Fall is a great time to do something good for the earth and party for a good cause. In the spirit of the Fall Equinox, the Mount Rainier Bike Co-op, in collaboration with the Community Forklift and the Prince George's Community Pool, is hosting a Life After Labor Day festival. Proceeds will be used to build a new storage barn for the Co-op. Our fundraising goal is $5000.

1:00-4:30 Bike Trailer Building Workshop: Build yourself a "customizable" bike trailer with materials supplied by the Co-op. Register by Sept. 3rd. $40-$60.

5:00-8:00 Potluck Party & Silent Auction featuring DJ Joe & the band Chance Gardener: Bring your friends and family, chow down, sing, dance, and bid on all kinds of items ranging from bikes, bike accessories, pool passes, and gift certificates for local area businesses.

Great to hear! I used to live in Mount Rainier, and helped set up the Co-op. So glad it's still active, although I never thought it wouldn't be active--great energy and enthusiasm there.

Catriona-are you going? I would love to do the Build-A-Trailer workshop.

I'm debating it - I'd love to see what type of trailer you make for $40-60! and I definitely don't have a trailer. I better decide today.

Well, I just left a message saying I wanted to sign up for the trailer building workshop, so we'll see what comes of it!

I find the idea of building a trailer quite fun, I just am not sure I would ever use a trailer. I haven't done any bike touring, and have been avoiding getting into that expense.

I'm hoping to build one that my dog crate will fit on, so I can haul the dogs around a bit or maybe haul a big bag of dog food home from the store. I doubt I'd ever go touring with it.

I would use it for grocery getting and such. Maybe hauling of mulch. Divingbiker, if you go, take some photos and show them to me when you come to Richmond!

Holla.
I think my cell is working now.

does that mean you want me to call you or you wanna build a bike trailer with me?

Shoot, if I still lived there, I'd have a TE party before or after the event. My timing is always way off.

you really only have to drive 1.5 hours to get up here. And if you need a place to stay, if you promise not to be an axe murderer, I'm sure one of us can put you up.

And i'd even take you kayaking.

Thanks, but I'm a bit concerned about running into the ex-husband at that event. He still lives in town and that would not be a good scene. I better keep my distance.

I think divingbiker can vouch for my non-ax-murderishness. Right??!!

Woohoo! I'm gonna build a trailer next weekend! Zen and/or Catriona, are you going to be there, too?

Tulip, how would I get there via the bike path?

And I'm pretty sure that Tulip is not an axe murderer. At least I hope not.:) (Am leaning against doing the half mary, Tulip, at least this year. No desire to train for it at the moment, but that could change.)

I'm not... I couldn't really think of a reason to have one and decided it would just end up taking up space.

I have space but shouldn't be adding more large items to the house until I move so, no :(

So did anyone go? How was it? Did you build a trailer, Divingbiker? I did not see this until after-the-fact. I could have directed you there on the Sligo Creek and Anacostia Trail system.

DB - just let me know about the race. The invite stands if you change your mind. No axes, promise!

Zen, where are you moving to?

It's not until the 13th.

It's this coming Sunday, and I got directions from the guy who called to confirm. It's so close, just a few miles down the trail! And I'll be dragging my new trailer behind me on the way home.

I'm still contemplating the race. I'm reading a book now that's motivating me, so I may sign up yet. Will let you know.

Meeting Shiloh (and Tulip, of course) should be motivation enough to do the race!

Whoops, I misread the date. I hope you have a good time. I made it from there to your house, Divingbiker, mostly on the trails except when I had to go up some huge hill (on a street) off of Sligo Creek. It's a nice ride. There's a cafe across from city hall if you want any tea or lemonade or coffee or lunch. It's called Artmosphere and it's pretty neat.

Into the big city.
Frederick :D
I have to sell this house first, though :o :(

Yeah, that's the hill I have to ride up to get home every night. I'm used to it now, so most days I'm not even breathing hard at the top.:D

The bike trailer workshop was fun! Three of us built trailers, from a design the leader came up with after looking at various trailers on the internet. It's wood (yay! no PVC!) and is pretty solid. I have to figure out how to make the connector not rattle (rubber washers or wrapping a bike tube might work), and I'll add eye hooks when I figure out where I want to put them, but I think it will serve my purposes (whatever they turn out to be) just fine. Here it is:

You can pull me in the Frederick Christmas Parade.
It will give me an opportunity to wear my tiara!

Nice job, really! You could strap all sorts of things on there!
Makes me wish i had gone :o

Very cool indeed. Is it very heavy? How's the bike coop doing?

It doesn't seem too heavy, but I was tired after riding the 5 miles home dragging it behind (into a headwind). But that could have been a result of the 7 miles I ran this morning. It's not feather-light, but not a tank.

Co-op seems to be doing ok, but I don't know how to judge. A lot of people stopped by during the day, even though it wasn't open except for the trailer building. It seemed like quite a few people were showing up for the potluck. Did you live in that neighborhood?

tulip
09-13-2009, 04:46 PM
Yes I lived there for three years before I moved to Richmond. There are some great old houses there.

That trailer looks great... Maybe you should paint the trailer with some waterseal to protect the wood?

I'm wondering if it's just a shell. If it had full accouterments it would be hella heavy.
