This is a new plate, thanks to WABA. I said I'd never pay extra $ for a specialty license plate, but I caved.

Not only caved....but caved early, judging from that LOW issue number! ;)
Very cool. I'm hesitant to give up my blue heron, however. Hmmmm....Heron on a bike? Save the Chesapeake AND the cyclist??? Waddaya think?

You had to send in the paperwork to WABA and they held it till they got 25. I waited until my registration renewal came, since it was due within a few weeks, then sent the application to WABA, so I am kind of surprised I got such a low number.

Do you have to be a WABA member?
My renewal is due next week:(not enough time.
I'll get one next year for the jeep :)

I called, and they're going to e-mail me whether you have to be a member (when the guy running the program gets into the office), but the guy I talked to didn't think so.

I had just renewed mine when this one came, and it's not a problem to replace it. All you have to do is return the old tag to the DMV, which of course presents its own set of hassles.:)

Very cool.

And if I saw that low-number plate out on the road I would automatically assume some official or dignitary was driving.

Ha! I can't imagine there are too many dignitaries who would drive a 10-year-old station wagon with bike and kayak racks on it, but I puffed up my chest just a bit when I read your comment!

You do have to be a WABA member. Here's (http://http://www.waba.org/areabiking/MDPlates.php) the scoop.

Edit: I can't get the embedded web link to work on my computer. If the link above doesn't work, here it is: http://www.waba.org/areabiking/MDPlates.php

Very cool.

However, if youare ever driving drunk or erratically, everyone will definitely remember your license plate number so that they can call the police on you.

I cheaped out when it turned out you had to be a member. That just seemed lame.

Cool!

I told them I was interested when they first were looking for the 25 minimum, but ended up getting tri club plates before these became available.

I've got one of those stickers on my car that tells the cops to pull it over and verify the registration if they see it out after 1 am or something like that, because the lame-o person who owns the car is supposed to be in bed by then. So not likely I'll be driving drunk or erratically, and if I am then the cops probably should be called.:p

My WABA membership is good through 2011 so that was already a sunk cost for me. I like what WABA does, so I'm happy to pay the membership fee.

I joined One Less Car so I could be notified of Tour du Port every year, but I haven't gotten around to joining WABA. Which is why I never know about things like this.

Same here. Well...until 2010. Now...if I'd only get around to joining MORE....another group whose efforts I support, only not with the wallet. :o

Oh, I'll probably get around to joining eventually for other reasons... My knickers just got in a bunch at being required to join. In order to get the special chesapeake bay license plate or any of those, you don't have to join & pay membership to any chesapeake bay group. So I don't see why this should be that way - if anything, you're putting an obstacle up when the reality is that the more of these license plates on the road the better.

I think 7rider or someone posted on here about this a month or two ago.

In most cases, the groups sponsoring the special license plates tack on an extra fee so they get their money that way; WABA didn't charge extra for the plate. One way or another, you pay for the privilege of being part of the group.

The state of Maryland sponsors the Chesapeake Bay plates, so I'd reckon that's why there's no group to join. All the other plates require that you go through the sponsoring group (Zen posted the link this morning.)

I'm used to virginia. There's like 200 special plates. Most of them are an additional $10 a year in the registration fee. Some are $25 a year and the organization or university that it's for gets $15 of that after the first 1,000 plates are sold.

You just get on the DMV website or go to the DMV and get the plate through there - most of them don't require membership proof or anything like that, but the purple heart or police group or whatever ones do.

WABA wasn't listed on MD's DMV site. Wonder if you could get away with it in person?
