Did you ladies see there is a chance of snow overnight tonight and tomorrow morning? Am I crazy or is this awfully early to start thinking about studded tires, wool socks, booties, face covers, and all that other winter gear?

I've been thinking the same thing, and I'm quite a bit further south than you.
I've been wearing wool socks and a Buff as a face cover already. I'm already considering my softshell jacket for morning commutes and I put cleats on my winter cycling boots last night. I didn't think I'd need the winter softshell or boots until at least December!
I hope that this isn't some kind of bad omen....*knocks wood* Right now, we're getting socked by one rainy nor'easter, with another one set to arrive later this weekend
well, this is norway and all that, but still: we're having brilliant autumn weather complete with sub-freezing mornings. i've fetched down and worn my winter tights and winter jacket, have worn overshoes for a couple of weeks already, and have heard many a studded tire crunch past on my commute. I'm holding off on the studs until I really have to, though.

I wore 3 layers on top today, and a buff over my face. It's cold. It's looking like the snow will miss me, though. We usually don't get any until January.

I am out near the Berkshires in western Mass, and there is snow in the forecast for the next couple of days. Wet snow + leaves on the trees= power outage. :(

No snow here, but we've got a nor'easter today with highs in the 40s for the next few days.
I'm trying to figure out how to convince myself that I really do want to go to the gym tonight -- it's a 15 minute walk each way. No fun in a cold rain.

Bah, what's a few flurries in October? ;)
Time to pull on the merino stuff and feel cozy. :D

We had snow last week and I've already gotten 2 ski days in. Now I get to enjoy Indian summer.
Ack, sorry. I wrote before noticing that the subforum was USA, Northeast. Thought I was just in preview mode and hadn't posted, but bing, here it was. Just ignore me ;-)

Go ahead and gloat. It won't be long before you're complaining about the heat. :p Enjoy the summer, we will live vicariously through you.
Let's hope an early start to the cold means a super-early arrival of spring (January, perhaps?).

Actually, i'm whinging about the heat today :o & it's not that hot! I went for a ride this afternoon & I remembered there's no shade really along any of the paths in Perth :(
I'll just send visions of warm sunshiny days to you :)

Woke up this AM to 2 inches of snow on the ground - I just place another order for MORE winter cycling clothes (since this is the first year I didn't hang up the bike on Labor Day - new bike - can't do that) - What ever happened to global warming??? We had a very early, very cold winter last year, no spring, a summer that practically never got over 80 and now another early winter - NO - It can't be true!!!

Snow is forecast for Virginia tonight...and I bet in Zen's neck of the woods, too. Not down here where I live, mind you, but further up and out. Pretty rare down in these parts this time of year.

Yeah I just read they're forecasting "a few flakes" north and west of DC.
Worse, I read 2 long-range forecasts that said this winter will be colder than average in the mid-Atlantic. :(:(:(
I just bought down-filled gloves from LL Bean. Part of my quest for my personal holy grail, a pair of gloves that actually keep my hands warm during low-level activities like walking around outside or driving the car. I would have bought the down mittens but they didn't have my size (I was at their store, not buying online). I will probably try to get the mittens, too, just for fun.

I agree (as I'm sitting here dressed head to toe in wool)!

It was snowing furiously at my house this morning. I am at 1200' elevation and it makes difference here in MA. I work in Lowell and most points east of Fitchburg are between 100-300' msl. By the time I got to Fitchburg it was rain and when I got to rt 495 and in Lowell there hadn't been any precipitation, or it was very light. The ground is still warm so it didn't accumulate much and was gone by the time I got home this evening of course. But seeing it snow so hard this morning was a little disconcerting. I was just getting used to the summer we never had.
It was snow in Worcester...melted as soon as it hit the ground, but it was definitely snowing!

WE received a couple of inches last week, and in fact, one of the local ski resorts has opened for the year. This week however, the temps are supposed to hit 50 (YIPEE) so we'll see how everything turns out. It definitely has been a cold fall.
It has been fun to be back on the mtn bike though... a great way to see the colors and duck away from the wind. Every year when I change from my road bike to my mtn bike, it is an absolute blast! I'm just as excited now as I was in the spring to be riding:D Of course once snow is here, then we'll put on the chains or studded tires and ride. And when the weather isn't right for that, we'll xc ski or snowshoe the AT..FUN FUN!!

Oh I love snow!
Post some pics of your snow if you get a chance.:)
Yup, we had snow here too. I've never been on cross-country skis in October before!

Rode in short sleeves and shorts this afternoon. I had the luck of the carpet cleaners coming to my internship site and my supervisor sent us home at 2:30, to avoid the toxic fumes.
It's only going to be 50 tomorrow, but that's fine with me. Another rainy Saturday, though.
Yes, this is why I love New England.
