I've only been riding since the beginning of this year and I've dropped from 139 pounds to 126/127. I started off riding an amf bike but now I have Nina, my Trek road bike. I'm biking between 40-50 miles on the weekends alone and have recently developed an ungodly craving for hot fudge sundaes. I am a vegetarian and I honestly try to limit my sugar intake but I find myself trembling like some sugar addict if I don't feed this craving! I've tried eating yogurt with granola instead but there's something about Smucker's Hot Fudge that really does it for me. You know? I feel really dirty after eating the sundae, so dirty, and not in a good way either. I can't go on like this, please help me, I need an intevention!

There are the small single serving ice-cream treats in your grocer's freezer case. Some of the low calorie ones aren't too bad so long as you're not allergic to nutrasweet.

When a neighbor of mine, who was morbidly obese and newly diagnosed type II diabetic, started on her new diet for life - her doctor advised her to stick to her new diet 6 days a week. On day 7 she could have what she wanted, cake, ice cream, french fries, whatever. Diets are bound to fail when you are deprived completely of treats. She found her cravings dropped off, and she would choose small sizes. And she lost weight. Over time a lot of weight. When she reached her weight goals, she'd be awarded with bouquets of flowers by her doctor.

So, Omachine, have your ice cream, just in smaller portions, and not as frequently. Get smaller serving containers or single serve size. No more 1/2 gallon containers of ice cream in the house for the ev-I-l fudge topping. And don't eat it straight from the squeeze bottle either! :o (not that I'd know absolutely anything about that!)

Admittedly sundaes never turned me on --not even as a kid. I'm not keen on any desserts with huge dollops of sticky, super sweet sauces.

Like what bmmscland said, just choose a small, light dessert for yourself once a week or occasionally.

Perhaps quality gelato or frozen yogurt with an unusual flavour. Or a pastry made from filo / phyllo (depending on your spelling preference) with light fruit or custard filling.

My dessert preferences have always leaned on lighter tasting baked goods and gelatos. I did go through a period of cheesecakes ..now I don't enjoy them much.

And eat this dessert around lunch or abit after, not supper time. More time to burn it off during rest of the day.

Satisfy with lots of wonderful fresh fruit for supper time instead. It's summer time!! We're gorging ourselves on abundance of local raspberries, blueberries, etc.

Ben and Jerry's has little single servings that I get at Wal-Mart for a dollar. I keep about five of those in the freezer and they really satisfy my craving.

Life is too short for bad ice cream.

Those single serving multi-packs are a joke to me, I ahve no self control.
I will admit to being on a McDonald's caramel sundae kick for some time now. But McDonald's is five miles away so it's one sundae at a time.

Food is so important and with many meanings in our life.

Maybe Smucker's reminds you of a favorite aunt and the hot summer day when you'd just graduated 1st grade and she served you a sundae made with it.

Smells are important. It's said that is the last sense to "go". Maybe when you ride you recall a pleasurable event long forgotten except chocolate syrup now made with high fructose corn syrup was there. :cool:

But the event was important to you and now when you're happy and deservedly proud of your achievements you reach for choco syrup.

Go ahead and have some. :) When I ignore a really specific craving it comes back to bite me so to speak. Last week after a workout I wanted tofu, braised tofu in black bean sauce with black mushrooms to be specific. ;) No rice, just the tofu and 'shrooms.

There's a Chinese eatery near work, they make a good dish but they were super busy. I went next door, there's a good salad bar and made a salad with tofu drizzled it with Thai dressing.

Just as good, right?

Noooo, it really messed up my food plans for the day :rolleyes:

After a hard workout I want protein (ice cream has protein :cool:) water (it's got that too :)) simple and/or the better for me the complex sugars (check! :)). Experiment with what rewards, refreshes and rebuilds you. I prefer chocolate milk to any newfangled recovery drink, everyone has different pre-ride breakfast of champions .... choco syrup may be your thing.

Is it the sundae you want or the choco syrup? Is it the color of the bottle or the art of perfectly drizzling it? Would the perfect piece of fair trade organic varietal chocolate hit the spot just as well? :confused: www.theochocolate.com

One of the many remarkable things about TE is there's all kinds of information out there about nutrition for male athletes. But not that much for women, especially for women athletes past oh maybe 30-40. The information just is not there. But we find it here! :)

Trek420 you were right about the Smucker's tapping into a certain memory for me. The smell of the fudge reminds me of spending time at the shore with my grandmother and the two of us making chocolate pudding! I also realized that a great deal of the trembling I was experiencing was just sheer hunger, that after a big ride I tend to crash and not eat for the majority of the day. Case in point, on Saturday I biked 24 miles, came home, crashed, got up a few hours later, showered and raced from one activity after another but ended up eating for the first time around 5:30pm. I know, I'm a knuckle head!!! but I will get it together and actually eat and hydrate properly during the course of the day. Thanks for listening ladies and for the amazing feedback! Wow, I read your original post twice thinking that you had dropped 139 lbs since January! Holy Moly, I thought! That ain't natural! But I got it now.

Enjoy a bit of ice cream now and again! My criteria are that both the ice cream and the fudge must be really, really good. I hate Smuckers fudge (tastes like chemicals to me), so I only go for the really good stuff, with really good ice cream. Otherwise it's not worth it to me.

The exception for me is the occasional ice cream sandwich from the neighborhood ice cream truck. There is nothing high-quality about those but sometimes nostalgia wins out.

No, I definitely didn't drop 139 pounds, just 12 pounds. I didn't realize I was losing until everyone started telling me how thin I looked. One co-worker actually asked me if I were purging because she refused to believe that I lost weight by riding and walking everywhere. But once I showed up at a meeting that was located across town via my bike, she finally saw how serious I was about riding.

First of all, congratulations--12 pounds is great! Secondly, I've always felt that, if you have a craving for a particular food, eating any amount of any other food isn't really going to satisfy it. Based on how active you are, I see nothing wrong with having a fudge sundae when you want it. The key is to pay attention to portion size, and to possibly make some healthier substitutions for less-healthy ingredients. I absolutely love Edy's Slow Churned Vanilla Ice Cream--it has 1/2 the fat of regular ice cream, and 1/3 of the calories. A half-cup serving of this, with a spoonful of hot fudge and chopped walnuts, etc., is a pretty sensible option, in the scheme of things.

That being said, sometimes I'm much more satisfied with just a little real ice cream. Have what you're truly craving, and don't regret it!

I'm not sure whether this has been mentioned yet, but do "the world smallest hot fudge sundae!" which you make in a shot glass. A melon ball sized scoop of ice cream, tablespoon of hot fudge... It's a great alternative! They make them at an ice cream shop just down the street from me.
