I don't have one yet, but my goal is to find a senior Newfie when I retire. There is a group in central Indiana that places older Newfoundlands for free when the dog is 8 or older. That only leaves a few years but I am drawn to senior animals. I currently have two 80 pound retrievers, but I can't wait to get a really big dog!

I had a Newfie cross that we got from the shelter. He was probably crossed witha wolfhound. Awesome dog. We, very sadly, gave him to another woman after we moved into an apartment and he didn't adjust well. Now he's living on a farm and very happy. It's a long story and I'm running out the door. I'll post pics later if you like

My next door neighbors have the sweetest Newfie. My kids just adore him.

I'm drawn to senior dogs, too! Mine was a "senior" when I adopted him and he was so easy.

I saw the biggest Bernese Mountain dog the other day. He was absolutely humongous and beautiful.

I've known a few, but never owned one. I love them and the ones I knew were just wonderful dogs! I had never seen brown ones until one day at the pet store when a couple walked around a corner with two and it took my breath away, it was like she had 2 brown bears on a leash. :)

I've had 2 Newfs, both from breed club rescue. The first was 7 when we got her, and lived to 2 month short of her 15th birthday, so they can have long lives. The second we got at 9 weeks, part of a litter surrendered to the club rescue, she only made it to 11. Both were wonderful dogs, but yes I loved the first more. Her personality was everything a Newf is supposed to be. The second was a mis-mating and always was a little too hyper and nervous. But still, she was a great dog and I loved her too. If you had multiple dogs, you know and accept that some just are more special than others, and don't hold it against the others. I won't be getting another Newf because we found that our house is not good for big, old dogs. Neither girl could make it upstairs to our bedroom after age 10 and it distressed both of them. Even getting outdoors was difficult, and slippery floors were also a problem. (I think Fidelity must have gotten the idea for the "follow the line" ads from a sneak peak into our house with its multiple runners leading to the doors and dog dishes.) Good luck with your choice.
