lots of baking, socializing and eating out more than I normally do, etc. Plus, I needed mental break from all the calorie counting and food journaling.

But, it's a new year and I'm happily back on plan. I'm sure I can lose the couple pounds I put on in just a few weeks in January, and be back on my way towards my ultimate goal (which is less than 10 pounds from where I am now).

Congrats on the huge accomplishment last year! :-)

I'll keep trying. 236.8 this morning.

I've had a hard couple of months. My 11-year-old daughter had swine flu in late October, my father died of cancer in November, I got sick myself in December with the Head Cold from Hell (still coughing, which is affecting my running), and DH bought be very expensive Sidi shoes with Speedplay pedals...you're all going "Yay!" on that one, I know, but I'm scared of clipping in and out and being able to dismount the bike without breaking my neck. Those shoes are slippery.

I've tried them on the trainer and I can clip in and out fine, but doing that on the road is a whole 'nother thing. And then there's the soft tissue damage in my left foot from the bike wreck a year and a half ago where I didn't get my foot out of the strap in time...still hurts. My doctor recommends PT with ultrasound, TENS, and ART. We also finally settled on a bp medication for me. No more huge 10-lb water weight gain-in-four-days-type fluctuations, I hope.

Goal weight, 225.

i was up to 153 and had lost almost 17 pounds but then Christmas hit!

so now I think i'm in the mid-140's, but i totally want 135 this time!! i'll weigh myself soon and post.

i'm doing dr schwarzbein plus gluten-free, but so having a hard time giving up starbucks.

fortunately i can commute all winter (temp is 70-something today) and i joined a gym, but life (and home-ownership) gets in the way and i havent been since mid-december.

hopefully this accountability will be the push i need. besides looking in the mirror.

and, as someone asked earlier, when do we get to stop worrying about this sort of thing? well, my mom is still on weight watchers and she's in her 70's. but she's in maintenance and looks great, so the answer is, obviously, never. we're stuck with body issues for life.

the chart is set up with Friday weigh in days, but any day folks choose is just fine. Some folks do a specific day for other reasons (access to a scale, WW meetings, etc.) and no need to weigh in twice. So no worries, just post when you have that week's weight.

158.4 A little down. I want to revise my goal to 155. I lost my first 20 pretty quickly, but I want to focus on my training, and have the room to experiment with my nutrition without feeling the pressure to loose too fast. I think that is a good goal, and I would feel better with that. In the meantime, I am trying out eating my activity points on WW, since my training has increased tremendously! Good luck everyone!

233 I think. Give or take. I'm in Florida at my mother's house. We buried my grandfather yesterday. He was 87 and passed really peacefully on Wednesday. I did get home in time to see him, but he'd already slipped into a coma. My grandmother is handling it well, I think, but she's not well, either.

My father died in November - I was here, then, too, and spent the week before he died with him. He and Granddaddy both died in hospice care. I swear, that is an amazing group of people.

The funeral was beautiful. They gave him military honors, with "Taps" and everything, and then two young Navy seamen folded the flag and presented it to my grandmother...I was sitting right behind her. It was so moving.

I'll be heading home in a day or so and I'll be able to get back on my workout routine then. Diet, too, although I really enjoyed the casseroles from the church ladies. I don't get casseroles in San Diego.

I was on vacation last week too, so will just weigh in this upcoming Friday. I think it will end up being a wash. Got a workout in every day I was gone, including 3 runs (one of which was 10 miles) and 2 swims ( (I love having active sisters!) but the inevitable restaurant meals surely offset all that activity. We went bowling too. I wonder if that counts as exercise?? :D

Frustrating - I guess this is just how the body works. Most of my exercise is during the week and my calorie intake is a little lower than the weekends. The weekends I tend to take it a little easier on myself, sometimes I take the two days off, or I do different things that are less intensive - and I eat more.

My weight is always 3-4 pounds lower on Monday (yesterday it was 150) - but then by Friday it is always up a couple of pounds. This is perplexing to me, but considering how quickly the inches are going away I suppose I shouldn't complain :p

Hello, everyone. I used to post on this thread back when I had a devil of a time trying to lose any weight. I joined a program about six months ago and have never in my whole life had such easy success, and that's why I'd like to pass along some info to those of you in the SF Bay area. Jumpstart Medicine has helped me enormously, and I've lost 20 pounds in the easiest possible way ever. This medically established program has grown from two locations to around seven or eight in the bay area. You might want to check the web site. For at least 15 years I had tried to lose but was never successful. This is a sure way, and, no, I do not work for them. Just thought I'd share this. Wishing continued best of luck to all here.

