View Full Version : Saturday, August 27th in Monterey?

Would anyone be interested in doing a very easy, very fun and very scenic 50ish mile ride on Saturday, August 27th? This will not qualify as TE's Girls Hill Training Program because there are no hills! I’ve done this ride many times. It is just for fun! There are no lung-burning climbs or 50-mile per hour headwinds. It's really good for your ego because your average speed will be so much faster than on regular rides!

It starts in Marina just outside of Monterey. It goes along the bike path by the coast for about 10-12 miles or so. There is a 2-3 mile section that has pretty heavy foot traffic (along Cannery Row and the Monterey Warf). The bike path ends and there is a short stretch along the coast to get to the entrance of the 17-mile drive to Pebble Beach.

Let me know if it sounds like something you want to do. My schedule is kind of hectic, but if there’s any interest, we can check other dates.

P.S. to SadieKate: This will not help with your climbing goal! Over the 50 miles, you might get to the 50th floor of the ESB!

I SO want to do this - a nice longer ride with no whopper hills sounds so great!

(Trek - this counts as base miles, right?)

I might have access to a place where a couple of us northerners could crash in Santa Cruz - I'll start seeing what the options are there...

Thanks AG - it sounds really nice!

Please do this ride again in October when I'm done with my globe trotting. :D We've done 17 mile drive before, but I thought there were some hills in it. It is VERY beautiful.

P.S. to SadieKate: This will not help with your climbing goal! Over the 50 miles, you might get to the 50th floor of the ESB!Awww, thanks for thinking of me. Purty works also! I'm actually hoping you'll schedule a mtbike day some time. I keep hearing about the trails in your nek-o-the-woods. Might even plan an overnighter for that.

Until our house situation in OR gets figured out I can't quite pin down my schedule yet. I might know more after the weekend but I'm having to hang loose. The original plan was nixed and Plan B has yet to be formulated.

I have pencilled it in Outlook so I don't forget!

That's a 2 hour drive for me, but wait, that's nearly how long it took to get home from work today!

Count me as interested. August, September, October? - I don't know, my "schedule" is a mess right now.

I'm interested, AG! I'll pencil it as well, but I'll need to check with the hubby to make sure that he's willing to hold down the home front.

What time were you thinking? It's about a 1 1/2 hour drive for me...I might want to just find a cheap room for the night if we meet really early.

Fun fun! I looovve Monterey!

VERY interested! The only caveat is that my dh has a college buddy coming into town that weekend and I think that's the day they're going (and taking Jonathan) to Sonoma for some car race at Sear's Point. If so, I may not be able to do it unless I can arrange for someone to watch Elizabeth and Mallory for the day. This sounds really fun and I hope I can make it!! I'll keep you posted!

I hope you all can make it. As for what time, I'll leave it up to you. I live about 15 minutes away, so time doesn't matter to me. We can do it again in October if that works for other people's schedules. I do it all year around. For a while, I did the first half of it as a night ride with a group.

I rode the course by myself this weekend. I recalibrated my computer so it should be pretty accurate. It’s a little less than 50 miles. My computer shows 46.44, but I did a little hill section 2 times. Total climbing was 1,582 feet.

I started around noon, and it did get a little windy, but it wasn't that bad. The winds are hit and miss around here, as is the sunshine.

As it gets closer to the date, let me know who's interested. I'll post info on the meeting place. Does anybody have suggestions for a starting time?

Ok, the home & kids are covered, Hubby's agreeable.... Time? Ummm...say 10:00/10:30? That should allow me to drive over in the morning without having to shack up somewhere overnight.

Where in Marina could we meet? I think that's the area I usually pass through on the way to Monterey from Los Banos/Atwater over Pachecho Pass. I recognize the name.

10 am sounds good to me - avoiding heat/wind if possible is always good in my book!

AG: I have a question - you said the ride is basically flat, but the total climbing was 1,582 feet. Is it mostly a bunch of small up and downs? I'm just curious -- I got my new mountain cassette on my bike the other day, so I don't mind some climbing since I can see how these new gears work...

SadieKate

BikerZ - you climbed more than that on Diablo, in one non-stop unrelenting climb. Almost 2,000 ft up and up and up.

Thanks SadieK - AG just PM'ed me with pretty much the same info! I geuss I need to work on my "rep" as Miss Hill-Climbing Anxiety 2005!

I guess I wasn't thinking about the feet of climb over the feet of distance - AG put that in perspective for me! I'm learning, I'm learning! :o

Now I have to got home and ride up Old Tunnel Rd!

I geuss I need to work on my "rep" as Miss Hill-Climbing Anxiety 2005!Yeah, put this down as one of your goals or AG and I will just keep whacking you over the head simultaneously! I was there last winter and look what I've done. The TE Girls' Hill Training Program is very effective. You just have to believe in your powers.

