I visited my neighbor yesterday and their giant English mastiff chomped me right in the gluteus maximus. I have a bruise and teeth marks 6" across my left cheek. I was not even wearing jeans- I had on running shorts.

There is no way I can run for a while- and I was going to do a short duathlon this weekend to warm up for my first tri on the 27th. I find this mildly humorous.

Any way, just goes to show you can train all you want but sometimes things unexpected happen. I think I'll be okay for my tri- just not getting in that last week of 5k training. Oh well, I have another one in November. I'll just stay away from humongous dogs.

I would post a picture but it is a little inappropriate.

Oh well, it makes for great story telling! :D

Did you get it checked out, medically speaking?

And what was up with that mastiff ?!?

My experience with butt bruises has been that they heal fast. Hopefully you will too.

Well, at least you can work on the swim portion...the only bright side..

Hope it heals for you soon...that is such a silly random thing to have happen!

At least you got bit by a regular sized dog...I was bit on the butt by a miniature dachshund. He was a high jumper.

Ouch!!! Hope you heal quick. Last time a dog bit me right on a muscle, I had a small but deep area that took forever to heal.

And really, if professional racers can post their *ss hematomas (http://twitpic.com/gs69h), I wouldn't find it inappropriate. Not that you need to post yours or anything. :p

Seriously! The worst damage my mastiff every inflicted was a bad case of slobber.

Yikes!! This is one of the bazillion reasons why I am afraid of dogs.

Oh man. That's crazy! It will make a good story, though. ;) Race reports don't usually include "after I got bit on my butt by that dog..."

You should be fine... just take it easy!

Ha hah- Although I would not call him a "regular sized dog." He probably outweighs me by 40 pounds. And what's up with him? His buddy started barking and he snuck in from behind. I love my neighbors but I won't be over there again.

If the dog broke your skin, you need to see a doctor. Those are puncture wounds and can easily get infected.

A MASTIFF? wow... That's one big dog. Has he bit anyone before? Imagine if he did that to a child....

Anyway, I hope you are doing better. I'd stay away from him, too, since he now has a "taste" for you.

Ouch...that dog sounds like a real pain in the butt! Has he ever bitten anyone before? I don't think I'd want to go to that house again either, unless the dog is confined. I love dogs, but I wouldn't want to hang around ones that bite!

I don't blame you for not going over there again. It would be good to make a report on the dog, but probably you don't want bad neighbor relations. Many adult's butts are about face level for a child- had it been a child it could have been bitten in the face. They need some kind of warning before something like that happens.

This is why I stay away from dogs. I know there are a lot of animal lovers here, but, most animals scare me to death.

I had a great bull mastiff and he intimidated most ( he was a rescue... now i have a st. bernard!). I am not afraid of dogs but some you have to show authority to right off the bat because if they sense on little bit of fear they are more likely to bite.
My dog never bit anyone but the teenagers on the 4-wheeler came close. You don't terrorize a dog bigger then you are!!

In all seriousness, my parents were coming for a visit and my mom is very afraid of big dogs due to a bite on her *ss also. My mom and my dog became best buds but I had to introduce them and make sure things were ok. Once my mom wasn't afraid anymore.

I hope you feel better.

I love dogs, i have dogs myself and i love them to peaces. But i NEVER trust a dog that isn't mine.

Hahahaha. It's like when I fell on my left hip two years ago. The worst part about the hematoma was that under clothes, it looked EXACTLY like an extra large saddlebag.

Well I did go to the Doctor and she smiled through the whole appointment, like, I can't believe you got bit in the *ss. She is required to make a report to animal contral so I am off the hook. I ran on tuesday- hurt like the dickens for the first 1/4 mile but then I forgot about it.I ran my first 5k all the way through without walking. Race on Sunday!

Good luck on the race! Hopefully by now you've healed to the point where moving around will help...

Sorry to hear about your injury and hope your event will go / has gone well!

My recent crash on my century was dog related. I have been dog bit more than once in my life. Including on my bici where a German Sheppard chased me and bit my ankle.

The reason I highlighted the "before" word in this post... that is what the owners of these dogs say after the incident...

"well, my dog never bit anyone **before**?".

Oh really... well... THERE IS ALWAYS A FIRST TIME!!!:mad:

I love animals and dogs (&own one). But, the people that own them can be total idiots.

Dogs are creatures that descend from Mother Nature's wild. Domesticated and tamed by mankind. HOWEVER... still deep in their blood, they are from the wild. Which we all know that Mother Nature can sometimes be very surprising and unpredictable.

Hope you are healed well.

EDIT: Btw, no offense:) of any kind intended to Jolt that posted this comment... total valid to ask history, my century dog crash, the owners KNEW the dog had a bad habit history, and did nothing about it... I was just wanted to make a point about owner's niave assumptions. Even one of my very well trained dogs almost bit a delivery man once... she was protecting my children inside my house--I never would have thought such a gentle giant would have that in her... but, not shocked... because she was from "the wild".

Wow. Bit on the *ss by a sneaky mastiff. That's not something you hear about every day.

Glad you're OK!

I don't know whether to giggle or frown. I'm sorry for your bum troubles :( I hope you heal soon!

We've had two Old English Mastiffs and they've both been big sweet, goofy love-bugs but newest one definitely came with a little biting problem we had to train out of her. Good thing your doc had to report it and that got you off the hook. It sucks but it really should be done.
