I'm thinking about next spring..... this year I bought a Madone to replace my OCR so I was thinking about putting some flat bars (change the shifters/brakes) and maybe some panniers on the OCR and making it a commuter. My ride to work is 30 miles each way so I'm planning on just once a week.
What do you think? Or should I just get an inexpensive steel frame with more of an MTB geometry?

I commuted for a while on my OCR. I put a rack on the back, put on some super durable Armadillo tires, and it was good to go. It was definitely cheaper than buying a new bike and worked like a dream. Light, fast, and strong. :)

I really liked my OCR3 for commuting. The bike was too big I found out later was the only reason I don't still have it. For a road bike they are relatively upright so good for seeing whats going on.