Well - this weekend I'm riding from San Francisco to Tiburon and back (36 miles?) There should be a couple of good hills in there!

There's been a new development. Blaine's college buddy who was coming out to visit now has to go to Venezuela for work and can't come, which means, I can come ride with you all!

AG, would you mind telling me the route that we're taking, kind of specifically? I don't mean to be a pain, but I'd like to try to figure out a spot where we could meet, have a look at my Krebs map and all that.

Looking forward to seeing you all on the 27th!! :)

I don't mean to be a pain, but I'd like to try to figure out a spot where we could meet, have a look at my Krebs map and all that.Step away from the Krebs!!! :p I PROMISE that this is a flat ride!

Starting point is from the parking lot outside of Jack in the Box.

Address:
211 Reservation Road
Marina, California

For the mapquesters, this is the corner of Reservation Road and Del Monte Boulevard.

We will ride along the bike path about 12 miles to Lover's Point in Monterey. Then about 3.5 miles along Asilomar Beach to 17-mile Drive. Then we stay on the 17-mile drive to the Pebble Beach Lodge. 1-way is about 23 miles.

Good luck getting Trek to play hooky! We tried once before, but she's just 4,359 straight days of unmissed work away from winning the Perfect Attendance prize! (Why she wants that $10 OfficeMax gift certificate and the foot-wide rubberband ball from the mail room enough to skip a ride escapes me! :D )

slinkedog
08-12-2005, 07:35 PM
$10 from Office Max doesn't sound too appealing, but the rubber band ball sounds kinda cool. ;)

Are you coming for sure, BikerZ?

If anyone from my neck of the woods is going down and wants a ride, I can fit one more rider and one more bike in my car.

bikerz
08-12-2005, 09:04 PM
I am definitely going! Travel plans are up in the air - I may stay with some friends in Santa Cruz the night before, and might be bringing a buddy with me to ride - but I'll be there for sure one way or another!

(And yes, the rubber band ball woud be cool - we have one in our office that gets to be about 4 or 5 inches, then someone's kid swipes it and we start again!)

Did you guys end up doing Monitor today?

SadieKate
08-12-2005, 09:59 PM
Thanks, slinke! That's so nice. My whole schedule for the next few weeks is completely up in the air plus Bubba is gone the first week of Sept and I'll be in Phoenix earlier the same week. I'm even going to be at the Siskiyou Century when he gets home from his trip. Everything is going to be last minute decisions until mid-Sept. So, for right now I'm only pencilling stuff into my calendar.

We didn't ride Monitor today because Steph and yellow had upexpected stuff they had to do. Besides, the wheels on my hill climbing bike are going off to Ritchey tomorrow for a retrofit. :( We might do something next Friday. I'm pushing for a mtb ride up by Truckee.

Speaking of the Siskiyou, you and Kim decided what you're going to do. You coming?

Speaking of the Siskiyou, you and Kim decided what you're going to do. You coming? What is "the plan"? If we do go, do we sleep out under a tree somewhere since all the rooms are booked? I would like to go. (So sorry for this slight thread detour, AG. And if I'm feeling energetic, I'll be tagging along on the 27th.)

Turns out to be a no-can-do on the Siskiyou. My 5 year old has his first ever soccer game that day. That's a can't miss!! :)

I was going to ride 30 miles today and it turned into a 12 miler instead. My chain got kinked (again!) in between my granny gear and my bottom bracket. Thank God I was in a spot where I got a cell signal because it was pretty early and there was nary a soul around to help me yank it out. I just wasn't able to do it myself. Blaine came and got me untangled and I just rode home rather than have a repeat performance and be stuck. Blaine is going to spend some time adjusting my front derailleur tomorrow.

THere's always next Saturday, I guess.

Thought we might have family obligations next weekend so I stayed mum until I knew for sure and, ta-da, we're off the hook! So Lee & I will be there.

So will we be starting at 10, or is that still up in the air?

We decided it would be fun to stay over on Saturday night, so I booked us a hotel room about a half-mile from the start - if anyone wants to freshen up after the ride, stop on by - no worries, we're an old married couple, you won't be imposing !! :D

I almost always wear shorts except when I ride the route at night.

The weather will probably change over the course. Marina/Seaside is usually foggy. Monterey/Pacific Grove is often sunny. Pebble Beach could go either way.

I'd suggest some sort of wind breaker of at least a vest.

Some day, AG, I'm going to show up on your doorstep because I sooooo want to ride down there. But this ride was not meant to be. Co-worker #2 has decided that Saturday is THE day for bike shopping!

