I'll start the thread this week.

I will run this week. I will run this week. I will run this week. I will run this week. I will run this week. I will run this week. I will run this week. I will run this week. I will run this week. I will run this week. I will run this week. I will run this week. I will run this week . . .
:)

My SIL ran a 4 hr marathon last weekend. She is my inspiration to get back out there and hit the pavement.

A 4 hr marathon? That is inspiring!

Now that winter is setting in, I think I'll be doing more running than riding, since I'm not a fan of the trainer. My plan for the week is just to run twice (I'm taking today for recovery :) ). Hopefully they will both be longer than 30 min, but I'll take what I can get.

Last night at dinner I ran into a woman who used to regularly kick my @ss at bicycle races, 20 years ago.

Sunday when I ran my first half-marathon, she ran the full marathon in 3:43. (Her overall pace was identical to the pace I was so proud of for my last two miles.)

The difference is, I don't even try to compete with her now.

I have an urge to run but I am reading that I should recover this week.

So, I rode this morning, 15.5 miles, and will ride back tonight the same miles. Taking it easy at 15 mph and spinning it out.

Tanking up and eating lots of carbs.

When oh when can I safely run again? I am thinking Thursday?

I have a trail race 11/22 and I want to make sure I train properly for it.

I rode 12 easy miles yesterday. It really loosened up the stiffness is my quads. Today I walked to work (all of 8 minutes) and other than walking home, I don't have any plans but stretching.

I think I'll go for a 30-60 minute run tomorrow. Based on how I feel today (a little sore, but not bad), that distance should be doable.

I'm leaving for Cabo on Thursday morning for a long weekend trip with 6 girlfriends. I'll bring my running shoes and plan to run on the beach at least 2 mornings while there. Almost all my girlfriends are runners, so we'll all drag our butts out there together. Friday is my 40th birthday, and I definitely plan to run that morning in celebration!

I got 2.5 miles in this morning at 5 AM. Felt pretty good.

My goal is to get two more runs in this week, another 2 miler and a 4 miler on the weekend.

I am suppose to do my first real trail race on Saturday. But my hip has been bothering me since last week. I think maybe it's bursitis. It fits the on line description anyway. Funny, it seemed to be cycling that pushed it over the edge though. Yesterday it hurt so badly, I didn't even want to go to work. Rest, ice and Advil seem to be helping.

The race is a 10K and because of all the rain we've had, they may move it onto the road. The mud out at the reservoir is super slippery. If it becomes a road race, that will make it easier to decide to stay home if I don't think I've recovered enough.

The trouble with bursitis is apparently it is reoccuring. "Don't do what causes the pain." Great, except I want to run and ride. It's got a week to get better, before I go see the doctor.

Today's run around the neighborhood was better form-wise than the previous three (not sure what my problem is, but it seems to be tight adductors again--whenever that happens it's harder to run well) but this time my GI tract decided not to cooperate so I had to make an unscheduled pit stop. It's been an off week...

I wish I'd read as much about recovery as I did about training, ahead of time.

I had to teach aerobics yesterday (wasn't that fun) and I have to teach again tomorrow morning. No risers, no impact, no legwork - luckily my participants aren't very athletic and they don't mind.

I should've taken the day off today but it was absolutely GORGEOUS and one of my riding buddies decided to take the day off work. She sent out a general call and everyone else begged off. I warned her I was going to be slo-o-o-ow.

Maybe I'll take the day off Thursday. Or, maybe I'll go for a little run. :o

Where is the pain located? If it is on the outside of the hip over the greater trochanter, it could be IT band related--have you ever had ITB issues?

Veronica
10-20-2009, 01:27 PM
I don't think it's IT band because it hurts when I lie on it.

Veronica

I was thinking more along the lines of, the IT band rubbing against the bursa and irritating it resulting in soreness (that stays even after you finish the workout, unlike the typical ITB knee pain).

Today was my second treadmill run this week. My goal is to ease back into running and do it without injury this time. I ran for 15 minutes, making sure to stop before my hip hurt, and then walked for another 15. Even did a few minutes of barefoot walking to strengthen and practice form.

I'm feeling very impatient with these little runs, but exhilarated by the fact that there hasn't been any "bad" pain. Gotta stay focused and patient!

