Really, leggings are in style? Missed this one. Problem of spending too much time on bike instead of paying attention to fashion trends. I guess the fashion advice might be different for women under 40 on how to wear leggings and type of shoes.
But cyclists know how to carry this fashion and make it hip ...all the time without changing out of our tights and cycling shoes. :)
Or maybe the leggings with structured waistband and dressier look, will just make the bike commute more convenient.
N.B.: I do enjoy fashion but honest don't have the energy (nor money) to keep current even 80% of time.

Noooo..not leggings  I remember wearing some dreadful ones :o Oh dear..that was the early 80's though!
Speaking of bad fashions that have returned...acid washed jeans..Oh dear oh dear..I saw someone wearing them yesterday and thought..AGGH..please do not tell me they're back..aaagghhh...
Next thing ya know, MC hammer & all that kind of early 90's music will be popular again...

Hey, I LIKED MC Hammer!:D We had some great dance routines to his music. Who can stand still when you hear "Can't Touch This"?

Yea, and I like leggings with a nice short dress or skirt....
But, probably not acceptable for someone my age.

Wish I still had the body to put in them that I had in the 80's;)

Hammer pants were very much in style in Spain this summer. I can't imagine being able to ride in those! More power to her!

I was at a local wine and food contest last night in Downtown Miami, leggings everywhere. I saw a couple of girls in leather ones. It's still in the 80's down here(temperature wise) and well, I wore capris and a blouse, but yeah...they're back.
But, probably not acceptable for someone my age.
Acceptable?
Who decides that?
I'm wearing some today, under a skirt and with knee high boots.
I'm almost 52.
BTW, they've been "back" for some years now.

I wear black leggings (either capri or full length depending on the season) almost every day. I think I look great in them, and they are super versatile and comfy. I'm 55. :)

You just don't see them as often down here, because it's hotter (not this year, though). I own some and would love to wear them, but I don't have the appropriate overthings to wear just yet. Little girls wear them all the time. Leggings were a great way for little girls to wear their dresses one more year, back in the day, as I remember it.

I must be Rip van Winkle (or Sleeping Beauty :p): don't know who is MC Hammer.
Crankin: Bet you could wear leather leggings and look great. Cycling helps us all a great deal in this area.
My idea of a little dress thingy ontop of leggings...is still a long T-shirt. Am SO behind the times. Part of my fashion cluelessness is that I now rarely look at fashion magazines and walk around in dress stores, shopping malls. We don't go to bars, clubs, just either cheaper restaurants locally or occasional gourmet like expensive places when out of town. I seriously don't pay attention to overall trends what people are wearing on the street.
It's been just going to grocery stores, pharmacy and sporting goods/bike shops in nearly the past 2 years. I worked at a construction site (in the office) previously, so wore jeans 70% of the time. And the jeans were not in style. My tops were highly conservative and classic ..ie. probably boring.
If piqued, I do have an interest in fashion, but now purely from artistic and craftsmanship standpoint since I did sew alot before cycling.

Lisa and Zen, what do your wear on your feet, i.e. as in socks when you wear leggings with a skirt and shoes? If you are wearing boots, not a problem, but it looks kinda weird to have the leggings, socks, and shoes. I just can't go without foot coverings when it's cold out, although it looks like everyone else around here does.
Shootingstar, the long t shirt and leggings is exactly the style that is popular now. I think it would be quite comfortable. I am looking for a long sweater/short dress to "try out" the look. I have scoped out an Ibex one, but it's really expensive, so I probably will try something else. But help me with the footwear!
Ballet flats.
Long loose sweater with a loose belt at the hips.
Lemme see can I find a photo.
see the second photo in this blog (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://i637.photobucket.com/albums/uu91/aimmr16/IMG_8340Small.jpg&imgrefurl=http://thingsaboutiqueownersees.blogspot.com/2009/08/sunday-monday.html&usg=__gS0FCge0BKgWTYoMyyVtBepkFdM=&h=640&w=480&sz=49&hl=en&start=67&um=1&tbnid=Oon7D69xEw98-M:&tbnh=137&tbnw=103&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dleggings%2Bbelt%2B%2Band%2Btunic%2Bsweater%26ndsp%3D18%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rlz%3D1R1GGGL_enUS344US344%26sa%3DN%26start%3D54%26um%3D1) or search images for "leggings belt tunic sweater"
Little ballet flats go well with leggings, and I don't wear socks with those. I suppose they sell those peds socks so you can have something over your feet but it won't be visible. And I saw Hammer pants all over Italy this summer. Those, and sandle/boot things that looked like an ankle boot, but had the heel and toe portion cut out. It was wacky.

Yes! Kind of like a mod version of Gladiator sandals. They were the shoe of choice with the Hammer pants. Do you suppose it's heading our way? Am I going to regret not buying some when I had the chance?
I love the idea of leggings and a short skirt with my Frye engineer boots, but by the time I get around to getting the pieces that all work together, you all will be sporting the Hammer pants, and I'll again be left in the style dust. :p

So, I guess I am the only one who would get cold wearing ballet flats with leggings? Like there's that little area around the lower calves/ankle/top of foot that has bare skin. Can't imagine that when it's even 45 out.
Guess I am a wimp.

