I finally felt like my chest was clear enough that I could run. I wanted to take it easy so I only did 2.2 miles. It was all right. Still tough for me to get enough air. But it was nice to get back on the road. It's been awhile.

Did another long run with my friend Maggy yesterday in prep for the Lean Horse 50k that is now only 39days away!! We went 18miles during the heat of the day to try to acclimate to those warmer temps.
The first 9miles went by so fast, we both felt pretty comfortable. The final 3 it started to get tough. I spent two days stripping shingles off of my sister's roof last week and my whole body was feeling it. To my surprise though my quads gave me no problems and that is usually the spot that gets tired/hurts on long runs. :)
This Wednesday I have the chance to run a 5k race that supports a running foundation. Looking forward to it!! Hoping for a PR since my running is so much stronger this season, but we'll see how it goes. I will keep you posted.
V- Did you have phnemonia? Running when you can't get enough air is tough!

I don't think so. My temp never got above 99.7 or so. But I was hacking up the grossest stuff from my chest for more than a week.

I had pneumonia with a very low grade fever; you don't have to have a high one. What you are describing is exactly like I felt. I was well enough to go to work after a couple of days, but it took me weeks (4-6?) to feel well enough to ride. I tried a couple of times and had to turn around after 5-10 miles or so.
Be careful with the running.

I got in a 4 mile run yesterday before periodontal work. Will be unable to run for a few days. Kinda bummed!

Went for 3.1 mile trail run in Estabrook Woods. I haven't been on a trail run in about a month, since there's been so much rain. I am trying to baby my knee with the road rash/bruise and the thought of running on pavement does not appeal to me right now.
It was wonderful. I realize now I don't do well running in direct, hot sun, at least until I acclimatize a bit more. This trail is wide and clear, but totally shaded. There were quite a few more mud bogs than usual from the rain and a tree down across the trail. I didn't see any mtb tracks, which was good, because I think the trail needs to dry out. And, there were no bugs in a usually buggy area.
As I got to the turn around point, I saw an older gent ride by me on an old Trek bike, in jeans, no helmet. Oh well. Then, as I was running back (the way back is much more pleasant; about a 2% grade, down), I heard the unmistakable voices of a group of riders. A woman was leading a group of 13 riders and it felt so weird to hear someone yell, "runner up," and they were talking about me! Oy, a few of these riders had mountain bikes, most had hybrids, and one guy was on a very nice road bike . I mean, this is an easy trail, but there are rock gardens, mud bogs, a small stream, and a couple of logs. I know I'm a wuss when it comes to these things, but it was interesting. A woman at the end of the group had a look of fear on her face, she was out of control, her sun glasses were half way down her face; I could empathize.
I restrained myself from adding on another mile loop so I don't overdo it.

3.25 miles this morning. Felt much better than Monday's run. I considered doing another loop to make it 4.25 miles, but my ankles and shins need to get back into a running routine I've discovered. I'd rather ease back into this than get an injury three weeks before my HIM.

The heat in Dallas, TX is a COMPLETE beat down right now.
I ran last night at 8:45 PM- 100F degrees. It was miserable. Made it 2.5 miles.
Heading to the gym to run 4 miles on the treadmill tonight. It's even hot in the gym though. I just pour sweat off me.
It's VERY HARD to motivate to run in this kind of miserable heat. Even more so when I know I have to run indoors.

This is one of those days when I wish I had a coach.
Then I realize that I can't justify it to myself - and that it would be perilously close to taking my training way too seriously. But still.
Sore all over from a tough week, including some two-a-days. Today was supposed to be tempo run day. Instead, I just went out for 4.5 at a very relaxed pace, just so that I wouldn't be skipping a running day.
It felt like a good decision - as it was, I kind of struggled in my aerobics/strength class this afternoon. But I know there are times when pushing through it brings great results, and I just don't know how to identify those times to myself.

Hi OakLeaf,
What kind of two-a-days are you doing? What are you training for? You were smart to skip the tempo to do an easy run.

Hi OakLeaf,

I'm training for a half marathon in October and a tough two-day back-to-back century ride in September. I teach aerobics and strength training two or three classes a week. I don't want to skip my ride/run on days I teach, because I need to keep building. I'm not that far off, I'm on schedule, but I can't get too far behind.
I just want to finish the half-marathon without embarrassing myself, and finish the ride period. So speedwork isn't that important to me.
But then iron woman KSH just said in the other thread that you do have to push through the tired and sore...

Your body will get used to it and you will just continue to get stronger. Good luck with your training!

