I was working on a "pre-season" write up for Bike Shop Girl and I thought I would chime in over here.

What are you ladies planning for 2010? What's your goal races, and just goals?

My goals involve some bike tours, and so my training will be geared toward those trips. At least one of those trips will include a century. The club in my town is starting a weekly ride near my house on Tuesday afternoons, and I really want to do those rides so I will!

I think it would be really cool to ride my bike every single day, even if it's just around the block. That's one of my goals, too, and it's a hard one because things come up, but I'm going to try.

I'd like to repeat the HIM I did this year... and maybe break the 6 hour mark. Other than that I may try to do a few olympics as well earlier in the season. Last year the only race I did was the HIM.

Tulip- I think riding your bike every day is a fabulous goal - and one I certainly aspire to. Cool, rainy weather has been putting me off lately - especially combined with the fact that I get home after dark now.

My goals for 2010 are on holding, pending results from a knee MRI. Once I know what I'm looking at there, I'll be able to set more reasonable goals. I definitely want to ride a century. Other than that, too early to tell.

I'm going to continue riding my bike 100 miles a week. It's a good amount for me. I should add I didn't ride at all for 6 weeks last year, which I'm guessing will be the case again this year, but you get the idea. I don't ride if it's icy, just to meet my goal.

I don't race. My goal next year will be the 70-mile version of the Livestrong Challenge in Philadelphia. It will be my 5th Livestrong ride and my 8th ride in support of the LAF. I'll be happy to finish in the same time as previous years (at approx. 13.5 mph) and with minimal pain.

My other goal is to have fun and enjoy riding my bike.

My goals

* Be able to hang with the 'fast crew' on our Tuesday night club rides, even on the hill that is my nemesis, by the end of the season next year.
* Improve my cardio so that I don't feel like I'm gonna die when I dismount and run for cyclocross races.
* Improve moving mount/dismount for cyclocross. Fewer bruises from my pedals would be nice

Bringing my average riding speed up to 20-22 mph on my own (without a group to help) on most rides...
Doing my first track riding without killing myself
Making it up that really, really steep part on the MTB (I pulled the bike over on myself there last time I did it)
DBF wants me to get my race license and start doing some road races, I am not sure. Maybe.
Livestrong San Jose and Austin, HHH

I have three cycling/fitness goals for next year:

1) do my first TRI (sprint) in May & if I like it - a second one over the summer some time.
2) ride the Crater Lake Century in August
3) ride/move more in general - which will happen by default just trying to do the first two goals!

Every year I don't set particular goals.

I just ride as much as I can without having my time overly dominated by cycling which is approx. 3,500-6,000 kms. annually. (This yr. will be the highest beyond 6,000. Am exceeding personal cumulative annual.)

Be minimally fit that I can do several long hills in 1 day. Maintain my weight. Every summer, do several 100+ kms. day rides.

Does that make sense?
I tend not to become too rigid/enslaved to cycling goals, just so I can adjust to life's unexpected events ahead. Just as long as I am healthy, fit and can cycle for several hrs. This has worked for me in the last 17 yrs. of regular cycling to stay motivated and happy with cycling.

That said, it shouldn't be super hard for me to achieve the minimum..we don't have a car. :D I guess this is not doing anything for optimizing speed. But the upside is I still love cycling.

I want to say whoa, it's way too early. I am still winding down this season.
That said, I want to be in great shape for my tour of Andalucia (10 days, 8 of which are cycling and 2 walking), in May, which means starting core training and longer rides on the trainer in about 2 weeks. It also means when I get out on the road in March, I have to ramp up the miles a little more. I hardly did any long rides this year, maybe 3 50-60 milers and 4 40 milers. I also want to do a century again, even if it's the same easy one I did 3 years ago. No goal in mind with the time, but it would be nice if I could do it in 6.5 hours like last time, but I am not holding myself to it.
Not sure about the running. I've started up again, but it's almost as hard as when I started last January. I probably will drop it in March.
I want to enjoy the winter sports season, too. We have an x country ski/snow shoe trip planned in February in Craftsbury, VT. where there is always snow.
But, my biggest goal is for my body to hold up, my back to not hurt, and my bones to strengthen from, hopefully, the medication that will work.

Crankin - this is the best time of year to look back, reflect and get ready for the next season. It may not mean to start training, but to get yourself relaxed and putting your feet up is part of off-season training too!

Get back into shape from these injuries. Become a stronger racer then I was last year and actually have a sprint. Really pick and choose my races, not just do every race possible and prepare and peak for stage races.
This year is quality over quantity

This is fun!

Okay, well, I am going to try to get a really good team together for tour de cure and be the top fundraising team (we were fifth last year.)

