View Full Version : Does your bike have a name?

I just bought a new bike. I call my other bike "R.B.", short for Red Bike. I'm considering names for my new bike and wondered if other riders have named their bikes. (Or am I just crazy?) My bike is like a good friend. We'll spend lots of time together and I think it deserves a name!:)
Do you talk to your bike? (Or again, am I just crazy????):p

I do. :o ("Hello, dah-ling, would you like to go for a spin?") No name for my bike, though.

Does your bike have a name?
Which one? Ernie, Ashley, MaryKate, BabyBlue, or the others that just go by their model names?

There have been several threads on this and I think a slight majority of us name our bikes. I name all of mine:
Miranda- the feisty roadie
Tess- My hardtail mountain bike, she is a Scott Contessa but she is so tiny just Tess.
Fiona- since sold but she was my first road bike.
Holly Golightly - my new love is my full suspension mountain bike.
And yes I talk to my bikes when I need a little extra push. "Come on Holly, we can do this" or "you're right, Miranda, I am a wimp. Let's go!"
I name my cars too and DH's last two trucks but I don't talk to them.

A name? My bike has a song, My Sedona:
Oo my little pretty one, pretty one
When you gonna give me some time, Sedona?
Oo you make my motor run, my motor run
Gun it coming off of the line, Sedona
I think most people know only the My Sedona refrain, though.

I'm considering names for my new bike and wondered if other riders have named their bikes. (Or am I just crazy?)
Mine are:
Cougar (because he left a nasty claw scar on my leg)
Oxymoron (the extra small Giant)
Prez (bought him on election day)
"V" (the 5th bike I've bought + Wilier (W is pronounced V) + movie reference)
Do you talk to your bike? (Or again, am I just crazy????):p
Yes, but more the mountain bikes than the roadies.
My current road bike is called Cleo, but she's a Genius Cleo 105 so she was named when I got her and has her name painted on her frame:
http://www.geniusbikes.com/bikes.php?module=bikes&bikes_id=9
My first road bike was a red, black and silver Diamondback Interval. She was called Lola (as in Run Lola Run), because she was red and she went fast.
Most of our cars have had names as well. Our last car was an apricot VW Polo nicknamed Piglet. My husband rides an orange and black Peugeot scooter and he agonised for a long time over what to call it. He finally settled on Black Wolf (from Dr Who).

I have referred to my bike as a "she", but she hasn't had a name until I read this thread and a name suggested itself:
Bluewing, after the duck (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue-winged_Teal), since my bike is the teal Avail 3. My boyfriend and I also have an ongoing joke about birds, and he's my riding buddy if I want one. It just fits.
I'm trying to think of a name for the Cannondale CAAD9 I keep drooling over. Guess it means it's meant, right? :D :o

My old 3-speed beach cruiser was "Edith" and my road bike is "Lexi". I named her Lexi because that sounds like a fast, sleek, beautiful, sophisticated name.
It helps with work excuses too. "Sorry I couldn't make it in for the first part of the meeting. Lexi needed a little extra attention this morning." When you say something like that, people won't say "Who's Lexi?" because they think they're supposed to know and they walk off scratching their heads. I can hear their thoughts "I know she doesn't have a small child. Does she? No - but she doesn't have grandchildren, either. Her niece? Whatever."

I call my main road bike "Black Beauty" and all three bikes are sometimes referred to as "she."
I DO talk to my bikes! I frequently praise Black Beauty and if I have neglected her as I see her sitting in the basement waiting I promise her that we will go out soon. If I take a different bike out I may tell BB "Don't worry, you're still no. 1 and I'll take you next time."
Ok, I am crazy.

My bike was purchased used, an old Cannondale...and the prior owner had blacked out some of her logo letters and named her "Can o' ale". She was kidn of a workhorse, mis-treated and unappreciated.
When I changed gearshifters out and cleaned her up the Cannondale reappeared...and I thought she might want a new name...but I haven't found a good one just yet.

I started out calling my bike Pinky, then she just sort of became Baby. But then I somehow switched back to Pinky. Probably partially because my riding buddy calls her bike Baby. But Pinky is much more fitting, anyway, cause I'm SUCH the pink person, at least where cycling is concerned. I inspired my club to get pink jerseys even! :D Go Team Pink!!!

I've posted this before, but I've tried to name all my bikes but none of them ever stuck. Same with my cars, actually.
My bikes go by their model (Isis is my road bike because she's a Terry Isis) or their use (the commuter). This has been true of every bike I've ever owned even though I always have grand plans to give them exotic or fitting names. Go figure.

