I don't need a recipe, since have found some.
But more interested in knowing if anyone has eaten cooked fresh mackerel fish. I understand it's a slightly heavier tasting fish.

Holy Mackerel!
I believe I have had mackerel served to me, and although I don't remember the preparation, I remember the event as a fun occasion, so it can't have been horrible.
We eat a lot of mackerel. It's wonderful fried, but is very greasy like bacon, with a strong taste. The classic way of serving it here is with boiled potatoes and a cucumber salad with a vinegar dressing, you want something light and low-fat next to it.
I've been served boiled mackerel once too, it was supposed to be cold but hadn't cooled completely, and I didn't like it at all.

What kind of mackerel?
I can think of 3 off the top of my head (all Atlantic fish, however). Each is very different. Well, two are more tuna-like, and can be prepared as such....they are king mackerel and Spanish mackerel. Personally, I'd leave Atlantic mackerel for the whales. Blech. (But I know some who love it.)

I LOVE Mackerel, have had it raw as sushi and cooked more than one way.

Interesting. Don't know of the specific mackerel type in our waters here.
Can't imagine "boiled" mackerel if the fish is abit oily. Sounds like the richness of fish dish, is something I would need to share with someone else.
I'm not even certain I've had it on sushi yet. I know...I often (even as a kid) eat all sorts of things that I don't always know what it is precisely. No matter, it's fun to explore.

it's good boiled too. That's what it's like out of a can. It's called Saba in Japanese

I've only had saba marinated - which leads me to think that maybe it has a very strong flavor? Never had it cooked or completely raw.

Love love love mackerel salted and grilled, Japanese style. It's called Saba Shioyaki when it's done that way. Yum. It was a favorite of mine when I lived in Japan.
Mackerel is very strongly flavored, much as sardines are. (It doesn't taste like sardines. I'm just trying to give you the idea of how intense the flavor is.)

my boyfriend catches mackerel when he goes sea fishing. I can recognize their unique pattern on their backs anywhere. It was also a pretty steady staple at the aquarium for the fishes.
Saba shioyaki's about the only way I can eat it without gagging, it's a very oily and "heavy" tasting fish.

I've had it prepared "tuna salad" style while in Belize. It was good from what I remember, but I also remember it having a very strong flavor.
My son loves fishing for mackerel. They are so beautiful, and they are extremely energetic so it can get quite exciting. And he happens to like the taste as well, so it's a win-win.
Yup, here he is this summer, with one he just wandered off and caught on the second cast :)
