I'll set up another 8 week spreadsheet. So anyone interested in joining in, just post here and let me know your:

** weight on Friday the 11th (though I'm totally flexible, whatever day works best for you to weigh in, don't worry about it, just weigh in when you want to around Fridays).
** goal weight for 8 weeks from this Friday (which actually takes us to the second of November). And if it would work best for you to just work on losing but not have an 8-week goal weight, no problemo! :)

I'm in, I will post my goal weight on Friday. Thank you Possegal, with out your tireless chart keeping I'm sure I would be much heavier.

I'll have to weigh in now, and some odd day next week, as I'll be out of town for a couple weeks, minus a couple days!

I'm at (gulp) 169.2. YIKE... I was doing so well till a couple months ago!

Goal after 8 weeks: 156.
This is good -- I've been doing more walking than anything, and I just cannot lose weight walking (obviously, I can GAIN though!).
The 3-Day Breast Cancer walk is this coming weekend (YIPPEE!), and after that I can get back into a routine of workouts that really do get my intensity up. This will be excellent incentive to check in here each week!

THANKS POSSEGAL for doing this stuff!

Definitely in!
I lost a whooping 1.8 pounds. I guess better than gaining.
Nov. 2nd is the offically start to my marathon training. I really want to be at a much lower weight. So these next 8 weeks I need to be very serious. Now I just had a holiday weekend (drinking); have short family related vaca next week (eating & drinking)--but cooler weather and hills to run and lastly in Oct. 2 week vaca w/ 1 week a "bike vacation" = lots of eating/drinking!
LOL...and I want to lose weight!

So I'll weigh in Th or Fri and goal...under 115? Do-able? Hm that is about 7 - 8 pounds. Better hit the ground running today!

Thanks Possegal for keeping us going!:)

coun't me in again too. I'll weigh in on Friday and report back with goal weight then. At a conference most of the week. I hope that doesn't put my starting weight too high! At least there's free access to the pool here so I can go for a swim each morning, and I'm trying to resist the treats at coffee breaks.

In as always. 125 goal for me again.

I just hired a coach to work with me on a training plan for November 2009 through June 2010, when I will compete in my 1st half-ironman. One of the things we are going to work on is to dial in my nutrition a little more. While my current weight is very healthy and well inside of normal for my height and body type, I want to change the composition of my body. Add to muscle mass and lose some more fat mass. Overall, that ought to take me down a few more net pounds over time.

This challenge will (hopefully) help keep me more accountable to that goal.

Count me in, too. My goal weight is 158.0

I've actually taken the last two weeks off from my weight training and logging my food and I've managed to keep my weight the same (Yay!). I'm getting back on the active effort bandwagon this week, so I'm hoping for more progress once again.

My final goal is 135 - by next March (or thereabouts). :)

Hi
I'd like to join in - I am starting at 131 and would like to be 126 or below by the end of the 8 weeks. I'm doing Weightwatchers online, and was at 136-137 at the beginning of July. The cycling helped move me off a 7 week plateau, and I hope it keeps working. (Eventual goal: 120)

Thanks!

My starting weight is 241.8 and my goal weight is 230. I am on a new eating plan to try and reduce the inflammation I have in my body and if all goes like planned (and I stick to it...because its very strict the first 28 days at least) I should lose quite a bit.

I had a good first last saturday! I road just over 45 miles!

How this works:

People let me know if they want to play along
Once a week people post their weights - I list Friday as the weigh in day, but some folks have a Weight Watchers weigh in or just have a day they prefer to weigh, so no biggie, just weigh in Friday or someday around it
At the start of the challenge most folks also give me a goal weight for the 8-week period. Some find that having a goal and not making it sets them back and would rather just try and lose without a written goal. That is also totally fine. The point of this is to help folks, so whatever helps you all, is just fine by me!
I put the info in a spreadsheet that I will post a link to. As it is still in the sing-up phase, I find it easier to wait until the first official weigh-in to post it. Then I try and post at least once a page in the thread with the links, to make it easier for folks to find it.