I have a Cannondale Synapse that is black, with purple and pink. My neighbor named it Pur-Pee.
I have a Specialized Expedition that if I were to call it anything, it would be the parts bike -- DH robs it to keep his going! It doesn't get out much. Too spongey. I hate how it sucks the energy out of a ride. Can't see how DH can enjoy his!
I have a Specialized Roubaix that my grandson named -- it's my Speed Queen Bike. Much better ride than the Expedition!
Then there's my old Trek 720 (late '80s maybe?) that I dug out of the shed to make into a "grocery bike" -- it's my "little blue bike." I'm not sure why it's the "little" one -- it's bigger than the Speed Queen. It's a fun little bike, and really likes to go, even when the brakes are sticky! (I really like this one, and have been putting money into it rather than buying a newer bike for grocerying, which probably would have been a cheaper choice! Shhh, don't tell DH!)

I did. I have a Rodriguez Stellar, midnight purple, bought used. Her name is Betty. Don't know why, but that's the name that came to me when I first saw her. And yes, I talk to her. :)

No. I'm afraid it's just not in my genetic makeup. The commuter is known as "the Bianchi" and my road bike is either "the Scott" or "my road bike." BF's bike is "your bike."

I named my Serotta "FlyGirl", or actually my son named her when I found my "mojo" a plastic fly and came home from a long ride. My son who is a jazz musican decided that the plastic fly would become attached to my headset so he zip-tied it on and named her "FlyGirl". Guess "fly" means cool, fast, breezy in jazz speak. So she's my girl!
I haven't named my Townie it's a Giant Suede and so far nothing has come to me but it will someday I'm sure. I love riding that bike it's so comfy.
My first bike I named Sadie and had a plastic cow horn on her, she was black and had white lettering.......mooo!:p

So, my new roadie this year is a pink and white Orbea Onix Dama... she reminds me of that pink and white swirled cotton candy you get at the 4H fair...
Thus, her name is: Candy.:) She's fun to ride and sweet!

I'm not usually one for naming inanimate objects, but I did name the bikes. The most recent bike is called The Beast. It's a Cannondale Synapse 4, and I love it to bits. It's fast, and grunty, and makes me look like I'm a much better rider than I am.
The bike it's replaced has been put out to pasture, but is still very loved. I call it The Noble Steed. It's a flatbar roadie (Apollo Fiamme) and weighs about a million kilos, but I love it. The Beast is currently at the LBS for some TLC, so The Noble Steed has been cleaned up, lubed and had its tyres pumped for tomorrow morning's ride :)

I have 5 bikes..not all named though. The 1972 cherry red Schwinn Suburban, refurbished and outfitted with snazzy Cherry blossom panniers, bell, and moped mirror is 'Madame Ovary', in honour of my own shrinking ovaries. The Trek 8000 was affectionatly named The Blue Ba$tard, a tribute to the Ex who gave her to me. My powder blue beach crusier is 'Crusier', and my road bike, a Felt f55 is 'My bike'; I can't quite determine it's assigned gender yet.

I don't usually use names; my cats probably think their names are "cat" and "other cat" (interchangeable, depending on number of cats in sight and which I see first).
My commuter is a 2005 Bianchi Castro Valley... it takes much to long to explain that it is a Volpe cx frame built up and sold as a commuter, so I've actually started thinking of it as the Volpe (if I get S&S couplers put in I will actually "rebrand" it as a Volpe, I think). It was my first and only bike for a long time, so it really didn't need anything other than "my bike." Now its name is "my workhorse" if anything. Gender neutral or male.
As a contrast to "my workhorse," I started thinking of my 1998 Bianchi Eros as a gazelle. This is close to my cousin's online handle Giselle, so that just slid into place. Sorry coz for stealing your "name," and sorry Eros for giving you a French name!

Demonstrating my distinct lack of imagination, my bikes have rather dull names though perhaps the fact that they each have two names offsets that?
"Hybrid" aka "first"
"Road" aka "second"
After I crashed on the road bike soon after getting it, some of my friends took to calling it "killer." I don't think that counts though.

I've never had much luck coming up with bike names - although I've tried. I have enough trouble naming pets.
When I talk to my road bike in my head...... what? Doesn't everyone do that? I think of her (to her?) as Bikey-Poo. She hates that. I can't help it - it just slips out. Then I apologize (still in my head). I need to come up with something better.
My mountain bike, well, I'm considering Crusher, or Killer, or maybe Charlie (Manson). He broke my ankle last summer, and last week he dumped me off on a pile of big, sharp mine rock. Bruises and scrapes, including on my ankle bone, right on top of the metal plate, plus a nice cut across my wrist that makes me realize that it IS trying to kill me, and trying to make it look like suicide.

