No doubt the physical thrill and joy of cycling remains central to why I've hung onto cycling for so long. But the sport/activity offers so many facets to enjoy bikes: bicycle-related art and jewellery, fashion, urban design, dance (as in cycling choreography), music made from bike parts, transportation (and all creative vehicle inventions based on bike), etc.
Would football offer this range of human activity exploration, creativity/inventiveness and fun? Maybe I just don't know enough about the 'game'.
