With the release of Windows 7 this week, apparently next Wed, Thursday and Friday will be blackout days at Best Buy. If you don't like crowds, you best stay away!

Apparently Windows 7 is pretty amazing. I am looking forward to getting it on my new netbook.

My computer conked out and I had to get a new one with Vista.
Vista sucks hard.
I will probably upgrade to W7.

If you think Vista is bad, you must not have had the misfortune to have a computer that came with Windows ME--that one created an even stronger vacuum! My computer in college came with that OS and it was always crashing.

I'm not having any problems with Vista. But I get a free upgrade to 7 since my laptop is only a couple of months old.

I plan to wait awhile to upgrade because I want to make sure all the drivers I need have been upgraded.

I don't think Vista is very good for photo filing. That's my major beef.
I'm really going to need it when I go back to school in January as a Digital Media major.

Well I've read that 7 is much better than Vista. Although I don't remember specifically reading about photo filing.

I do like the commercials with the little girl and the happy words. I love the slide with the bunny surrounded by marshmallows.

Did I spell "marshmallows" right? Is it "mallows" or "mellows"? I guess if I don't know, that means I need to eat more of them...

NYB it is indeed "mallow."

I just got a new laptop, with Vista. Haven't had it long enough for it to slap me. I'm not impressed with laptop - it's a Dell studio. Still haven't figured out how to turn it off.......

I do have free upgrade to 7, but my Computrainer program will not be compatible..I guess I'll just have to wait.

Zen - you really going back to school? Awesome!!!

I've been using Windows 7 on my work computer for well over a month now...I absolutely LOVE IT!!! I work at a college, so we were fortunate enough to get an early release. I cannot say enough great things about Windows 7. I was upgraded from XP Pro (our college never migrated to Vista, because it sucked so bad), and it is lightyears ahead of XP Pro (and I was a big fan of XP, so for me to say that, is really saying something). There are so many very cool features with 7...you all are gonna love it! ;) FWIW, I have an iMac with Snow Leopard OS X for home use and love that just as equally as I love my Windows 7 at work.

A silly question so I apologize upfront. How do you know if you get a free upgrade? I purchased a new computer in August of this year and it came with Vista, does it qualify?

It would have had a coupon in the box if it did.

My brother's been using win 7 for a couple of weeks, he loves it. He did the upgrade from vista.

I never went to vista, so I'm debating whether to make the jump to 7 or not...

my laptop has been misbehaving of late, and I can't figure out what's going on. The choice is to do the "restore to fresh out of the box" thing and reinstall everything -- and all the updates -- or to start with a new laptop. I still have to install everything and all the updates, but at least it's on new technology and new parts, if the problems were to turn out to be hardware related!

I'm leaning toward the new laptop. DH says, "you don't get a new computer!" I think he wants one too!

The netbooks have gotten so cheap - maybe you're allowed a netbook and not a computer.

Last christmas, I replaced my laptop (8 lb behmouth from 2001 that mostly worked fine, pieces of plastic case falling off) with a little dell mini netbook... and seriously, I've only booted the laptop up a couple times in the last year... because the mini is more than enough for what I need and sooo light in comparison. I do have a nice desktop though...

If you think Vista is bad, you must not have had the misfortune to have a computer that came with Windows ME--that one created an even stronger vacuum! My computer in college came with that OS and it was always crashing.

I had to support my mom's computers on Windows ME for quite a few years (she is an independent contractor). The only reason I didn't switch the OS is because I could fix most things through DOS at that time, and Windows ME sucked so much that no one bothered to write computer viruses for it (it was that different from the other operating systems.) So ME was kind of useful in its own way.

Now she's moved on to a Mac, hurrah! Now I can fix things in Unix if necessary... and remotely... and best of all I never had to deal with Vista / loss of DOS (My first OS was DOS 1.1, truly! But of course I've dealt with many OSes since then... VAX, Unix, AS/400... I switched over to the Mac platform for OSX / Unix).

The Toshiba mini netbook is getting RAVE reviews, so check it out. Please be aware that some netbooks will only have Window 7 Starter Edition, so check out which version is on it before you buy!

FYI for folks planning to upgrade (or wondering about it), the Washington Post's personal tech columnist has tested the upgrade from Vista and XP to Win 7.

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/fasterforward/2009/10/windows_7_our_long_national_vi.html

The link to "today's column" in the second sentence of the blog post takes you to his comparison of 7 to Vista.
