Awww... item is out of stock. :( I thought about getting one for DH and his long training rides, and for me when I want to go off touring on my own.

Not to stir the pot any more, but the 705 is awesome. I bought by FDH one last year and this has saved us on so many rides. You don't realize just how many times you have to stop to orient yourself or check the map on long rides. This beeps just before a turn. Oh, and I think you can download the maps for free (as opposed to buying the map card).

No free maps. If you already have a Garmin mapping unit for your car, moto or boat, I think they'll give you unlock codes so that you can use the maps on the 705. But I bought the bundle, so I'm not sure about that.

Now, where's my 310XT... :rolleyes:

Be aware that the one that Colorado C is selling doesn't have the detailed maps - that will be another $70-$100 depending where and how you get them.

Yep - thanks for reminding them all.

I didn't get mine from CC, but I did buy mine w/o the (detailed) maps at first b/c I wasn't sure I really realy "needed" them and just wanted the cool toy.

$399 is what I paid at a different online venue...and thought it was a steal.

Later, I did buy the maps card. No biggie really. Still saved money. :)

Regarding free maps, google Ibycus usa.

The map set is actually pretty good, although it doesn't cover every county in the us yet.

The Ibycus website states that you have to have MapSource installed to run their maps.

There's a free MapSource updater on Garmin's website, but it specifically states that it will not run unless you already have a MapSource product installed.

I've spoken to Garmin tech support about that in the past - all I wanted was for the maps I purchased on the chip bundled with my 705 to appear in GTC. They told me no, I'd have to purchase a MapSource product separately.

Even if you buy the map disc from Garmin, you need to get unlock codes from Garmin tech support to be able to transfer the maps onto a chip readable by the 705.

It appears that it may be possible to update to a later mapset from Ibycus (although honestly, as the wife of a photographer and friend of a number of writers, I'm sensitive to IP issues), or add Ibycus street maps to purchased topo or marine maps, it does not appear that it's possible to use the Ibycus maps unless you've already purchased Garmin maps. And I don't know where you'd get the unlock codes to allow the 705 to read the chip.

I have done this, as I'm using the Ibycus maps on my 705, and I have never purchased the garmin maps.

To be perfectly frank, I don't recall which utility I used to load up the Ibycus maps, although I believe it was indeed the Mapsource updater. When I get home, I can check on my laptop and see what the tool was that I used to load the maps into the 705 via the SD card. I seem to recall that Garmin Training Center was all that was needed to install mapsource, but then again, I installed all the maps about 9 months ago, so things may have changed since then.

And the card I was using is a standard micro SD card from Best Buy. Nothing pre-purchased or preloaded with maps.

Ok, updated:

I just installed Training Center onto my computer at work (probably not the best use of company time), then followed up by installing the Mapsource Updater. This works because GTC comes with "PC base maps" which are the default maps for the Edge series of receivers.

Once you install GTC, you can install Mapsource, then you can install the Ibycus packs and life will be good. :)
