rubber on trainer wheel

I'm so sorry if this is an obvious or dumb question.

I've just bought my new trainer. I changed over my nobby tires for a cheap smooth one.

First time on the trainer, I have hunks of rubber on the tension wheel. Not streaks - bits. Husband is worries about a fire hazard.

Is this typical with a new tire, or have I set up something wrong? Too much tension? Bad tire?

I use a training tire from Continental tire. I am on my third winter using the same tire so the $70 I paid for it has served me well! When I use my regular tire I do get residue around where the trainer is set up i. e black rubber residue, but not pieces on a closet door that the back wheel is closest to. I understand that you are supposed to wipe off tire with alcohol (rubbing!) prior to using it to decrease the compound that comes to the surface while riding. I'm not sure where I read that- I guess I should find a reference somewhere.

I would think that not enought resistance would cause more tire wear rather than less - anyone have any thoughts here?

when i first got a trainer, it spewed tire pieces out the back. way too hard on tires to be practical, so definitely get a trainer tire - they're either solid orange or solid yellow and are made for just that purpose. and i seem to remember they're way hard to mount! i think i had the shop do it.

yeah..I know..jab...jab:D That's when I was a newb - there are some things I go to my LBS for and some I don't. Tires are an online purchase for me. But if I am ever in Arizona I will gladly purchase them from your store..in bulk!

I have a similar problem, changed out my road tire for a cheap conti and now have a good deal of rubber build up on the trainer. Does anyone know to get it off? should I even bother? and would nail polish remover work like it does on rims from brake build up?
any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thank you for your help. I think it's just the extra bits from the manufacturing process. I'll start looking for a conti.

Any trainer company that I have seen, recommends using alcohol to clean the rubber off. It's also a good idea to simply clean it off from time to time.

I always save my road tires that are worn out, and use them on the trainer. I know that there are specific trainer tires out there, but I see no reason to not use old tires. I do not have any heat build up, rubber on the trainer and it's a great way to get rid of them. Having been on a trainer now for over 25 years, I don't see any reason to spend money on tires unless they are new!:p

I use old tires on the trainer, but just shelled out for one of those Continental trainer tires for DH. That Cheese Whiz colored tire is one of my new favorite bike things! DH is bigger and stronger than me, and manages to "squeak" every tire he's ever put on the trainer, even when he's just spinning. Makes it really aggravating to ride the trainer with him! With the Conty, no more squeaks!