I am hoping to introduce Tuesday Colby to Sunday Colby so they can run together. Tuesday Colby ran 8 miles in 1:10 today (yeah. 8:45 miles ). Apparently last week's Tuesday run wasn't a fluke either.

The running plan I'm on calls for longer Tuesday runs at "goal pace", but I've been doing them at "sustainable effort pace" which is more aggressive, but it's not like I'm crawling across the last mile or in pain the next day. I really just want to run my marathon around 10 minute miles (finish under 4:30). I have been doing my Sunday runs at approximate "goal pace" but trying to sustain a reasonable heart rate, so it's somewhere between "goal pace" and "endurance pace" in reality.

I can tell that my husband has been hanging around me for too long, the first words out of his mouth during this conversation were "so what do you do differently on Sunday? Maybe you need to get up earlier? What have you been eating?" ;)

Hang in there... it's a long road, but it's well worth pacing yourself and waiting.

My second-to-last rest week, before I start my half-marathon training program. I have Round 2 of Trigger Point Therapy for my hip (sounds similar to your hip, Veronica*) tomorrow. Round 1 relieved the pain for a few days, but I think it's going to take a little more for my muscles to surrender for good.

Friday, I am looking forward to a relaxed five-miler with my mentor. It is sometimes difficult for us to go slow, but we have plenty of fast miles ahead of us this winter. :)

* Veronica, I was having bursitis-like symptoms (very painful at times), and the therapist said I probably did have bursitis. But she thought it was because my the right side of my pelvis was tipped forward and down (probably from the birth of my daughter) so we are working on fixing that, which hopefully will fix the bursitis.

Had one of the best runs in a while last night. It was kind of soggy outside as it had been raining all day, but I decided to wear the VFFs anyway & run on the grass beside the sidewalk 50% of the time. It was a really fun 6.2 miles on a new route. :D

I hope our 13.1 ladies are recovering well!! Congrats again on your finishes.

I wasn't planning to run today (have been working my butt off on a school paper) but my upstairs neighbor knocked on the door asking if I was interested in joining her on a run in the neighborhood. I was getting really tired of sitting in front of the computer, so I went. We did some laps around the park across the street, no major distance, but it was fun. I did the usual jumping over things etc. and I think she found it amusing. Now maybe I will be able to concentrate to finish this paper tonight!

Last weekend I did the "Fall Five Miler" with some friends. For one friend, it was her first time running that length, so I tried to be a really good cheerleader. We had a lot of fun. This weekend, I am running my first 5K:p I have never run one before!!! I am actually pretty excited. I got a 4 miler and a 5 miler in this week, and I am planning on 4 again tonight. I would really like to run fast in my 5K, since I have spent the whole year running long and slow:rolleyes:

Oh I'm jealous.

I haven't had a day completely off since the 13.1, and while most of me feels pretty good, there's enough lingering/aerobics-exacerbated soreness in my quads that I'm thinking I really ought to take a rest day today.

But it's so beautiful outside... maybe a walk with DH, anyhow.

I forced myself to take another day off. I will be walking at lunch, though.
I am antsy to run but at the same time, I know that I should rest.

I have the opposite problem - I haven't felt like doing *anything*. I'm chalking it up to a recovery week. I've got a cross race this weekend, so that'll get the blood pumping. And when I fall over nearly dead at the end, I'll be reminded why I need to work out during the week. :)

Yesterday's run was the best I've had in a long time. I was going to a friend's house to hang out for the evening and did my run on an easy trail near her house before going over there. I only ran for about half an hour and would have been happy to go longer but it was getting really dark on the trail starting about halfway through the run (I didn't realize it would get that dark that early--I started about 5:45). Fortunately, it was a pretty easy trail so there wasn't too much to trip on in the dark (and I think the lack of visibility helped me make sure to pick up my feet). It was sort of a fun adventure but I don't think I will make a habit of running trails in the dark, at least without a buddy. BTW, all everybody's races have inspired me to sign up for one a week from today--I found out about an "English-style XC race" in Amherst that sounded like fun so I'll give it a try. It's 3 miles, on a farm, with "fences and hay barriers" to negotiate along the way. Much more fun than a road race IMO. Will have to let everyone know how it goes!

Jolt, that sounds like great fun!