:) That is the late, great, Bailey cat. On his head is a bracelet that says "Expect Miracles". When my sister was diagnosed with cancer, my whole family and bunches of friends started wearing these bracelets for her. Her cancer had a median survival of 23 months and we all felt so overwhelmingly powerless. It was a small thing, but something we felt was a way to show her our solidarity with her. Bailey also wanted to let her know he was in her corner. :)

I lost my Bailey boy, to cancer in fact, in January of 2009. My sister, however, is kicking cancer's a$$ at 33 months since her diagnosis with no uptake on PET scans seen in her tumor for the last 12+ months. Maybe there is something to our bracelets.

That's just shy of five pounds since last week, I think. Changes I've made:

1. Stopped eating out for lunch every day, although I went to Panera yesterday and had a 200 calorie You Pick Two soup and salad combo (plus a 160-calorie sourdough baguette) - I think the high sodium in the soup is why I'm a pound up from yesterday, but I'll take it.

2. I've added a 30-minute cardio session on the bike or in the pool every day, no exceptions, in addition to the Core Performance weights/pliometrics.

3. The sauna at the Y is my new best friend. Yeah, I'm just sweating it out, but it's also making me drink more water, so again, I'll take it.

Does that put me in the pinK? My goal was 115 for this challenge.

YEP! I change the color if you get within less than a pound of your goal. Not that I've ever seen that color change in my own line mind you. :)

I've started doing this, too! 200-calorie snacks/meals, mostly, and it's really keeping my blood sugar even.

I'm down just shy of 20 pounds since September, and I think a good bit more than that since I joined the forum here.

Possegal, do you have the old-old-old sheets showing where we were a year or more ago?

Thanks. This forum has really been hugely inspirational. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your keeping the records, Possegal.

It's funny - I'm losing gradually, so the people I see all the time haven't really noticed, but every now and then I'll run into a friend whom I haven't seen in several months and they're blown away by the change. Of course, it's all relative. I'm still waaaaaaay overweight, but you know what my big realization was recently? I'm no longer 100 pounds overweight.

I don't know what my ideal weight actually is, but I know 125 is too low for me. I'm thinking 140, and if the 2 lbs per week keeps going, I could actually reach that this year. That's amazing to me, and attainable, thanks to this community. Thank you all for that.

I'm going to need a new picture soon. My current avatar is looking less and less like me every week. <g>

But you always sound so cheerful and positive, and when I see your avatar pic, you look so joyful and I feel inspired by what you have accomplished. Make sure your new pic captures that same spirit.

I was 130 last Friday.

Clearly won't be making my 127 goal, but the truth is that I've not been trying very hard these past 2 months.

On the plus side, though, I hit my WW goal of 130 pounds at the beginning of May 2009, and although I've bobbed around 130 +/-3 pounds since then, I'm still at WW goal.

But, if I want to lean up for my summer events, I really need to get focused again.

I heard an interesting story on NPR this morning about weight loss and leptin levels in your brain. In short, when you lose weight, your leptin levels decline. Leptin controls your brain's emotional responses to food, so as you lose leptin, your brain seems to signal that you need more food. It was very interesting. You can read it here:

Much to my great surprise, I weighed this afternoon BEFORE weight lifting and spinning, to find my weight down to 147.8!!!!!!!!!!

Of course there is no telling what it will be like on Friday - I've noted before that usually when I don't work out over the weekend that my weight drops anywhere from 2-5 pounds by Monday. This has never made sense to me...

Roxy, I'm using the weightwatcher's guidelines to determine my "ideal" weight. I think they have a good handle on it- but they do give a range for your height.

For my rather short height (5'1"), the range is 105-128. My original goal was 121, but when I got there, I felt there was still too much fat, especially around my middle, for my small frame. So I've readjusted my goal to 110-112. For the first time in my adult life, I feel like I'm close to a proportional weight for my height, and the cycling has added fitness as well as weight loss.

Sharon

Thanks, Sharon.

