I know TrekTheKaty will appreciate this as will other ladies out here who ride with their DH and are frustrated because he is a better rider and takes off and leaves you in his dust. This summer, I started my campaign to "ride my own ride" and I have declined to chase him when he does his fast pedal away from me. He invariably circles around and comes back to me.. still it p*sses me off!

I have been working with a coach and doing some great interval training and stepped up to riding 6 times a week for at least an hour per day. It's starting to pay off!

Tonight, riding with DH and it was time for me to start a "Tempo" interval. I took off to get my heart rate up to the training level and ended up hitting some high speeds (at least for me!!) of 24 mph. DH got a bit of a late start behind me, didn't catch my wheel and I left him in my dust! I looked behind and could no longer see him, but I had to keep going or I would ruin my interval. When the interval was finished he caught up to me, stating he was "tired" after last nights ride and decided not to chase me down. Yeah, right *snort*.

This story may seem silly to some of you, but I will bet the ladies out there that chase their DH every ride are sitting there smiling. Revenge is sweet.

That's great that you're getting better. YOu don't need your husband to become a better cyclist if you have already found a coach/personal trainer nor should you allow him to be a "competitor" to you or vice versa unless this sort of thing never affects your marriage over time.

I'm probably reading too much into this since this sort of competitive spirit between myself and dearie doesn't exist,..we each have quite different strengths that we would be idiots to "compete" against one another on anything. We would each die laughing at each other.

Woohoo!!! High five!

Once I beat the guys to the top of a hill and was so tempted to throw down the bike and dance around, pointing in their direction. Nice!

I don't compete against my DH, either. We ride together. Sure, there are days when he pushes me and I have a fast ride, which makes me feel good, but most of the time we are together.
I know he's faster than me and he always will be. He's stronger, bigger, etc and there is no way I could exceed his speed even if I was "training."

Yippee!!!!

Yes, I get frustrated that mine is faster. He seems to not realize that what he thinks is helpful is sometimes hurtful (e.g., as I'm panting up a hill, he'll zoom by saying "this is easy"). It doesn't impact our relationship, but it's nice to know that sometime, someday I might be able to catch him:)

Girls, please don't read anything sinister or threatening to my marriage in this post -- it was just for fun.

I've never tried to compete with my DH, because he's been riding for 10x longer than me and he's got more stamina, better control of his heart rate, etc. I am his biggest fan :D:D:D

But when he leaves me on our rides, I used to get a lot of anxiety at riding alone, sometimes in an area where I didn't know the road and traffic patterns. Then I would get angry at him for leaving me. Next would come a defeated feeling that I would never ride well enough to either keep up for him or have the confidence to ride solo.

It was just hilarious last night to actually drop him -- I am positive he will not let it happen again as he *is* extremely competitive.

tctrek - we feel your pain, we feel your joy. We've all been there. So go ahead continue to gloat, enjoy the moment.

'cause we know in our hearts it's fleeting

My bf woke up the other day and said let's have a race on Monday.

So, yeah, I know the competetive thing  firsthand. The race hasn't yet happened, but believe me, I will be carrying a frame pump (if you don't know why, watch "Breaking Away" ;)).

My bf really is horrible to ride with. He sucks my wheel, and I can NEVER get a draft off him because he's so squirrely. We only ride together a couple of time per year, because he's a bit of a slacker. That makes it even more annoying, since even with no miles under his belt, he's way faster. Oh, and when he leaves me at the bottom of a hill, then complains how he can't climb, I want to ring his neck.

I have been able to drop him on occasion, though. He has no stamina. Because of that, if the race ever happens, it will be at least 40 miles long. Pretty sure I can beat him over that distance.