I would like to (but not sure if I can swing the vacation time) do the Ididaride in New York, which looks fun, and hilly.

We'll do the Seacoast Century again, and since I was really happy with how we did this year, will probably just want a repeat of that.

I'm running a marathon in October.

It would be really cool if T and I could bike while we are visiting Bozeman, Montana in July.

And finally, I really want to get over the fear of falling factor on the mountain bike. So I guess that means more time on the bike!

Although not racing this time of year, I'm not ready to give it up yet.
2010:
1) Start racing some hillclimbs, which obviously means becoming more lean.2) I'll always do the occasional bike tour3) Start doing some self contained touring, with a xc trip planned hopefully in the near future.4) And although I'm not fast, perhaps some longer mtn bike races.5) I quess all of the above means that I should pay more attention to my diet HA!6) And above all else, enjoy the bike(s):D

Last night, I decided to take a ride on the first bike I found in the garage that didn't need air in the tires. It happened to be my son's size L mountain bike, but it was all good. I need to give myself permission to just go out and ride with no fuss or muss (except the helmet), and then I can be like Tulip and just try to ride a little every day. The only bike I need shoes for is my road bike, so I have lots of other bikes I can ride on the spur of the moment.

4. Ride 2,000 miles

Thanks for your suggestion markpedal. I will try to make it a point to do that too and good luck to you in Louisville kacie.....That's a pretty awesome goal.

Bikeshop Girl, believe me, rest is indeed on my mind now. I am not a racer, just an older recreational rider who has only been riding about 9 years. But, I've been into physically active stuff pretty much my whole adult life, so I have learned the hard way about how much activity my body can take.
My winter training is going to be more focused this year, because of my tour in May. I need to be at the same level of fitness I might not be at until June or even the beginning of July. I know this means I might need a break when I get back from the trip, or it could be a very long season...

6) Do the "Bay to Breakers (http://www.baytobreakers.com/)" with a group from work
7) Lose 10 lbs (that one never changes-lol)
and most of all-
8) Be an aware, considerate and safe cyclist in 2010!!!!

1. Get over my fear of riding downhill. (So, go for a few rides in my neighborhood at home. It's sort of hill central, and every one has a stop sign at the bottom!)
2. Lose a bit of the "freshman fifteen" that appears to have parked itself on my person.
3. Increase my distance. I'd like to do a metric century...or even an imperial one this year. This goes along with...
4. Start riding more, even if it's just a few miles a day--work, weather and my health permitting.

My 2010 goals (which will also be the year I turn 50) -

1) Complete the 100lb weight loss (35 to go)
2) Do a 2:45 half marathon - goal is Nashville in April under 3:00 and Chicago in August under 2:45 (2009 Nashville my first half was 3:39 and Chicago my current best 3:09 - speedy or a runner I am not)
3) Complete my 1st and 2nd triathlons - the Pewaukee, WI triathlon in July and the Danskin Chicago/Kenosha WI tri in Sept.
4) Make it up the steep scary hill by my house on my bike.

And maybe do my first century ride.

BleeckerSt_Girl

My 2010 goals (bicycle-wise) are:

-To stop recording how many miles I ride and fussing about what my average speed is.
-To focus more on just using my bike for fun rides, exercise, and errands.
-To have my biking be a natural part of my life instead of something separate and special that needs ritualized preparations, even for a small ride.

My goal is to turn my biking more back to what it was when I was a kid. :)

Enter, complete, and have fun at my first cyclocross race. There's an odd spring one on April 2nd that I think I'll try.

Do an early season century - either May or first week of June.

Either repeat the Copper Triangle, or up the ante and try the Triple Bypass (both tough Colorado mountain day events)

Do my food shopping by bike, with trailer as needed, at least once/month.

This is fun....gotta keep thinking about it!

I'm working on goals for December/winter, never mind all of next year! ;)

I have never ridden through the winter, and this year, I would like to. Biking this summer/fall has been very therapeutic, and I don't want to let go of it.

I won't call them goals, but do have a few things I'd like to do in 2010, if I can swing them:

1.) Ride the Northern Central Railroad Trail from mile 0 to the end, spend the night in York, and ride back. I think this would be nice to do on a mild winter weekend. Or in the spring. Or the summer. Or the fall. :) It's only 41 miles one way, so totally doable physically; just need the time, money, and opportunity!

2.) Ride the Great Allegheny Passage. Maybe (just maybe) combine this with another C&O ride, but since I have a kid in (a very expensive) college, the GAP would be enough if that's all I could afford.

3.) Get better at hills. The only direction I can go on this is up! :D

4.) At least a metric century. Came close this year, with a 57-mile ride.

5.) Improve my average speed.

6.) Pass somebody, ANYbody, when I ride! Anyone, anyone at all!! (Anyone over 8 and under 80, anyway.)