I'm 5' 4.5", but I don't know what size my frame is. I've been so heavy for so long...I really don't know. I've been over 200 lbs since, oh, um...1996.

When I was in college, I weighed about 130, but I was so unhealthy. I lived on Diet Coke and Hershey bars and never ever exercised. I dropped an 8am aerobics class because it was just too early in the morning for me.

I just don't know what my ultimate goal is here. Interim goals, okay. I'm down to 227 today. I think if I can keep up the diet and exercise and general self-care, I can get to 200 by the end of the school year. I'd like to be under 200 by June 1. There, I said it.

Another little bonus this week: I wore a shirt I loved a few months ago. It's this deep burgundy red, 3/4 sleeve, v-neck, cotton t-shirt, size 2X...and it was way too big on me this week. Seriously, I looked frumpy.

I'm donating it and a bagful of clothes to the women's shelter. Clothes that are too big for me. That's a first. Ha!

Roxy

I worked with my nutritionist to come up with a goal. She thinks that body fat percentage is as important as the weight, but she thinks I can get down to 140-145 and lower my body fat to be at my best athletically. I started really thinking about it when I hit above 180 in october. I am certainly trying toget down to that weight without getting too frustrated :-)

Roxy - that is SO awesome. Congratulations!! I think the goal you set for June 1st is very reasonable and attainable.

I have *one* recommendation, though, and that is that you keep ONE piece of clothing that fit you when you were at your largest. I've given away almost everything that I've shrunk out of, but I kept my biggest pair of size 16 jeans. Whenever I'm really struggling with staying on track, or I need a "you can do this Susan, you know you can" sort of self-motivational boost, I go up to my bedroom and I put on those size 16 jeans. When I see them puddle in a heap around my ankles, sliding right off my size 6 hips, my determination to stick with it is always renewed. Maybe your formerly-favorite burgundy top could serve that function for you?

azfiddle - I agree - I think the WW ranges are very reasonable, and coverage a broad range of body types and ages. For my height (5'4"), the range they recommend is 117 to 146, which they define as an estimated BMI range of 20-25%. I set my original goal at 130, right smack in the middle. I'm 129.5 right now, and this is a healthy weight for me, but I'm not really "lean" at this weight. I've recently reset my WW goal to 125, which I think will put me at a lean but healthy weight for the upcoming racing season. (I was 126.5 at my lightest last summer). I expect I'll let my weight drift back to 130 again over the winter during the off-season. That will let me indulge a little over the holidays while still being in a healthy range.

It should say something cool and inspirational, something to help keep us on track when we're facing situations like I was today, craving ice cream. It was not as satisfying. I still want vanilla ice cream. But tomorrow is weigh-in.

I think it's a fabulous idea.

And, good call on the bananas!

When I need an ice cream indulgence, I go for this: http://www.hungry-girl.com/externalink.php?frameurl=http://www.icecreamusa.com/products/index.cfm?c=14&b=1 It's only 90 calories for a half cup (2 WW points!) and it's really creamy and yummy. And yes, I really do measure out precisely a half cup. :o

When I was a kid, my older sister used to stick her single-serve yogurt containers in the freezer. The yogurt froze pretty hard and made for good local "ice cream".

My bracelet needs to say "Think before you eat" or "Don't eat that!" as for ice cream I only eat it in the summer time ( I hate to be cold) and when I do I eat this http://dreyers.slowchurned.com/flavor.aspx?b=1430&f=2959 and I eat the whole container, all 160 calories.

Kacie, I am not following a weight loss program. Years ago I did weight watchers and learned lots, now I am just counting calories. I also try to plan meals around what veggies I am going to eat instead of what protein or starch. I try to pig out on veggies and eat smaller portions of other things. Dieting is hard and takes lots of planning- that's the part I don't like. Being smaller and faster is the part I like.

I just used the BMI calculator. As I expected, my BMI is squarely in the normal range, although most people think I am super skinny and under weight (I am also right in the normal range for weight, too). I would love to lose 2-3 pounds to get the BMI at the very lowest end of the normal range, so I have some leeway here. But every time I lose those 2-3 pounds, they come right back, unless I totally give up all bread (even whole wheat), wine, and anything else remotely fun. I know I eat healthier than most people and there is no junk in my house.
I spent a few years being overweight and many more being underweight. It's getting harder and harder to just maintain...