Any more questions, just ask! And welcome to any and all new folks!

Here is the sheet. First link may require a sign-in but the second one should not. Let me know if there are any glitches. Left a lot of blank lines in there where folks from last go around would have been listed. I'll clean that up in another week or so, just giving folks time to jump back on in before I do that. :)

In the interest of full-disclosure, I too have wanted to lie when my start weight for one 8-week period is higher than the end weight from the previous 8-weeks period. :) Glad I'm not alone. But then I also thought - don't want to cheat myself out of a good result in this period, so tell the truth. :)

I started last week at 238 even, but today I'm at 238.8

I joined the Y for swimming and weight training (and they've got a Jacuzzi and a sauna!), and I've gone back to kickboxing two nights a week in addition to the long rides. Last week I got in 100 miles, but this week, nada so far.

Tomorrow's my big 45th birthday ride. My goal there is 45 miles.

D*H bought me some new handle covers that have this wide spot for more support (I've got carpal tunnel and both my hands have been going numb). He also taped up the extender bars on the ends of the handlebars with some cushy gel tape. He also gave me a Halo sweat band head cover, some Chamois Butt'r, and a container of GU Brew for electrolyte replenishing.

Hi, I'm new here. Lurked for a little while. I'll post an official introduction later. I'm just excited to join this 8 week challenge. I need to commit to something or I'll never really work at it. I'm at 136 and my goal is 127 in 8 weeks. I've been riding for a few months and gained 2 lbs, ugh! I also am on week 5 of the couch to 5k program. Riding muscles are not very helpful for running. I can ride for 30 miles fairly easily now, but I can't run a mile yet. I'm close! I know I can do this, I just need to eat less. That's the really hard part for me.

Thanks for adding me,
Jen

129.

On Monday morning, after my loooooong 187 mile ride in the heat on Saturday, the scale read 135. I *knew* it was water-retention (I was 129 on Satuday morning before the ride started), but nonetheless I mentally hate to see the scale say such a thing! But, as expected, I'm back to normal now that several days have gone by. Funny how we let things like that mess with our heads.

I lost .4lbs but feel I must have gained some muscle because everything is fitting a little less tight now! My ending weight is 241.4.

I really feel like I worked hard this week and am glad for any loss I get. I worked out for almost 10 hours this week (over 5 days). I worked out with my trainer monday, spin class tues, wed off, water aerobics thurs, off friday, 20 mile cycling trip sat and 54 mile cycling trip yesterday.
I am going to try to just stay on an even level over the next several weeks because I have set the bar pretty high for myself! A couple of weeks ago I road my first 45 mile bike ride, I did 54 this weekend, plan to do 65 next saturday and on Oct 10th I am going to shoot for a centry! All 100 miles of it!

Missed last week's weigh in due to out of town trip for family celebration.
Although I DID run 3 days... teh amount and type of food was --well not good. And let's not talk about the wine consumption! But teh trip was fun.
1st day post vacation/trip was up to 126 (OMG!).

Today after a couple of sucessful eating days I am back to 123.2

Still not really moving in the right direction...but I need to stay very serious! I have about 2 weeks til "real" vacation. Although it is a bike vacation--you know how the eating is on these! Wish me luck! (or is that will power and dedication!)

Since this is the weight loss thread, I'd love to share today's discovery 8')

Since January 7th of 2009 (not steadily I should say, but still)

I've lost
4" off my waist
1" off my upper arm
3.5" off my hips
3" off my chest (for some reason I am happy about this
1" off my thigh

And 11 lbs (although I've gained a lot of muscle too!)

Proof is in the fit of my clothes :D

Reesha - Wow, those are great measurement improvements!! It just goes to show that the scale number is not the important figure. You've clearly made big improvements without a lot of change in your actual weight. I can "hear" the excitement in your words!!

I'm just back from my trip. 3 days in Las Vegas for a cycling convention (I tried very hard to eat healthily. I did go astray on the alcohol front one evening at an indutry party, though...:o ) Then we went to the Grand Canyon for 3 days. We camped, and brought along most of our food, so I didn't go too far astray there, though I did indulge in a yummy ice cream bar after an 8 mile hike with 2500+ feet of elevation gain.

