I went to a bike show earlier this year and they had a booth with bikers on those 'roller-trainers' (don't know if I am using the right terms) in front of a screen which displayed a cycling scene that they were following. How does this work? Is it a DVD of a film that was shot (essentially filming a bike route) or is it like a video game that is interactive? My husband is interested in this and it may end up being a Christmas gift this year.

It sounds like it might be one of the Spinervals dvds.

Most of their dvds are filmed inside, but there was a thread on here last year about some of their outdoor training dvds. If you search on "spinervals" you should find it. I think one of them was filmed at Lake Placid.

Also:

Endurance Films - RIDES (http://www.endurancefilms.com/store/catalog/Rides-Series-orderby0-p-1-c-264.html)

Global Ride (http://www.globalride.net/dvds.htm) -- I'm interested in getting the Hawaii rides, since they have the same courses with different coaching and training options.

Real Rides (http://www.realrides.ca/)

There is also at least one system with a fluid trainer, where you connect online through your PC (not mac compatible) and can train on courses by yourself, or race against / train with other people. Your actual output in watts on the fluid trainer drives you on the course. I think this is over 1k, though.
