I'll set up the next 8-week challenge for November/December. First weigh in will be this Friday - November 6th.

So let me know in this thread if you are interested in the next challenge. You can give me a goal weight if you want. Then on Friday, the first weight for this challenge.

I'll post the link at the end of the week.

Here's my motivation.
My unemployed DH has been biking tons all year.
All summer, I had to listen to our biking buds say "Man, you are getting skinny. And fast. When are you going to race? How come you're so skinny?"
Blah, blah, blah....
Yesterday, he went to the Dr's for something. They put him on the scale. Since his physical in March, he went from 164 to 158 (he's just shy of 6'). He's now officially skinnier than me. And even at my skinniest, I was barely skinnier than that. (I'm big boned. Yeah, that's it.)
So, in my depression, I did a major attack on the office jar of animal crackers yesterday. Not good.
So, I think I need to jump onto this bandwagon to keep me honest.
My goal is 155.

Hello Ladies!
I recently joined to be a member of this site. I am so excited! I would love to join the weight loss challenge i am hoping to lose about 10 pounds in 8 weeks. I would love it if someone could help to let me know how i jointhis weight loss challenge. and if there are any tips of diet and exercise that has been helping others.

Possegal
11-05-2009, 05:24 PM
Consider yourself joined. :) Tomorrow you can weigh in and post your weight and your goal for the end of the 8-week period. Most weigh in on Fridays but some do so Sat, Sun or Mon because it works with their weigh ins for Weight Watchers or other challenges. No matter to me, just post it when you know it.

As the challenge goes on, folks will post a lot about things that are working for, and against, them. You can glean a lot from the folks in this thread.

After tomorrow I'll post a link to the spreadsheet for all to be able to view.

Keep 'em coming folks. :)

I am so nervous about my weight today. I've been sick for the last two weeks - most tenacious cold ever! But it led to me losing a bit of weight since I wasn't eating much, no appetite. I keep joking that one weekend of eating normally and it will all come back on. I ate pretty normal yesterday (though I did well at avoiding the vending machine). So far, it stayed the same. But as it was, it left me needing to lose 1.4 lbs for this challenge. I changed my goal, now I need to work very hard to not gain 5-6 lbs back in the next couple of days. So - my goal may change if that happens. :)

135, I'm going to change my goal to 127. I ate really well this week - This week I started to swim regularly, which is something I can do while my stress fracture is healing. It's amazing how good it feels to finally be able to exercise. I sleep better. Everything feels.. better. And it's not as much of a struggle to eat well. Every little bit!

Hey girls wow you are all such an inspiration. I am struggling with overeating so exercise it not an issue right now its controlling my intake that is going to be really tough for me. I hope to lose ten pounds which if i lose 1-2 pounds a week i should be able to lose it. If i bike for 26 mies what should i typically eat in one day. I weigh 128 lbs.

I'm going to aim to cut back/burn 1000 calories a day but if I only do 700 I'll be happy with myself. :) If I ride for an hour and don't make any bad food choices I should be good. Although, most days I only ride for 30-40 minutes (my commute) I guess I'll just see how this week plays out :)

I was going to post a couple of ideas /recipes for a less diasastrous Thanksgiving- maybe this should go into the nutrition thread? Anyway- here they are:

1. Serve pumpkin pudding instead of pumpkin pie:

Make the pie filling following your favorite recipe, and bake it without a crust.
Even better, use nonfat evaporated milk. If you're really serious, swap out the sugar in the recipe for a sugar substitute.
Use cool whip or a light whipped cream

2 . Skip the candied sweet potatoes with marshmallows- this is a little lighter:

Microwave 3-4 med-large sweet potatoes, then mash them and stir in
3/4 cup plain yogurt

Peel and cut into chunks or slices: One tart green apple. Arrange pieces on the bottom of baking or casserole dish.

Mix 2 Tablespoons brown sugar with enough brandy or whiskey to "melt" the brown sugar. Mix in about 1/2 cup pecan pieces or halves. Soak for 15 minutes.

