I thinking of surprising Bubba with tickets. He loves sci-fi and Sigourney Weaver.

If you see it in 3D do you have to wear the funky glasses?
We're going on Christmas night, as is our tradition.

I haven't seen it yet, but from everything I'm hearing, IMAX is way better than the regular 3-D.
Tucker, not sure how long it's been since you've seen a 3D movie, but the way they do it now is with polarization, not red/blue. So yeah, you do have to wear glasses, but most theaters have reusable ones that fit like funky sunglasses (supposedly sanitized after each use, but not a bad idea to bring sanitizing wipes...).

I haven't answered the poll because we were debating this very thing this past weekend ourselves. I'll be curious to see what the consensus is!
Personally, I'm leaning away from 3D because it always gives me a nasty headache. I've only experienced it in short flicks at theme parks and such, but I can't imagine how a full length feature film will affect me. Perhaps this is why?...
3D only works if you have two eyes in focus.... :(
Is this true for the new 3D stuff as well (the non-red/blue)?
Edited to add: YES, I just did the research and apparently it does matter. That explains the headaches. I can see 3D - it's just difficult for me. Since there is NO WAY I'm going to bother correcting my distance vision at this late in the game, I guess I'll be seeing Avatar in regular!

I've seen that it's PG-13, but I'm not sure what that means. Graphic sex scenes? Violence? Language? I'd like to take my 11-year-old daughter because she loves fantasy stuff, but I don't want to take her to something inappropriate.
I also want to go see Sherlock Holmes, but just the commercials for that seem a bit inappropriate to me (the scene of him tied up in bed with a pillow in front of him) -- DD was embarrassed to see that in the previews at New Moon.

The poll needs another option.
Wait for the DVD.
I know, I know it's probably really cool and all that, but I've got a really nice home theater, can watch movies in my jammies, in HD on the large flat screen, and am not captive to commercials while waiting for the main feature. I really get bent out of shape paying good money and being subjected to advertising.

I have absolutely no interest in seeing Avatar, but the Washington Post reviewer that I heard on the radio the other day said that the PG-13 rating was due to a graphic violent fight, not nudity or language.

I.Normally, I'd totally agree with you because, for one thing, I make better popcorn, but:
1) there are some movies which need the big screen. For instance, to this day, I regret not seeing "Dancing with Wolves" on the big screen. Big Sky Country requires a big screen. The spacecraft in the first Star Wars produces such low Hertz and is so big, it absolutely needs to fly "over your head" for maximum effect.
2) Date night: I think Bill and I went to a movie theater maybe twice in 20-some years. In the couple of years since we moved here, we've gone to the movies a couple of times and it's been fun. Just a new change of pace for us.
3) Respite from the heat during a mtb vacation: If you have to be in southern Utah in the summer, go ride at 6 am, take a shower and then go to the movies.
4) And lastly, if you do want to see it in 3D, you have to go to the theater (unless you're Donald Trump, maybe).

We saw it today and the whole movie is one huge special effect and is amazing! The 3-D was really good and the glasses aren't like they used to be. No more red and blue lenses. The story line reminded me of "Dances with Wolves" and it was good, but the 3-D effects were better.

My dilemma is that I really don't want to go see it at all (I'll get it from Red Box sometime). I'm sure it's wonderful, but it's not my favorite kind of movie. But I'm always out voted on the annual Christmas night trip to the movies (since the youngest son has been old enough to see decent movies). No one would want to go see Nine or the one with Meryl Streep and Steve Martin. I have to give in every year, and usually I'm ok with it, but it's really going to grate on me if I have to wear community glasses.

Can I change my vote? I saw it last night. DEFINITELY see it in IMAX. It was a long drive for us, and it was TOTALLY worth it. The only thing I can compare it to is when Star Wars came out, people who had the time and money would drive that far to go see it in digital surround sound. Same idea... on a whole 'nother level. This is really the first 21st century movie.
Re: the rating - mostly the anti-war/anti-imperialist theme, I think. There's intense violence but very little blood; evidence of injury is mostly shown after the wounds have healed. The aliens are scantily clad humanoids, but you never see anything resembling genitalia (human or alien), and only the occasional hint of a nipple. There's one love scene that never shows anything beyond embracing. I think a mature 11-year-old could deal with the themes, but to me it's definitely a movie where "PG" is really the appropriate rating - use your judgment of your daughter's maturity.

The glasses are sent away and sanitized and repackaged. They come sealed in individual plastic bags. Completely safe and sanitized. No cootie worries.
If you have ever had a medical procedure including a pap smear, or been to a dentist, their stuff is clean and gets crammed in much more disgusting places than a pair of sanitized glasses will ever go.
For what it is worth, I do not like Science Fiction - it is never a book choice of mine - and yet I loved the movie.

Depends on the theater. Where we saw it, the glasses are wiped off by a theater employee after each show. (And definitely not autoclaved anywhere, unlike the medical equipment you reference. ;))
Just bring some alcohol gel and a tissue (or swipe a hank of TP and use the alcohol gel we're all carrying with us these days anyway :p).

