I need music recommendations from you'uns. Mr. Sundial is burned out on his music for his workouts. He likes classic rock and southern rock and on his iPod he has U2, Van Halen, AC/DC, ZZ Top, some Led Zeppelin.

Don't know that much about the new bands and if any of you have recommendations, please post away. :)

Mika: Life in Cartoon Motion. My daughter has that CD and it's delightful! Quirky, upbeat, melodic, guaranteed to make you smile.

Roscoe Holcomb--a banjo player??

OneRepublic has a nice mellow sound, but maybe too mellow for cycling. We have John Mayer and he has a nice sound.

Knot, your video--LOL! It made me want to get up and dance. Very good beat and makes your foot tap. :)

Foo Fighters--a little too much intensity. Great music to get going in the morning though, especially on a rainy day.

Mika does put a smile on my face.....but it's still not what we're looking for. :(

Looking for something that makes you want to bang your head, but not in the sense of heavy metal if you get my drift.

I think of him more as an amazing singer. He's...how should I say...an acquired taste.

Hey Sundial:) I was in a music rut too before I started teaching Spinning at my gym. Now I am constantly looking for new music. Pandora radio is also a great tool to find bands with the same sound. It's free and works great! Type in a band you already like and it does the rest... http://www.pandora.com/#/stations/create/

Below some things outta my current library that are rock...

Papa Roach: Lifeline, Scars, and this from them...

...To Be Loved (comes as CLEAN radio edit too--my kid loves WWE that's how I found it:o)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXPd0PnpXjY

Gotta comment-
Good hard core sprint interval rock song I love to use in class...

"...we are taking back to a hard core level... you better be ready, put your pedal (& bici pedals count;)) to the metal... GO! ...I never give up, I never give in... I just wanna be loved... ". Visualize some friendly competition against one of his guy ride buddies and hammer it out like there is no tomorrow (or hounds from h*ell chasing--whatever works for ya! lol).

Sick Puppies: You're Going Down (beat the bike up song, bad day at work--also from WWE)
Skillet: Monster (more WWE find... core rock sound)
Seether: Fake It, Broken, Breakdown, Rise Above This
Shinedown: 2nd Chance, Sound of Madness, Devour
3 Doors Down: Kryrptonite, Let Me Be Myself, It's Not My Time
Red Hot Chili Peppers: Otherside, Scar Tissue, Give It Away
Stone Temple Piolets: Plush
Theory of a Deadman: Not Meant To Be, Bad Girlfriend
Seven Mary Three: Cumbersome
Nickleback: How You Remind Me, If Today Was Your Last Day, Rockstar
Linkin Park: What I've Done, Bleed It Out, New Divide, Numb
Lifehouse: Hanging By A Moment
JET: Are You Gonna Be My Girl
Green Day: I love them, but alternative, sprint song "Nice Guys Finish Last"
Creed: My Sacrifice (greatest hits has a lot good heavy climb songs)
Buckcherry: warning-explict though, but great rock beat
Bad Company: Can't Get Enough (oldie but goodie)
BTO: Takin Care Of Business (oldie but goodie, fast beat)
The Offspring: Pretty Fly (more alt. rock, but nice guitar +more in my lib)

I am not normally a techno music person. However, I found Fatboy Slim w/a Lance climbing vid. The song is Acid 8000. It has a great driving beat for some pedaling focus without words. "If this don't make your booty move, your booty must be dead!". YouTube link w/song... it's hypnotic almost lol!

Hope he finds some tunes he likes!

I'm not an individual song type of person. If I don't like at least 3 songs by an artist, I don't listen to them.
I've posted this before - for some loud "war music" try this Celtic drum band

I like Playlist over Pandora or LastFM because when you type in 'Wicked Tinkers" you get Wicked Tinkers, not another band 'like' them.

The other two are good if you want to discover new music but you can do that in Playlist too, just look at other peoples playlists.

I like to work out to:

Disturbed
Godsmack
Breaking Benjamin
Three Days Grace

And similar.

A bit removed from classic rock (much closer to metal) :o But it definitely makes you want to hammer (well, at least it makes me want to). Lots of energy, lots of drums, but if you can't handle screaming not for you (they do however scream on pitch).

How about Clutch or Kings of Leon? I like to run to things like Rancid, Sublime, umm and now my mind is blank. :)

Answer

Phish
Dixie Chicks
Afro Celt Sound System

Question
Name 3 very different bands from 3 different genres.

I like Phish and Afro Celt Sound System, too.
I don't like the term "Chick" and I completely stopped listening to anything they did after the FUTK incident. Bad taste.

Not exactly "head-banging" music, but upbeat and good to work out to:

Gaelic Storm
Leahy
Fiddlers 3
Stone Soup Band (at least the songs I've heard)

GLC1968
10-12-2009, 05:24 PM
Shinedown
Days of the New (slightly older since they've gone separate ways)
Linkin Park

and a little different, not nearly as rock, but fun none-the-less:
Guster

He should look into
The Reverend Horton Heat
The Cramps
Hillbilly Hellcats-Rev it up with Taz album-and Hillbilly Love song
Georgia Satellites
Motorhead- Lost Johnny, Ace of Spades, Vibrator

If you all do the internet radio thing, KEXP 90.3FM Friday nights from 6 to 9, shake the shack hosted by Leon Berman.

Thx for these songs lists...I admit it feels like a whole tidal sound wave washed over me ..and I ducked under, untouched..not knowing many of these song names, groups.

My world when working out at home indoors, is tv ..or outside on bike...highly visual, tactile sensory and lost in bits of thoughts. :)

I dislike intensely earbuds/headsets, etc. (I get headaches) which explains my cluelessness on knowing more "current" music. :o

What gets me going lately:

-Queen's Greatest Hits (3 CD set) - includes some remakes on the third desk, some tributes. Check out hyped up version of Under Pressure with David Bowie. So many songs: Fat Bottomed Girls, Bicycle Race, Radio Gaga, We Will Rock You, We are the Champions, Bohemian Rhapsody, Hammer to Fall, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Killer Queen, Someone to Love, etc. Ready Freddie!