I expected to be up because, despite my efforts, I spent way too much time in restaurants (especially in Vegas) and airports to really be able to control my meals properly. But this morning I got on the scale and the news was good. :) I'll report in "officially" on Friday as usual.

It's REALLY good to be home. I like travelling, but I don't like stressing over my meals. It's so comforting to make myself a simple bowl of 7 grain cereal and half a grapefruit for breakfast. Is it weird to think that way??

How do you journal your cycling? I have read through different threads here, but it really didn't answer it for me. 30 miles drafting in a group is different from 30 miles alone is different from 30 miles in a tri while racing. How do you do that?

I guesstimate it. Basically, when you choose an activity, you also have to choose an intensity. I usually think about the course, how much climbing there was versus flat, and try to be honest about my level of effort.

If I do a 2 hour ride that involved a half hour of climbing, I'll probably put down the half hour of climbing at high intensity, an hour of moderate, and the last half hour (which involves the descending portion) at low. Seems to work for me.

azfiddle
10-08-2009, 11:15 AM
That's pretty much how I do it- guess how much is low, moderate or high. I just got the hand-me-down heart rate monitor from my dh when he upgraded. It tells me how many calories I've burned. 100 calories = 1 activity point. I never actually use any of my activity points, but I do use up at least half of the weekly points now that I am cycling. It makes me feel happy to see all those unused activity points accumulating though!

I also found a site where you can calculate the calories if you want to check it out:

The diet and exercise thing is finally kicking in to rev up my metabolism, I think, and my doctor put me on Metformin, a drug that helps regulate insulin efficiency, I think, in diabetics, but for me it's treatment for suspected polycystic ovarian syndrome/disease. I also had to get back on my high blood pressure meds last week because my numbers were creeping back up into the danger zone. I think the meds are working together with the diet (Lose it! I made my weight watchers goal of 130 in May. I ate on maintenance for most of the past 5 months. I recently lowered my goal to 125, but truthfully, I'm still eating in maintenance mode.

This image is my weightloss chart from November through this past wednesday. What is most fascinating to me is to see the obvious monthly pattern in the chart. There's a clear 4 week cycle of highs and lows. If you look carefully at the part of the chart where I was losing, you can even see that 4 week cycle at work there too - distinct dips every 4-5 weeks.

Anyway, whenever I'm in an "up" week, I get a little bummed out, but seeing this chart makes me realize that it's perfectly normal to fluctuate a bit. I know I am not losing and gaining the same 2-3 pounds over and over. It's just water and the natural cycle of life. I feel pretty good about the fact that I've figured out how to maintain this healthy weight I'm at.

One of these days I'll buckle down and really work on the last 5 pounds. :)

Wow, Susan, that's a great chart. What a wonderful way to graph your progress. It's so encouraging, too. I've been looking at at old spreadsheets and I've been in the 245 range since I joined this last March. I've only made this big drop since I started really writing down everything I eat (I've always said I eat really well, and I've discovered that I do, I just eat a lot) and joining the Y to vary my exercise routine was really a good idea, too, and being able to narrow down the possible medical causes behind my weight gain and medicate them, that's helped, too.

I know I still have to work on the diet and exercise.

168.9 for me this week. Finally moving back down again.

This past week, I've been monitoring my calorie burn with this: http://www.gowearfit.com/ and I've been logging my foods but not actively trying to cut back. My goal was to get in a full week of 'normal' so that I'd have a baseline with which to compare going forward. Of course, the sheer act of recording everything I ate is keeping me a little bit in check even without trying. So now I'm back down to where I was when the last challenge ended (just about). I've been really good about my exercise this past week and I plan to keep that up. BUT, I'll be cutting back a little on my intake and hopefully I'll be able to make some real progress. I do feel like I am learning a TON about my metabolism...so I'm excited.