Glasses in mine came individually wrapped and there was a bin to put them in for recycling.
My sister saw it last night in Imax 3D and she LOVED IT!!!
Oh wow. I just saw Avatar and I LOVED it! Kind of funny, actually, because though I'm a sci-fi/fantasy gal through and through I don't usually get all het up about special effects because I never think they can really stand up to what my imagination can produce. So I usually want my movies to have substance and a plot more than just visual beauty. But this has a pretty thin plot, but is a visual joy to watch. The flight scenes literally had me in tears.
Oh, and my 12 yr. old saw it. It's a long movie and pretty intense, and a lot of destruction and sadness. I didn't find the graphic fighting disturbing though.

I get really depressed by any kind of violence. I did not like Sherlock homes at all. My teenagers have to screen movies for me. I'm 48 and an 18 year old has to tell me if a movie is suitable for me.

I think the 3D glasses will fit over regular glass - they're sort of the 1950's big black frame glasses. If you saw "Up" or anything from the 1950's or 1960's with a scientist in it - those are the type of glasses. I just saved mine from "Up" and tucked them in my purse. Figured I'd need them again.
Just back from the movie. I had the three options - IMAX, 3D, or regular. I didn't realize that IMAX was 3D. If I see it again in the theater, I'll see it there. I chose the 3D option, and skipped my normal popcorn and soda. Thoroughly enjoyed it. My brain got fooled on the 3D with the bugs and the ash - both I swear were closer than on the screen. Really cool graphics!

My first preference would be for digital, non-3D.
My second would be for RealD 3D. I can't do red/blue 3D because I don't have stereo vision (so I get some of the combined image and a lot of ghosting - a big headache), but the RealD wasn't bad - there were several cool effects, sort of like snow falling, and some good depth of field stuff like being in the trees and seeing what was in front and what was behind. My husband saw more features than I did, so YMMV. For about the next 24 hours, my eyes and brain were definitely fighting with each other, reading was fairly difficult.
My third would be for old-school film.
For most movies, I would skip the 3D, but Avatar is one of those movies that looks good digital. It's too bad the RealD 3D took away from some of the crispness of digital, which is what I was really hoping for, but it was better than film.

What kind of glasses does the IMAX 3D use? The realD ones looked identical on both of the lenses and the screen looked fuzzy, so there's some kind of magic but it seems to be in making it fuzzy to clear not combining colors or anything. The RealD screen is angled and wider, but not tall like IMAX. Maybe the tall screen is the only difference? (I'm not going to pay $11 to find out ;))
I forgot to mention that supposedly it works best farther back, and the glasses DO fit over your regular glasses (my husband wears glasses).

I have the same problem. The violence in Holmes had the same effect on me, too. It seemed like an entire MMA fight through the whole movie. I liked the plot, but not the gross things always portrayed about Victorian England (dead rats). I did like the way Holmes was portrayed as some kind of eccentric super-genius, except with social skills. I wouldn't see it again, even on DVD, because of the fight scenes. I quite often had to hide my eyes.

Both IMAX and regular 3d are done with light polarization, but they were giving out different glasses where we saw it. I don't know what the difference was - possibly the IMAX glasses are bigger? Anyway either kind fits over regular glasses. We sat way up front (only seats left) and it was great.

If you're right-handed, sit on the right side of the theater, according to this article (http://bps-research-digest.blogspot.com/2009/12/right-handers-sit-to-right-of-movie.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+BpsResearchDigest+%28BPS+Research+Digest%29&utm_content=Google+International).
Interestingly, they say the opposite is not true for left-handers. It doesn't say whether the effect really has to do with right eye, not hand, dominance.
The article says a fair amount of unconscious self-selection happens. I prefer to sit slightly left of center, and I'm right-handed but left-eyed. My optometrist says cross-dominance is much more common in athletes than in the general population.

Good Lord! So people outside of Norway do actually notice Norwegian films from time to time! Cool, I always thought it was just the journalists wanting it to be so... :D
Max Manus is good as a realistic portrayal of a war "hero", also the negative sides. It's also very good on 40's atmosphere. It's pretty tightly connected to Norways experience of the war, som it might be a bit too insiderish for others. Even though I don't like Aksel Hennie much (he's in every other NOrwegian movie and I'm a bit sick of those souldful eyes...) this is one of his better roles.

It wouldn't be my first choice, as I mentioned. I could go my whole life without seeing it. Buuuut, I live in a house full of men and almost-men who love such things, and I would be left out of a lot of conversations and cultural references. So, if they wanted to get it on DVD I'd probably sit and watch it with them again.
However, this movie does not hold their interest and imagination like, say, Star Wars does, or provide just the right stolen line at the right time like, say, Fight Club did. (I haven't seen Fight Club, either, because of the fighting.)