I named my Specialized Vita Comp "Bella".
"Vita" is Italian for "life" , therefore, "Bella Vita" means "Beautiful Life".

I named my Apollo Etienne hybrid Josie after the comedienne Josie Long. I don't find her funny at all but the bike is long and I struggle to get it up the 5 steps into my flat  I do love her though :D

My Trek 7.6 is named Stella
My Trek Pure Sport is named Stella as well. Tho mine is named after a beer.. Stella Artois.. there was an "incident" at pizza place here and a rather wacky waiter upon ordering a beer yelled out to the entire buzzing restaurant.. STEEELLLAAAA (Street Car Named Desire) and made me feel like crawling under the table. Now my friends all giggle when I dare order a beer- we laugh (I can laugh about it now) and mock screaming it again.
The Trek FX 7.3 is named Louisville as we drove from Cincinnati to Louisville to pick her up and give her a good new home.

My red Felt F75 is:
'The Big Red Beast' (because it gets me into the right mindset for my training/racing when I get on a bike called 'the beast'. :)
'The Beast' (because same as above but sometimes I'm in a hurry)
'The BRB' (because...Big Red Beast/Big Red Bike, and later added the "Be Right Back' because I have a habit of saying 'Be right back' before a planned short ride and then coming back hours later because I was having too much fun.

How have I not posted in this thread, yet? My bike is Oberon (after my favorite beer), but we call her 'Oby', for short.
I'm already looking to upgrade to a speedier, higher-end Cannondale, the new SuperSix 4 Rival. DH was down at our LBS tonite picking up the roof rack for our tandem and mentioned to our shop guy that I had the new bike bug really bad and would likely be ordering another bike in then next few months. Our shop guy said we have to name the new bike "Oby 2 Kenobi." Can't argue with that.

I don't think I have posted my tri bike's name (scott plasma contessa). I did post pictures of her back in July before my Ironman. We went to the race, had a great day, and still no name.
I finally named her Pepper. Pepper is Ironman's assistant, and she was my assistant in my Ironman, thus the name. And she is pretty spunky too!

I don't usually name my bikes, but I have been calling my Specialized Tricross Siena. She's named after a province in the Tuscany region of Italy, and I plan to take her there for a ride when I finish my Ph.D. :)

My road bike is "Buffy" named for my favorite kick-*** female character, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I've been guilty of yelling at her when she flats or drops a chain. I've also apologized to her when I went 6 days without riding her.
My steelie commuter is "Red"...she's red. My mountain bike doesn't have a name--I guess I'm just not that attached to it.

Ruby Elite Apex and her name is Phoebe... not sure why. It simply suits her:)

My red bike is Puddin', and my white bike is Jessica Rabbit, but she doesn't answer to that. I tried changing it to Arrow, but that didn't stick, either. She usually just gets called "my white Eddy". She seems to like the idea of being called Spike, but she gets a lot of flats, and I'm not sure I want to encourage that.

I have been known to call my Bob Jackson steel road bike "Bob". Its name is written in several places on the bike, so I cannot quite picture changing it.
We have been close enough in the past that first names were appropriate, but it has been a while. So i may be referring to it as "Jackson" until we spend some more time together.
I have also been known to call it "the blue bike", to distinguish it from my green/purple fade Trek hybrid, which doesn't seem to have a real name.

After the rides I had this week I might call my bike "Dog Racer". I've been chased by 3 dogs in the past 2 days!

Love the topic!
I never named my bikes until Sky came into my life 3 years ago. She is a Rivendell Bleriot, the color of the sky. Quite ironic as my nickname is Sky King.
I also have an Orange Sam Hillborne frame I am contemplating a new build. He is a 52 cm but the stretch with Nitto Dirt Drops is just a snare to long for me so am thinking of moustache or albatross bars and using him more for local riding, not touring. As I live in Boise, home of the BSU broncos with school colors of orange and blue, he immediately took on the name Bronco.

I've been contemplating a name for my Madone I purchased the end of last year...The only thing coming to mind was Madonna, but I am not a Madonna fan. I think I'm going to settle on Mona Lisa because Mona is short for Madonna, I guess I could call her Lisa for short. Who know's if I will actually use the name but at least she has one now :)

Update:
Stella the Trek Pure cruiser bike has found a new home, but a Mountain Bike has take her place in the stable... A Trek xCal hard tail 29er named Guinevere.
Still have Louisville the Trek FX hybrid who recently got decked out with cool black fenders for rainy days. My Specialized Ruby Elite is named "Ruby" as I couldn't think of a name for her... She is all pretty and shines like a fine jewel, so Ruby was pretty fitting.