Nothing like a good geeky electronic tool to get me motivated again! ;)

Just a reminder to let me know if there are any issues with seeing the chart. And remember if you can't see from the first link, you definitely should be able to from the second. Not sure if google ever worked out the problem where folks were still not being able to see it even if they were logged in. I should probably just start putting the second link in, rather than confuse things any more. :) I may start to do that. Let me know if that causes any problems for anyone.

Didn't weigh in last week. We were at a wedding from Friday early AM to Sunday. DD was the flower girl :) And with the tree taking out our power early last week and being displaced from our home, I've been eating a lot of junk! Hopefully didn't do too much damage to the progress I made.

Back on track this week!

Weird, I am sure I put it in there. Though sometimes I think I maneuver away from the site while still on that square and I think you then lose the change. Well, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. :)

I put in your Friday weight, unless you want the today one. Though both of them are outstanding - congrats!!

Sorry I have been out of commission lately. Thankfully not the seasonal or swine flu which has decimated our school population (I teach). I have been holding at 140 lbs. I did see an endocrinologist about my diabetes and we have agreed on 135 or less as optimum weight. So, I guess I'll try to reach this point.
Thanks for always putting together the list!

Holding steady at 148.6. I have noticed some significant body changes this week though. I didn't do before measurements when I started working out but I've definitely lost inches around my hips/waist. I'll have to try on some pants that used to be really tight on me when I get home and see how they fit :).

So, no weight movement, but definitely have firmed up all over and added muscle so I'm happy.

232.2 today - this weekly recording really helps me see the weight pattern fluctuations, the ebbs and flows of it. I can see the results of going off my blood pressure meds - a nearly-ten pound gain in a week - and the results of getting back on them - a six pound drop almost immediately, and now I'm back to the gradual decline that is healthier, no doubt, for my heart. I'd really like to get off the meds eventually. I thought I'd reached that point, but when the full weaning happened, my blood pressure started creeping back up and the weight came right back on. I don't understand the biomechanics of that. It's water weight, I know. The night I went back on the full dosage I literally lost four pounds (I was up and down all night going to the bathroom). It's been more gradual since then, thank goodness, but still effective.

Woohoo!

Good morning everyone.
My weight today: 127.4 - only 1.4 away from my mini-goal. I am very happy to be using a digital scale with increments of .2 pounds for weeks when there is more variation. Lately though, it's been a slow and steady "down". (There was a big ice cream cone during the ride yesterday, but it's been accounted for.

I weigh in for weightwatchers on Monday and again for this challenge on Friday. It really has been keeping me focused but also makes me a little obsessive twice a week instead of just once. The bigger challenge will be maintaining my loss when time constraints and/or weather cut back on my ability to keep up my current level of activity.

Thanks to you all for sharing this and I hope everyone has a successful week.

moving in the right direction: 129.0 today.

somewhat off-topic, I took my cats into the vet this week for their checkup, and both my older cats have lost weight and are now lean, mean purring machines. Getting them a kitten really upped their activity levels-- and increased the competition at the food bowl too! So I've got a leaner, fitter household all around...

I was going to post that I didn't weigh this morning, but I did. I also am about to post in the 'what did you eat today' thread that I ate almost an entire large pizza by myself last night. My first binge in years. :o I think I was punishing myself for something but I haven't quite figured it out yet.

Anyway, I'm up today. 170.9. Two pounds exactly. And two days ago I was thinking that I was feeling slimmer and that I'd probably see a drop this week.

If only I knew! I tend to sabotage myself as I get closer to my goal but doing it when I've barely started my new program is just weird. I do hope to figure it out though because it was too painful to let it happen again! :p

I just keyed it all in and I do feel better about it. My weight gain is obviously related to water (something that always happens after I eat pizza even if it's just one slice), and seeing the numbers in black and white has made me relax a bit. I was over my daily burn by 1300 calories yesterday. That's not even a half pound's worth. Certainly not enough of a reason to 'throw in the towel' as I've done in the past. I probably erased my entire weekly deficit (it wasn't a very good week exercise-wise either), but I certainly didn't eat enough to gain real weight this week.