Just seen it in snowy London (in 3d). I thought it was amazing. I am a sci-fi fan - but not really a fantasy fan. I would say this movie is a combo of sci-fi & fantasy. The story is somewhat predictable, but that didn't detract from the movie. I thought the most amazing thing was the forest. I saw it in 3d & I would say definitely see it at the big screen - the 3D was great. Still haven't seen Avatar but we did see Sherlock Holmes yesterday because it's raining and raining and raining here (while I do live in Oregon I live on the DRY side so it should be snow . . . dammit). I would think that most people with no interest in seeing the movie at all probably wouldn't even open the thread - so you probably are a definite minority in terms of who is responding.
We saw it over the weekend and since I fear 3D headaches (and it was sold out anyway), we opted for the regular. It was a good movie. Yes, the plot was predictable - but so was Star Wars (you know, cute guys save the princess from the evil empire - I mean, come on!). ;)
It was a beautiful movie - even in 2D. In fact, we both now want put forth the effort to go see it in IMAX 3D (and I'll sit on an aisle in case I have to leave).

Not really. I wasn't asking for me. I was asking for my hubby who has had mixed results with 3D and I was going to buy tickets ahead of time. Because the poll focused on 3D, I decided that I needed to consult with him about 3D vs regular before purchasing the tickets.
Therefore, why ask for a response from people who don't want to see the movie?
Doesn't really matter, but you shouldn't feel alone in not wanting to see the movie just because that subset hasn't responded to this poll.

Not a stupid question.
You do need binocular vision. It works by giving different images to each eye, that the brain processes into depth.
The glasses can be worn over corrective glasses, lots of people do, including my DH. This is the third IMAX movie we've seen together, plus three or four in regular 3D, and he's had no complaints about the glasses fitting over his regular glasses.

With the glasses over their eye glasses a person should be able to see 3D, but one has to have binocular vision for that technology to work. Even in daily life one needs binocular vision to have accurate depth-perception.

We did the IMAX-3D version last night. Yes, yes, yes. Definitely worthwhile. Most definitely.
I was pleasantly surprised that I wasn't subjected to ads for 15 minutes before the show began too. That is one of my big beefs with the theatre experience.
2 of the 3 of us wear glasses, the 3D glasses worked just fine over my bifocals and DH's regulars.
SK, my original position was "wait for the dvd" but I take that back now.:D
Also, re IMAX. We have 2 IMAX now. A regular old school IMAX five stories tall, and the new IMAX screen in the multiplex, which is where this movie is playing. It is a regular multiplex size theater, but the film takes up the whole screen from top to bottom and side to side, which is bigger overall from the widescreen experience. I wasn't clear that we now had 2 IMAX until I saw this movie.

For what it is worth, I do not like Science Fiction - it is never a book choice of mine - and yet I loved the movie.
ours weren't like that. They were on big trays and we were told they'd been run through the dishwasher.

It was Pocahontas with better special effects and without all the singing.
Okay....always a day late and a dollar short. Story of my life.
But DH and I just had what could pass as a date night.....dinner and a movie.
We intended to see Avatar in IMAX, but every showing today, except the one at 10:30 this evening, was sold out. So "regular" 3D it was.
I've never seen Pocahontas, but while watching this, all I could think was "OMG...It's "Dances With Wolves" set in the future...not the past."
Think: Wounded soldier, sent to a remote outpost. Sent in among the natives. Learns their ways. Falls in love. Pitched battle against what he used to value.

7 I am a day late and a dollar short on this too
I saw 3-D in regular theater would LOVE to see it IMAX.
Our glasses were packaged and we didn't turn them in unless we wanted too (good halloween costume glasses)
They worked fine over my prescription glasses
Re the movie itself - I loved the special effects of the world of Pandora.
Story line I found trite and predictable but I didn't care.
Character development - redundant and stereo-typical but I didn't care about that either
Fighting machines reminded me of Waterworld and Transformers but I didn't care about that either
Overall I LOVED the movie in spite of it's weakness's because the scenes were very well shot, the creatures and plants very interesting and the movie was timed very well. It was a great way to get lost into fantasy for 2 hours and 40 minutes.
Would I go again? YES but I want to see it at an IMAX!
DVD just wouldn't cut it.

:p DH and I discovered this too. We went to the IMAX at the park and were redirected to the multiplex. Made it just in time to the multiplex. No one in town seems to know about this 2nd IMAX. It's been "news" to everyone I've told!
We both were blow away by this movie. The 3D is just amazing. I've been a second time and was totally suck into the story once again. Yes, I'm a total sicence fantasy nerd! :o bikerHen

With the glasses over their eye glasses a person should be able to see 3D, but one has to have binocular vision for that technology to work. Even in daily life one needs binocular vision to have accurate depth-perception.
I am blind in one eye. I guess that means I don't have accurate depth perception, but I don't really notice because I've been this way for so long. I do sometimes miss the glass when I pour my orange juice, and I'm a horrible basketball player. But the only time that it gets in the way of life is driving at night when it's raining. But then, I hear about all sorts of people who don't like to drive at night when it's raining, and they all have binocular vision.
3D movies don't do much for me. Neither do those posters that you are supposed to look at and see something (but I never do).
But I get by pretty well just the same :). I probably won't go see Avatar in 3D or 2D. It just isn't my thing. I prefer westerns and mysteries and anything that was filmed in Paris.