Oh please no! I couldn't wear this look in the 80's when I was a teenager - I sure as hell can't pull it off now. Damn that leggings and big sweater look!

Pat Benetar is baaaaaaack! I, for one, have a MUCH better body now than I did in the 80s. So bring it on. I'm 42, uh, I mean 41.
But I still prefer jeans.

Me too (or I will by January). But large legs and a tiny waist are not flattered by a look like the one above, no matter how fit I am! :p

Truthfully, those are better than 'leggings'. Better fit and quality of the material is much higher.

No Hammer pants, thank you.
I can't touch them ;)

Robin, I just wear any shoes I want with my skirt and leggings. i kind of bunch the socks down so they aren't too high.

agree with Susan for Lisa's outfit.
That capri-skort combo looks interesting. Useful for some folks.
Photo from 7 yrs. ago. I had and wore spandex jeans-leggings. Yes, unbelievable. Found them in a bargain basement place. Must have worn them for 3 years or so...often for commuting purposes and changed at work.

shootingstar, you look great! I like those jeansish leggings for cycling around town. For a while in the 80s-90s, it was the rage to wear spandex cycling shorts that were printed to look like denim jeans, complete with fake pockets. I never got into that (some pro team had them). But for commuting long pants, that's okay.

More ideas..can be adapted for cycling:
http://www.myshape.com/casual-wear/lifestyle/shop/fashion-outfits/72/5 use small arrow buttons to go forward-backward to see other outfit combinations that include leggings. Price tag is kinda unreal for some pieces. But good for stylish ideas and how to wear certain types of pieces.
http://www.plum.ca/i.cfm/p/season/s/fall_09 Some leggings combos here for ideas.
http://buzzer.translink.ca/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/img_0242.jpg Now, if one lengthened those knickers/long shorts abit..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edoqyU-bOgo The lst 2008 Momentum bike fashion and art show where I met Mimi and saw her famed watercolour painting which is now part of a TE jersey.
Hey, maybe pouffy bloomer shorts will come back in style. Well, ok...at least for ...Hallowe'en. :D
This would explain part of our new dress code at work. It expressly forbids the sweater + legging combination, and I was thinking why do we need to outlaw something that went out of fashion 20 years ago? Now I understand!

Lisa, I think the socks look better with the capri length (which on me would be at my mid calf!) than with full length leggings. A tall person can pull it off a bit better. I have to pay a little more attention to proportions and how many lines I have going across my short body. As soon as I find a long sweater, I will buy the leggings and figure out the shoes.

Im 41 and I LOVE leggings! Nothing better to wear little short skirts and cover up my spider veins( too much retail work/standing).
I have a dress that looks like a 1960s smock( or maternity dress!) that looks cute with mine and engineer boots.
I also wear them with any dress I own, plus ballet flats or long boots if its cold.
Nicely, if I change at gym, when I ride to work and then put on work clothes for the short ride to work, it looks like cycling togs.
Oh and any lady who rides, despite her weight, is going to look good in leggins. I mean even if you have a big booty, your calves will be superb and legs toned.
Ive seen some pretty large ladies riding in tight winter longs and they still had nice legs.
BUt acid washed jeans:eek: and NO NO NO to leggins printed like denim, eww! The goth in me revolts!

Leggings have been in fashion in NZ's for years... acutally I suspect that we're still riding the fashion wave from when they were in last time :D:D:D:D

I love fashion.
Nevermind that I wear jeans and a shirt every single day of my life.
We touched upon half of these: 6 Fashion Trends to Avoid (http://lifestyle.msn.com/your-look/everyday-style/staticslideshowoprah.aspx?cp-documentid=22040420>1=32002). So while we're "out of fashion" for not wearing the trends, we're "with it" by agreeing with the experts to avoid them.

ooh poofs! sign me up!! I love madonnas dress!!
To go on a plane today , I am wearing ( no joke) a pair of black plastic pants with chartreuse piping down side, a skirt made of tent fabric, black and chartreuse over it( with big side pockets in the same colour) and a tank top with a big cut out edged in chartreuse plastic!
My husband took one look at the c lothes( dance party stuff) and said, it looks like cycling gear for off the bike! I said, Im sick of trying to look normal and its boreing!! He agreed, and said girls are lucky, they can get away with it.I have to be a rock star or something, to do that!

Yep. I guess they were rubberized pants which wasnt much better. It was about 15 degrees when I got on ( Co) and yes, its was 44 minutes( howdya guess, hehehe!)
Sitting in those pants, for about 5 hours was hard, later on. It was pretty hot in them. It was about 5owhen I bailed out, vowing never to wear them for that long again.
I was a :Dhit at the campground tho'!!