I am so gosh darn excited for my two co-workers. To continue their saga, they rode the 30-mile route at the Tour of Napa Valley and just breezed through it. I knew they would but #2 just wasn't convinced. However, she was the one who called me from the car to say, "We did it! We had so much fun and it was way easier than riding to Beal's Point!" So, no more hijacking of this thread but #2 now wants a faster light bike so she can keep up with #1. I so love bike shopping with someone else's money. :D

Hey AG - do you recommend using a CamelBack for this ride? (As I learned on our last TE ride, it's a fashion no-no for roadies, but...) I guess another way of asking that is - will it be convenient to refill water bottles on the ride?

It looks like I'll have room in my car for someone else (and their bike), if anyone wants to carpool...

I'm looking forward to seeing all of you guys, and meeting Slinkedog for the first time!

I'll be breaking in a new saddle (or will it be breaking ME in?) - it seems ok on tonight's quick 15 mile ride...

jobob
08-26-2005, 05:07 AM
A lot of roadies use camelbacks, and they make a lot of sense for long rides - it all comes down to personal preference.

Adventure Girl
08-26-2005, 06:27 AM
I always use my camelback. I took the bottle cages off my road bike. I just can't handle taking the bottle, drinking and replacing it in the cage. So when I use my camelback, I drink more.

As far as places to refil on the route, there are many picnic areas along the way, but I don't know if there are water fountains. Near the end there is a nice, clean public restroom, and I THINK there are drinking fountains, but I just can't be sure.

The turn-around spot is the Lodge at Pebble Beach. There are stores there. And at the 15 mile mark is a deli. You could buy bottled water. But Pebble Beach is "high rent district". Everything costs more in Pebble Beach!

Adventure Girl
08-26-2005, 06:29 AM
And what about food? Is the post-ride meal at the Jack-in-the-Box???I'm betting that if we took a vote, Jack-in-the-Box would not win! The start/end point is Marina. There are lots of fast food places and a few real restaurants, but I've never been to any. I think we'll have to just wing it. Maybe we'll see something along the route, and we can go there after the ride.

08-26-2005, 07:54 AM
And after food, the second most important question: bathrooms. Are there bathrooms of any sort at the turnaround and/or picnic areas?

Adventure Girl
08-26-2005, 07:59 AM
And after food, the second most important question: bathrooms. Are there bathrooms of any sort at the turnaround and/or picnic areas?I know of several places with public bathrooms along the route. There are probably more. They are around the 7, 12ish, 16 and 20 mile markers. Some are cleaner than others... (which means some are dirtier than others).

Yeah, the water question came to my mind too as I'm still challenged at getting my bottle out of the cage whilst moving. I have to stop for my drinks and bites. Hope that won't present too much of a problem. I can always try to catch up!!

I don't have a camelbak and have no budget at present to buy one. I need to practice the bottle thing, I guess.

The scenery was amazing and the 17 mile drive was a really nice ride. The tourists made for some interesting moments, but it wasn't bad. Can't wait to do this route again soon!! :)

So, other than Lee's near emasculation courtesy of a stubborn lip of concrete and his bike stem  , it was a mishap-free and very fun day!! (Sorry, Lee, someone had to bring it up!! ;))

That was a really great ride!! Fantastic scenery, great company, perfect weather and a nice "step up" for me on my ride ability. My legs are a little tired today! As always, you TE gals (and your gentlemen!) were truly supportive and helpful.

Tricks I learned yesterday:
1) from aka_kim - how to prop a bike up on a curb using the pedal
2) from Leebob - when standing up a hill, point toes down and let your weight "drop" your leg down rather than pushing - that really helped! (Leebob's my new hill coach! He really stuck with me on those early "little climbs" on that "flat ride"!)

AG - Thanks again for getting us all out there (and safely back again!), and it's great to have faces to put to BikeMomma and SlinkeDog' posts now!

On hwy 156 heading east to 101 the temp went from 66-96 in 20 minutes!

Hey - since I was "flying without instruments" yesterday, anyone care to toss out some ride data? I know it was 46-point-something miles, but I have no idea of how long we were riding... I know any of your average speeds will be higher than mine was, but I'd love to have a ballpark idea... TIA.

Max Speed: 28.4 mph (probably on some downhill somewhere...don't think Mr. Ed and I hit that on the way back...came close tho')
Average Speed: 13.3 mph (the low speed undoubtedly thanks to the sea of tourists we had to negotiate through down by the wharf)
Feel-good factor: Infinite quantities!! Thanks again, AG!

But, of course!

Who is this mysterious Mr. Ed? A horse? What? Do tell.

Sorry I wasn't there to share in the fun and meet BikeMomma, et al.

Sorry I couldn't meet you, as well, SK. I'm sure we'll have other opportunities, though. :) I think we were discussing another one in October.

Mr. Ed was a very nice guy (who was he again, AG??? Friend of yours I think....I missed that piece of info!) who ended up leading us almost the entire route. He wore a cool (hot??) flame jersey and matching socks, I noticed.