Spoon or pour the sweet potato & yogurt mixture over the apples, then spread the brown-sugar / pecan mixture over the top.

Cover and bake in an oven or heat in a microwave

3. Instead of the really high cal green bean casserole,

Steam or microwave green beans. Add a few lightly sauteed mushrooms or onions, and top with a sprinkling of almonds for crunch

4. Cranberry juice spritzers, dilute about with about half sparkling water.

Those are a few things we do. Anyone else?

Heavy sigh...

Last Monday was DH's birthday. He requested carrot cake. I complied - and had a couple small pieces over the course of the week. Then came Thanksgiving and all it entails - foods I normally don't prepare or eat plus pumpkin pie (which I LOVE), and my fall-themed gingerbread cookies. I did get in a couple power walks and a short bike ride, but the overindulgence won out and the scale showed it. 137 :(. It's my own fault. Back on track this week.

167.8 that would be 30 TE pounds and 37 total pounds. Thank you Possegal and TE, Friday weigh-ins have really helped keep me motivated. I know when I have lost my way eating the Friday weigh in looming over my head has helped me find my way again. My progress seems sooo slow to me but I feel great and look healthier and 37 pounds is a lot flab to be pushing up a hill on a bike.

Well, New Orleans was amazing, but with all the butter in the food (and, I won't lie, the Hurricanes) there, I'm glad I couldn't find a scale! I figured it was some kind of sign when the battery in my scale was broken when I got home too :)

Finally got the scale fixed today, and the damage is only 1/2 a pound :D

I set a pretty modest goal this challenge because of the holidays- to lose 4 lbs and get to 121.

It helps that I haven't been to many holiday parties, and that the weather has been reasonable for getting out on the bike.

I have a hard time lately actually getting to a scale. We don't own one, and I haven't been bike commuting much lately - the scale is in the locker room of my fitness center where I shower after riding in.
But I rode in this a.m.
162 for me, which I think is no change. I guess it's not bad, given how atrocious my diet (or lack thereof) has been lately with all the crazy holiday events.

Possegal - Go ahead an take me off the list. I'm going to drop out of this challenge for awhile. I realized last night that I've been doing this for over a year now and I've basically lost no weight.

I'm going to focus on training and fueling and forget weight loss for awhile (at least, forget stepping on a scale every week). For now, that's the plan...I may change my mind come January. ;)

I did the same thing. Although I peek here to see how everyone is doing.
Of course I have not stepped on the scale, but the pants never lie. They fit, but snugger than I want. Been "over fueling".

I passed my Nov-Dec goal - 120.8 this morning :-)

Although 120 was my original goal for the year, I have decided to to aim for something a little lower going in to the new year, since it's going so well, and will stick with the next challenge.

Thanks again Possegal for setting this up, and to everyone who is brave enough to keep posting publicly. It's been a life-long journey for me and almost always a challenge - I wish you all good success in getting through the holiday temptations and being successful in getting to your goals.

And that's the last time I'll be near a scale for the rest of December. And that's likely a good thing.
This effort was a success and a failure.
A success: I managed weight during the brutal holiday-heavy months. Quite honestly, bouncing around within a 5 pound range is pretty normal. I'm not going to sweat or fret over a plus or minus 2-3 pound range. I've been doing this for about 6 years now.
A failure: Well - the goal is to have a net negative trend....and THAT certainly didn't happen. I suppose I could have tried harder. << shrug>>

Oh yes, there will be a January/February challenge. I've not been very diligent, therefore not very successful. But the madness must stop! I've been working on this video from pictures and vid clips taken when my family does the Livestrong Challenge in Philly. Seeing myself in that lycra, well let's just say it wasn't pretty. :) Next year has GOT to be different!

After a 2+ week hiatus to travel home to spend time with my family for the holidays, I'm officially back. Both physically and 'on the wagon' so to speak. Even though I feared much worse, my weight on January 1 was 137. After just a few days of self-control and lots of fruits and veggies, I weighed in yesterday at 135, which is just under my pre-Christmas weight!

Thanks everyone for participating! I think this challenge really helped me to minimize the damage over the holidays.
