I'm a new mom and grad school student that needs a little help from the community.
I have a school project where I need to survey shoppers about a certain type of product and haven't been able to get out "in the field" to do it.
I thought the cycling community might be able to help me out and answer just a couple of quick questions about water bottles.
Thanks so much.

Comments (if any):
Use nalgene bottles daily and have no reason to switch. They are durable, easy to carry, and hold water which is everything I want them to do. Reasons I don't want to go to Sigg include: metal (cold to the touch in winter and hot if left in the sun in summer, not a problem with the Nalgene) and not as durable (all the ones I see in use have huge dents in them). Again, no reason for me to switch to an insulated bottle (and I don't think either Nalgene or Sigg make them, so I'm not sure what your question is really asking). IMO (after reading the peer reviewed reports of Nalgene's testing), the BPA thing is entirely overblown, so that's not a factor for me.

No preference.
Comments (if any): I do keep a Kleen Kanteen water bottle on my desk at work and refill it from the tap, but it doesn't keep drinks cold so it doesn't really fit your criteria in the first question. I switched to the Kleen Kanteen from a Nalgene bottle I used to have because the Nalgene was difficult to keep clean, and I chose the Kleen Kanteen because I liked the color. I carry my lunch to work each day but just throw things in my bag and refrigerate them if needed once I get here.

Generally no. regarding keeping it cold.
reason: food safety says safe window is 4 hours. My assumption is that my food and drink are in the safe temperature zone for the first hour. and by the time lunchtime arrives, my food has been in the "danger" zone for three hours.
However, if I do know that the temperature is high outside during summer and being in the car, I will use a small ice chest or lunch bags with the blue ice.
I don't use a special container.
which brand would I use?
first and fore most BPA free! Surgical grade plastic. I'm sorry but I can taste the icky plastic taste in just about all platic bottles. Cycling is the only time I'm forced to use a plastic bottle. I prefer to use 18/10 stainless steel bottle.
Ease of cleaning and use is important to me. Wide mouth so I can get the scrubber inside. Bacterial film are highly resistant to cleaning and disinfectant chemicals. Only thing that will remove the bio-film is physical scrubbing.

I rarely need to worry about keeping something hot for a long time, but sometimes need to worry about keeping things cool.

Comments (if any): Use BPA free and stainless water containers, but since only 4 miles from work, and cubicle at work is 20ft from fridge, ice/cold drinks are not an issue. For camping, food goes in the Coleman ice chest.

Comments (if any):
I think my lunch box is insulated, but it doesn't matter, because I usually take yogurt, which is rotten already with blueberries that start out frozen.
This has the dual advantage of keeping any other food cold as the berries thaw, and keeping me out of my lunch at least until noon, because until then the berries are still cold and hurt my teeth.
Best wishes for a safe and sane sentence in graduate school!