Ok, I feel better. Putting it past me now. Moving on...

171.0 moving in the wrong direction. 8 years ago when I quit smoking my weight shot up, since then I have lost weight right to this 170-172 and can not seem to cross over into the 160's. To prove this to myself I ate cake for dinner last night and after weighing in today I had Chipoltle for lunch: the entire chicken burrito, chips, guacamole and a margarita.
I'm now thinking of doing something really strict: a cleanse, sllimfast, the cookie diet. I don't know which yet or even if yet but I have to, have to get over this hump.

Time for a new goal. It's just so easy to get complacent and slack off, but today I swam 600 yards in 25 minutes, then met a friend at the lake - my superfit black belt friend- and we rode 12 miles in about 45 minutes. Not back to back, so not technically a brick, but my hair was still wet from the pool as I was riding around the lake.

Thanks, TE! I seriously would not have done this without your help. And thank you for noticing, Jones. You rock.

My weight took a roller coaster ride this week. I went up 2 lbs practically overnight on Sunday. I'm sure it was because I rode every single day on my last week of vacation, overloaded my muscles and my body was holding onto water. I had 2 rest days from exercise when I went back to work Monday, my legs recovered from feeling like lead weights, and I am back down to just below where I was last week: 127.4

My goal for the challenge is 126... What do you all think: if get down to 126.8 will it count? (my real goal is 120 - which I hope to reach by the end of January, at the rate of about 1/2 lb a week, which seems to be my average)

I didn't even bother weighing myself (I did last monday and was at 242.8) today. I have had a very rough week... my friend sarah...age 30 just got diagnosed with a reocurrance of breast cancer. (she was 25 the first time). Her and her husband are my main biking partners. This has brought my own battle up close and personal.......even though I am fine...is the shoe going to drop?

I have had a hard time eating right....I will try to get back on track next week.

Txred9876, so sorry to hear about your friend :(. I hope she responds to whatever treatment is next for her. And I understand your own apprehension. My DH has been in remission for 18 years (had a bone marrow transplant in 1991 for a recurrence of non-Hodgkins's lymphoma), but hardly a day goes by that I don't think about it and wonder if it's gone for good.

I've been feeling kind of blah for the last week. Sort of like I'm on the cusp of a cold, which would be my first in years. No motivation for any kind of exercise, so I've been a sloth since Monday and eating stuff I shouldn't. I dreaded getting on the scale, but - surprise - it read 133 this morning. I don't get it, but I'll take it. Maybe I just needed the rest.

Hi everyone! I haven't checked in here in a while since my accident and injury a couple of months ago. Yesterday, I stepped on the scale (first time I could do so weightbearing and w/o a cast). I have lost 6 lbs in the past two months. I knew I had lost a couple, but this was a total shock! I know I'll probably regain a little as the muscle mass improves in my legs, but that's OK. So, to date I have lost 82 lbs, two below my official WW goal. 138 lbs. It's been at least 25 years since I've weighed that little.

Hooray! :D

Congrats indeed skinimini. That is outstanding. I too would have only gained. In fact, that's why I am in the position I am in. It is a lot of excess weight gained when I dislocated my knee and took way too long to get it working right again and get me exercising again. The depression of the knee made me eat even more. Too many years ago for it to be an excuse now though.

Hi all!
I kind of fell off the weigh-in's. In fact I have no idea of my weight. I suspect I am about 123--that is where I tend to stay. Add or subtract a pound or so--depending on the day!

I just had 2 weeks of vacation--enjoying micro brews, hiking and biking. (Ok, had the micro brews AFTER the hiking and biking).

I am just trying a new approach--and it does not involve the frequent dates with the scale--those always discourage me.

My new approach is to stick w/ the marathon training plan. Yes, I know, training for endurance is not the best way to lose weight. But IF I do all the runs as prescribed and I don't "over eat"...it could/should work.
And my once a week total body conditioning and/or pilates and maybe a spin on the bike.