Thanks for the data, Bike Momma - I was definitely slower than you and Ed! By the time I met up with the endlessly patient AG for the last few miles, you guys were not even visible in the distance - but it's good to have a general idea of the ride time.

What a great ride! I have probably ridden this route at least 25 times. But this was by far the most fun! Thanks to everyone who made it possible. I talked to Mr. Ed today. He said he had a great time and to say, "Hi" to all of you.

I'd love to do it again soon. September and October usually have the nicest (warmest) weather in this area, so maybe we can squeeze a ride in there sometime.

And for those of you who had pre-ride anxiety about this event (you know who you are!! ;) ), you did GREAT! I knew you would. I hope this helped build a tiny bit of confidence. Don't put limits on yourself!

Just wanted to tell you I was thinking of all of you today.

My hubby and I were in Monterey last night/today for our anniversary (#11!!). Of course, I had to bring Flicka too, :D so she and I slipped away early this morning for a solo ride around 17 Mile Drive. There were TONS of cyclists out (I started out about 8:30am). I even rode with a group of about six for a short stretch when they came up on me from behind. I sped up and hung out with them until we got into traffic. It was truly heaven to be out there again. :p

From my hotel in Pacific Grove, I rode around the same roads, past Pebble Beach Resort where we had our lunch stop that day, and continued on up the hill (yyyeouch!) almost to the Hwy 1/Carmel entrance. Coming back down was wwwwhhhoooo-wheeeee fun! Unfortunately, I don't know exactly how fast I got up to, since the battery on my computer is pretty much dead. It only recorded part of the ride before it went kaput.

I didn't have time during the week/friday to get on the computer to invite you all for an encore ride (and they finally blocked the site at work...grrrr  ), but the thought was there, at least. ;) Wish I could have met up with you all again....next time!

Funny, I actually think I saw Mr. Ed on my way back in!! No jokes! :D AG, if you see Ed soon, tell him that if he was out near the wharf at about 10:15/:20 and he recognized me, I did see him (just wasn't SURE it was him!).

Jobob...looking forward to those pics. I was wondering about those myself. I know you took at least one of them. I was a witness. :p

Have a good Sunday, all....

Thanks for sharing the pics Jo!

I hope AG does this ride again. A weekend getaway to Monterey would be fun.

It was a blast.

Oh, and BikeMomma, thanks so much for the restaurant suggestion. Vito's in Pacific Grove was exactly what we wanted - a pleasant, casual Italian restaurant with great food.

Awesome! I'm so glad you liked it! We ate there again friday evening. Melt in your mouth good....I could eat there every night, honest. I had the halibut this time, wine sauce, veggies, side of pasta.....sigh. Yum yum yum.

The pics turned out good! Strange, but I don't have any pics of myself on the bike, so I think I'll copy/paste a couple of those that I'm in, plus the group shot for fond memory's sake. Everybody looks so happy to be out, and the scenery - fantastic. Thanks for posting them, Jobob!

Hey Jo - what kind of camera is that? Those photos are great, and you took mosy of them "on the roll," as I recall...

Thanks ! :o

It's a Canon PowerShot S410 Digital ELPH, 4 megapixels, 3x zoom lens. It's very compact and small enough to fit in a jersey pocket, but it's a little on the heavy side for that, so I prefer to keep it in my handlebar bag or bento box. It seems to be a very popular model, I've seen a lot of them out & about. It didn't cost a lot when I bought it over a year ago, but I imagine this model is obsolete by now so maybe you can pick it up really cheap.

I generally set it to the highest resolution (2272 x 1704) so then I'll have plently of pixels left over if I crop any shots - but as it turns out, the only picture I cropped out of the ones I posted was our group photo.

Shooting on the roll is very hit & miss - I set the lens for wide angle, and hold up the camera in the general direction and shoot, no viewfinder involved (otherwise you'd be peeling me up off the road in no time). The trick is to keep the camera more-or-less level with the horizon. And I delete many duds when I get home !

When I post photos on the web I resize them to 480 x 360.

hth, - Jo.

Thanks! I thought it was a Canon. Our household has a Canon s400 (?), but I don't seem to get my hands on it that much. It is kind of heavy. I'd like to find a "ruggedized" digital camera - I wonder if such a thing exists.

I like the group shot a lot - these are the only known photographs of me in my cycling gear.

And, ahem, speaking of cropping, I did notice a few shots where the reddish blob of BikerZ (or BikerZ's boobage!) *could* have been cropped out of the frame! :o

Thnaks again for posting them!

Sorry about that, Z :o - I was kind of in a hurry to post them so apart from the group shot I didn't mess around with cropping and such.

No problemo - It's a good reminder of the shrinkage I'm aiming for! :D