I went for a little jog today, first time since Sunday's half. I'd only intended to do three laps of the one-mile trail, but I didn't want to stop. :o So four miles, slow and easy.

Now I need to choose my first 26.2... Disney and Melbourne are too soon. The spring marathons up north, although they're not super hilly, would mean coming right back to race in the hills after training in the flats all winter. Doesn't sound like much fun. Waiting 'til Columbus next fall might be the most sensible thing, but I'd really like to have the summer for cycling and not worrying about marathon training. Miami in March?

Crankin
10-24-2009, 10:23 AM
Miami in March sounds good. I think it would be hard to train for a marathon and ride at the same time. Of course, this is coming from someone who can barely ride after running 4 miles.
OK, tested out the new shoes. Bunion/blister problem is solved. Yay! They are lighter/less cushioning and generally felt great.
Next issue, severe soreness after my run last week. Well. after running yesterday, I stretched like crazy, used the foam roller and woke up with only a little residual soreness in my hamstrings. It's more at the bottom of the hamstring. I did a 16 minute yoga warm up before going out the door and I decided I need more of a walking warm up, which is hard for me; I didn't lose enough running fitness to have to walk/jog a lot, but maybe I should. Anyway, I walked the first 3/4 mile, down the steep hill and walked/ran another 1/4 mile. I then ran about 2.5 miles, maybe 3, including some significant hill work, although the majority was on a flat, very bumpy sidewalk. About half way, my left hamstring really started cramping, but slowing and walking made it feel worse. And my hip problem flared up, but it's not as bad as it could be. I came home and attacked the hamstrings and hip with the foam roller and did various other stretches.
I'm a little worried that my hip might be related to the osteoporosis issue (in the health thread), but since it started only after increasing my mileage last summer, I am not sure. Also not completely convinced it really is a disc issue. I guess maybe I should go for that MRI.
Well, I'm not stopping the running even though I am damn slow and seem to be injured half of the time.

First 5k ever! 27:02!! I had a one mile PR with 7:56!!!! I was super thrilled. The rest of the race was...well....it benefited a place called hillside. Enough said :-) It was hilly hilly hilly after the first mile, so I did what I could to salvage the time. 13th woman, which makes me really happy. I am trying to spin some of my long distance fitness into a few short races this fall. I think on a flatter course, I could maintain that first mile pace.... So excited! AND to top it off, my hip feels great!

Afterwards, I met a friend at a rock climbing gym, and I made it up a route I have been trying to do since July! It was a good athletic day for me :D:D:D

Miami in March sounds like a dream, considering I just signed up for Hyannis in February. Brrr! Only 13.1, though the "full course" option is available.

OakLeaf
10-24-2009, 11:29 AM
Duh, Miami is the last weekend in January. Don't know why I thought March. Maybe Melbourne is in March.

Hyannis in February?:eek: I'm getting cold just thinking about that!

Crankin
10-24-2009, 12:40 PM
Well, a lot of the time it is quite a bit warmer in Hyannis in the winter than even just north of the canal. Hasn't been true the last year or so, but generally you can ride quite easily there all year round, as they really don't get as much snow and the temperatures are moderated by the ocean. So, while it might be 30 or 25 by me, it will be 40 there. I think that's a good temperature for running!
But Miami in January sounds good, too, but probably not enough time to train for a marathon?

Just got home from the 27 Mile trail-run. Lots of tired, lots of hills, lots of insanely beautiful sights. It took close to 8hrs. much longer than expected, that's the most amount of hours I've ever spent running, but my buddy had some knee trouble which had us walking on & off the last 7 miles. :D Ran the first 8 miles in the dark w/ headlamps. Loved it. Will post pictures & hopefully some video later, right now I need a shower & sustenance. I'm as foggy as Halloween right now.

Found some energy, here's my first attempt at youtube & taping running. Forgive the poor quality and shakiness.

I am behind on logging (well just back from vaca and behind on everything).
I started getting in regular runs on 10/20. I ran 5 out of 7 days last week. Between 3 & 5 miles each time. VERY slow right now. Still HOT here in Florida (except for a day or two). Total week mileage 21.2
17 weeks till marathon!
Today is rest day. So I'll be out in the dark getting in my 4 miles in the morning. I'll post the fun-ness later!