And I am not "dieting". I am cleaning up my eating. I can do it. I have done it.
Eating out is only once a week. (not like 2 and 3 times or more!)
But not great sacrafices that just lead me to then over-indulge. Being smart. I do know what I should and should not eat!

And insteaad of the scale, I am going by how I feel and how my clothes feel. (In fact today my pants are comfortable!--and they are not even my "fat pants").

Go kudos to all that has lost weight and good luck to all. I think I'll sit the nex challenge out. Maybe I'll be surprised (one way or another) when I step on the scale at the end of the month!

There go my pretty blue cells.

Back up to 239, alas.

Okay, excuses: I just started a new blood pressure medication that's not as effective a water pill as the one I was on last week, I'm a day or two away from my period, I traveled by plane cross country on Thursday to my mother's house where healthy eating means there's fresh peaches in the cobbler.

I'm so puffy I can't get my rings off, so I know it's just water weight, but jeez. This up and down is wearing me out. This morning my face was so puffy my eyes were swollen shut. I'm not kidding. It took hours for that to subside. I looked like I'd been stung by a hive of bees.

Excuses, excuses, excuses:
I'm not looking forward to tomorrow AM. Last week I ate horribly and then started my (.) on Friday. Then I took DD to Chicago for a fun girls trip--lots of eating out. Some thoughts on this, this lovely almost-Halloween morning:

1. I get naked every Friday with you people on my mind.
2. I'm back in the pretty blue cells range. Yay. (thanks to a return to the other medication - 6 pounds gone since Wednesday night.)
3. I would like to make a weight-loss goal that is not helped along by pharmaceuticals - seems like cheating - but at the moment, those are what is keeping my blood pressure under control, so I need the medication. The weight loss (it's only water, anyway) is just a bonus.

I'm trying to figure out what the next goal should be. 225, I think.

What is the "Eating Clean" program?

K

channlluv
10-30-2009, 08:27 AM
I was in Florida the last few days with my father, who has terminal cancer, and his wife, my stepmother, is trying all sorts of things to try and help him. He's under hospice care and is on some pretty heavy duty pain meds, but she's also giving him Essiac Tea (based on the alleged cure of cancer patients in the 1920s by a nurse who never wrote down her recipe and who supposedly got it from an old Indian cure -Dr. Andrew Weil discounts it as not supported by clinical studies, but they're drinking it every day), and other herbals, and this Eat Clean diet, which is supposed to be great for weight loss, as well as chock full of cancer-fighting nutrients.

She gave me the book. It's low on bread and such, high on fresh, organic veggies and lean meats, and frequent small meals. You fill a cooler every evening with your next day's meals and carry that with you to work so you're never tempted to eat out while you're on this program. I haven't read it all, but it seems well-balanced (unless you need the carbs for long rides or something - it's not designed for high-level athletes, I don't think).

There are at least three levels of commitment, depending on your needs, but it's pretty much a non-clinical detox using food.

Roxy, is that Tosca Reno's book? GREAT recipes in it. I use them ALL the time! It's a super sound way of eating for life - truly. When I'm on track, that's how I try to eat. I have trouble eating as often as she recommends because there are parts to my day where I just cannot have food with me, but the meals/nutrition are extremely healthy. I now have all of her cookbooks and so far, every single thing I've tried has been delicious! (and the photos are great, too!)

I'm making a batch of the clean eating granola this weekend, actually. :)

170.0 for me this week - back to where I started!

Yes, that's it! I was trying to remember her name. I don't have the book here with me to check it. Thanks so much for the recommendation. I think I'll read it more carefully and look at starting it as soon as we all recover from the flu here.

Well, I have to admit that I am glad this particular challenge is over. It was not a very successful one for me! :(

SO - opinions please - this chart has one more week to go, to make it 8 weeks. But, it is kind of helpful to have it not span 3 months technically. So, do we end this one here at 7 weeks, and I start a new thread and new chart for next Friday? Let me know what you think.

Okay by me. I sure appreciate you doing this. I may not be losing the weight I want each time, but having the weigh-ins at least makes me think about what I'm eating and how much (or little lately :() I'm working out. Thanks Possegal.