After my favorite bike, my Gary Fisher Hifi lovingly called Holly Golightly was damaged in a car wreck I got my Specialized Epic. She has a lime green/black/white frame that I have accented with purple accessories. My mom referred to her as a Mardi Gras bike but after riding the 29er a few times I have decided she is definitely a high Voodoo Priestess, so I have named her Marie Laveau. :D
And after my husband has wrecked the last two trucks I named (the only vehicles of his I named) I have told him the replacement will not have a name! But my car is still Gretchen.

I am new to riding but the naming of bikes started immediately and with a theme.
My first and current bike (A raleigh venture 3.0) is named Sally Sparrow.
I'm eyeing replacing it with a specialized vita elite and would name it Rose.
I looked at a Cannondale Quick 3 and would have named it Donna.
And the Trek 7.2... yup, Martha.
So its all the women of Doctor Who.

The name I tried to give my bike never stuck. So she's mostly just "Bike", Miss Princess Road Bike, or occasionally "Her Royal Highness, the Princess of Trails", since she's a bit of a brat, stubborn (I try to take her out for rides, and something goes wrong), occasionally thinks she's a cross bike, and most of our miles are done on the local rail-trail. We never really bonded.:o
I'd probably manage to name a bike I clicked with, though.
DBF's bike is Bikington (I named him).

It took me a while of searching to find the right name after I bought my bike in March.
I have a Specialized Ruby, that is a deep blue, with a matte finish. So she could have been Sapphire- but I kept looking. Eventually, I was looking at pictures of wildflowers and found a flower called Speedwell! The scientific name is Veronica, so her name is Veronica Speedwell- Ms. Speedy or Very Speedy for short. (Actually, as a team, we're not that speedy, but that's not her fault. She's definitely faster than her predecessor, the Fuji).

My Klein is a beautiful blue silver paint, the kind of paint job only Klein was able to do. When a friend saw her the first time he said "shiny!" and then started singing REM's shinning happy people so I have always called her Shiny.
My utopia is Flower Power because of the orange flower stickers I put on her.

I bought a "Robin's Egg Blue" Surly Cross Check that I'm waiting on. Not sure what the name will be. My Trek FX 7.3 is Scout from To Kill A Mockingbird. The Cross Check is sturdy, utilitarian, quirky, and pretty ...like a Bulldog. So I'm thinking the name needs to represent the quirky/solidness, but sound "sexy" to compensate. lol
Ideas?

I have a bike of many different parts. And right now it has mis-matching tires. So i've thought of calling it "Ragamuffin" but that's a little long. I usually just call it "bikey bike". Which isn't much shorter, i guess. But kind of follows calling my boyfriend's car "Jeepy Jeep". Not very creative.

I just started cycling again after a break of many years. My bike is dark purple cannondale aluminum frame with some components that are probably about 20 years old. Yes, I even have down tube shifters.
It's name is Professor Plum :D

for the bike of many parts, mongerel, pot pourri, mixmatched, heinz 57, scrappie and bits (as in bits and bobs or bits and pieces) spring to mind.
My Trek pilot the one and only bike I own started out as blue bike which got shortened to BB which got lengthened to BeBe because I had a huge blue stuffed bunny in my younger years that was referred to as BB and I thought BeBe (pronounced a la francais as BeyBey)was a little leaner, meaner and more fun.

My Orbea is so gorgeous she has to be female. Yes, I talk to her...usually when I'm feeling guilty because she's been leaning against the wall for a week and I'm promising we'll ride soon. I call her Charlie. It came to me after a fall mid-ride. I had some pretty bad scrapes and blood running down my leg for about 30 miles and I kept thinking "That hurt, Charlie...and it still hurts" (in a British accent).

My gorgeous mid 80s, handbuilt, 531 tubed tourer is called Lady Haydock.
She's a real refined ride in comparison to anything I've ever owned and she was built (for the lady I bought her from) by Roger Haydock (here in Accrington, UK).
FunSize...a friend has a bike made up of various parts and it's called Frankenbike :D

I call "her" Ruby. It is a Ruby Elite. Guess I wasn't original. Funny thing is I picked Rubysoho as my board name loooooong before I actually bought (or even knew about) my Ruby. Seems it worked out nicely. :D

My Kona's name is "Bucky"
Why? Because I was re-reading one of my favorite childhood books, Watership Down, when I got him and the name of one of the characters, Buckthorn, just kind of stuck.

On my way to pick up the Surly we ate a late lunch/early dinner, which I commented about. My DH asked, "So did we just eat 'dunch' or 'linner'?" (changing the first letters of the words "lunch" & "dinner". I responded "linner" which then got morphed into "Leonard" by DH. So now the inside joke is that my bike's name is "Leonard"!
