I had a "little" mtn bike crash 2 weeks ago. I had several bruises and my right shin swelled up. I went home and iced it. I thought all was good as the pain went away and all that was left was a medium sized bump. I took the first week off and did no exercise at all. Then went backpacking for 3 days. My leg hurt a bit but it was not too bad. Well anyway my lower shin is quite tender to touch and it hurts to walk now. I am thinking it is a bone bruise. Has anyone else here had one? I asked the medical director where I work what he thought and he had no strong opinion.
I have not been on my bike for 2 weeks, gosh I miss it.

I had one on my knee cap and the top of my tibia (I think). It was tender for about 6 weeks, but didn't hurt unless I put direct pressure on the spot (i.e., I couldn't sit on my knee). It didn't hurt walking, though - so not sure what to tell you there.

I am thinking that you might have had a small bleed into the muscle next to the shin, the tibialis anterior. This is the muscle that pulls your foot up as you walk to keep it from dropping. It takes time for that blood to reabsorb into the body and that can cause the bump and the pain. Hope it feels better soon.:(

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking that may be a possibilty as well. My leg below the bump has become discolored and the discoration is is moving toward my foot. I was talking with some of my co-workers (PTs (I am an OT) )and they had no idea...one wanted me to go get x-rays but I don't think anything is broken. I hope within the next week to be back at it. I would love to go out for a run or walk but it hurts way too much. Oh well, could be worse. I will just take some naps and enjoy my down time while it lasts.

I had a similar injury--there was discomfort from Sept until the following May.
Aggravated, no doubt, by the fact that my dog always hit that eaxct spot on my shin when jumping up onto my bed. It hurt for so long that I finally adjusted my behavior and moved my leg whenever I saw my dog coming.

I have no medical type advice, but I hope it heals soon. :o

when I crashed after a pothole found itself in my path's way, I banged up my right knee pretty badly. There was major bruising, swelling, and after the initial soft tissue injury subsided, I was left with a palpable bump. I asked one of the physicians in my swim club (that club has about 10 physicians!) if it was a bone chip and he said it's nothing to worry about and it'll go away on its own. And it did eventually go away, though I still have a dark mark around the wound that turned into a scar.

I am a mt biker, and I have them all the time. They can take months to go away. Every time I complain my DH says " well, stay on your bike":)