Add weight training/ bootcamp this winter.
Lose 10 lbs. Hahah.
Swim faster.
Get up to 6k run. Run faster.
Learn to surf. (Off topic)

Race in at least 2 sprint tris next season and possibly an olympic by the end of season.

I did my first tri in September and loved the experience. Hated the run but I finished. Triathlon bug bit me pretty hard. Is there a nasal inoculation for that?

Well, since I'm still barely out of the newbie category, it's easy to set goals and get there.

1. I think I might reach 2000 miles this year (I started riding seriously in late July), so it might be reasonable to set a goal of at least 3000 for next year.

2. I want to reach a stable weight and maintain it- I'm within 3 lbs of my original 2009 goal and 10 more pounds would be amazing. But then I have to keep it off.

3. My longest ride in one day so far has been 50 miles, so I would like to increase my range and complete 2 or 3 longer rides- and complete at least one century. I must admit I'm all fired up from watching El Tour de Tucson this morning (although I didn't participate).

Thanks shootingstar!

Goal #1 and the biggest for 2010 is to be the first female finisher of Trans Iowa. (http://www.transiowa.blogspot.com/) My goal is to finish, but it would be nice to kick some guys butts too!

The rest of the year is to stay strong on the MTB, and go into the cyclocross season next year ready to race. I'm doing about 3 races this season just for being so busy at the shop this year I haven't had time to get training in for 'cross.

Owlie

Oh, thought of a few more--
5. Try clipless. Although that involves having money, so if that one doesn't happen, not a big deal. Or, at least put the toe cages back on.
6. Get better with maintenance. Ideally, this would include buying an old bike, taking it apart, cleaning it up, and putting it back together...but that also involves having money. I suppose I'd be happy with not having to rely on DBF (as wonderful as he is) for basic tweaks.

My 2010 goals (which will also be the year I turn 50) -

1) Complete the 100lb weight loss (35 to go)

Wow Kimikaw, congrats on the accomplishment to far.

When I first saw this thread, I couldn't really come up with anything. I've had a great cycling year, and I want another just like it! However, as I thought about it, I've come up with a few ideas.

1. I think it would be cool to ride my bike more miles than I drive my car. This year, with a late start due to some surgery early in the year, I have over 4000 miles on my bike so far and almost 8000 on my car. It's probably unrealistic to close that entire gap, but I'm going to be conscious of it. Maybe I can ride 75% of the miles I drive in my car.

2. Like Owlice, I would like to ride through the winter at some level. Lately I've been doing 600-800 mile months. I think I can keep up the current level through December. It's January-March that will be hard here in PA. So, my goal is to have a reasonable 1000 miles for the year in by April 1. That's only 333 miles a month. It would be great to do more, but I'll set that as a minimum goal. This should put me in at over 5000 miles for the year if I pick up where I left off this year. Maybe more if, for instance, I start riding to the post office instead of driving, in the interest of goal number 1.

3. Related to #2, I'd like to stay fit through the winter, NOT gain my usual 10 winter pounds, and NOT feel like a slug by February. A few years ago, I started celebrating my 1/2 birthday in July instead of my real birthday in January because I always feel awful in January!

4. In 2010, I'd like to cut out the time wasting activities ;), so that I can not only ride my bicycle at the same level as this year, but my horse too. I've had serious horse-selling thoughts this year. Can I do both to an adequate level? This in addition to a full time job, a family and a farm?

The problem is I never met a hobby I didn't like.

I certainly can't match your goals to mine since I don't ride as much as all of you (yet - maybe in 2011). However, I do have a couple of goals.

1) Lose 40 lbs by my birthday at the end of July 2010. I have already lost 8 of those lbs, so 32 to go.

2) Ride 21 miles, with my two children, to my Mom's house which is six cities/towns over on the Rails-to-Trails bike path. Of course I will have to ride back again, but I plan to spend the night first. I know 21 miles to all of you is nothing, but I have never gone that far on a bike.

I've really downgraded my mileage goals to "whatever I end up riding is good."

That being said, I want to be in the top half of the riders on Bike Journal. If not, eh, I did other things.

As more of a SMART goal, I really really want to finally ride the Katy Trail with DH this year. We've been planning it for years, but things like younger daughter's tuition and the embolism have gotten in the way pretty badly.

I didn't ride my age in miles this year, and the probability of that is pretty small, and getting smaller by the day. I may have done it in kilometers, though, on our overnighter to a neighboring small town. I'd like to do that next year, perhaps on the Katy Trail?

No speed goals. I don't race, so the speed function on the computer is mostly ignored. I've made my peace with being a fat old broad on a slow bike. It takes a lot of the pressure off.
