Hi! I'm relatively new to clipless (I have them on my tandem, but haven't used them on a single bike before). I'm going with Crank Brothers, but wasn't sure if I was better off w/ a platform style (like the Candy) or the eggbeater style w/o the platform. On the one hand, I think the platforms are probably better for me to be able to pedal if I can't get in to the pedal, but on the other hand, I wonder if the eggbeater style is easier to get into because you don't have to worry about the platform.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I have had Candies and Quattros from Crank Bros and there have been a heap of times I have not clipped in and just used the platforms- usually on uneven surfaces, when I know I am going to stop very soon etc. I would go for the one with platforms to allow you to do this. The platforms don't get in the way of clipping in at all!

Thanks! Nice tandem by the way...it looks like our big red tandem.

I use both Candies and Eggbeaters. You will not notice the platform when clipping in as it rotates out of the way. I agree with Kiwi that the platform gives better stability when not clipped in.

The only disadvantage I've found to Candies is that the platform compresses snow into ice on the bottom of your foot. Mud shedding is the excellent for both pedals, but snow tends to compact so I'll switch to Eggbeaters if I think I'll have some snow banks to navigate. This probably isn't helpful as it sounds like you're using these with a road bike but just sharing . . . .

Thanks, our tandem's name is "Big Red". It's an 05 Trek T2000. Yay more tandem people!
