So... I think I'm going to get a decent, relatively inexpensive used hardtail. I don't know what I want in a MTB. I figure getting out there and trying it is going to tell me more than all the reading in the world. Rather than figuring out what would be "the bike" and waiting until I can afford it, I'm going to jump in. I found a nice used Kona Blast in my size. When I do know what I'm looking for, it can be a good trade-in or spare.

When you're searching for the next bike, think about:
1-Do you want to do any enduro events? 6hr or 12hr or 100km events.
2-Do you want to be able to go uphill well? Quite a few bikes are yep, veerrrry snazzy butttt...they're not great for going uphill. My dear has a Scott Genius MC 40 but hates it going uphill even though he can lock out the suspension. He loves my Scott Scale 40 as it climbs like a dream :)
Have a look at mtbr.com for varying reviews.
I hate to be the enabler but do you know that IF makes mtn bikes?
MOst importantly..have fun on the dirt . DIrt time's always more exciting than roadie time :D

There's a really active group around here made up of all ages and skill levels. I'm looking forward to being able to ride, practically out our front door on some of the hills and trails. I've looked at bikes until my head spins. I think getting a decent beginner bike and starting to ride will tell me what I'm really looking for. I like going uphill, so I want something that climbs well. I'm not so sure about technical riding. I'll probably do a lot of "hiking with my bike" as my friend Pattie puts it. At any rate, I just want to get out there. Life's too short not to fully live each day. Cycling makes me feel more alive than I've felt in years.