PRed tonight's 5k race with a 24:12!!! Which would be my first time running anything under a 8min/mi. It took every bit of focus & determination I could muster, but I am wicked excited now!!! :D
RR to come, just had to share!!

Did a very slow 5.5 miles last night with the baby jogger. I ran with someone slower than me . . . so it was slow.
Even slower run tonight with baby in jogger and child on bike. She gets distracted about every 1/8 of a mile. It will be a good walk/run for 45-60 minutes.
My weight has not budged in two months since having the baby. I really wish it would start to go down, jogging with this extra weight is taking a toll on my body. Plus I feel extra "floppy" in my mid-section. I bought a slimmer belt to wear when I run so I can't feel all the jiggles, it sure is a pain.
I'd like to start thinking about training for some 10ks and half mary's, but I can't focus on training right now until I start to get my weight down :(

Well... just make sure you aren't pushing through extreme fatigue or injury. Otherwise, sore muscles and being a little tired... press on.
It's amazing what our bodies can do when we set our minds to it. :)
Good luck!

So I guess I should've done that tempo run after all. Ah well.
Really I consider myself a reasonably good judge, and one thing I'm not is a total wuss about pain, elevated HR, etc. As I said originally, it was just one of those borderline days when I'd liked to have had a professional's advice taking into account all my parameters. My legs are still sore, but I did extra hills on last night's ride to make up for it. And I'll do ladder intervals on my run today, mmmkay? ;)

Great job on all your runs, ladies!
Oakleaf - I think you're wise to listen to your body. Sounds to me like you're very motivated and stick to a plan, but allow yourself to modify occasionally when necessary. I try to do the same thing. Follow a plan, but pay attention to sinals my body sends.
I'm tickled pink right now. This morning I did my first ever 10 mile run! WooHoo! :D I was just under 11-minute miles, which was a comfortable, easily maintainable pace. My calves started to tire around 8 miles, but not so badly that I ever considered needing to stop.
On the nutrition front, I also had a breakthough. I usually struggle with anything solid, but this morning I had some ripe bananas in the house, so I decided to try one pre-run. I made sure to east it slowly, and finished it around 20 minutes before the run. And, TADA!! No stomach cramps! Yay! I also took in 100 gel calories at both 30 minutes and 70 minutes. When I finished at 109 minutes I was hungry but not bonking. So it seemed about right. WHen I move up to 11 miles in August ( I add 1 mile each month to my long runs), I think I'll try nutrition at 30,60, & 90 minutes.

I thought my run last night would be really easy since I had my 3 yo with me on her bike now that the baby rides in the jogger.
Boy, was I wrong. This girl had me doing sprints and intervals--one of the most challenging workouts I've had in awhile.
Me: Slow jog
DD: C'mon Mom! Go faster! You can do it!
Me: Picks up pace to fast run
DD: (huge grin) You're doing it, MOM! You're going fast! SUPER FAST!!
Me: Runs even faster
DD: Mom! You're great! Keep GOING! C'MON MOM! YOU'RE DOING IT!!!!!!!
And then a 30 second rest before the next sprint.
DD to person walking past on bike path: My mom can run SUPER FAST!
I'm glad someone thinks I'm fast. Super fast.

I need her to coach me...
I ran 2.3 miles, with about a half mile walk before and after. This was a hilly run, my time was better, finally, inching back to where it was about 3 weeks ago, about a 10:55 pace. It's hot and humid, so I went out at 6 AM.
Then I went on a 30 mile (slow) ride with a friend.

I went to the high school track for ladder intervals. This was the first time I'd run on the 1/4 mile oval and I was a little afraid that I'd be bored silly... but I had plenty to think about.
Still sore, but it was a day to "push through," even though I had a hard time maintaining the pace towards the end of the second trip down the ladder.

Did something new this morning. Got up at 3:30am so that I could be on the road & headed to a state park w/ my running buddy for 16miles of trail running.
:D It was so beautiful!! The run while not fast, lots of hills & this was our first real trail run, was a ton of fun!! We will definitely be doing this again. I managed to navigate the trails effectively, our route only brought us to 15 miles so we stopped there, took off our shoes & went up to our knees in the lake for an "ice bath". Worked well.
Glad to see two pages of running posts this week, mean we ladies are logging some miles. Good job!! :D
Susan- Congrats on the 10miler!! Happy to hear the nutrition issue is coming together.
Lime- Great story about DD. I love that!

I'm not usually sore after my long runs. I just get that nice tired feeling in my legs that lets me know I got in a good workout.
After Friday's run, same thing. Yesterday (Saturday) I did a 72 mile ride, which would normally not overtax me at all, but I definitely noticed that my legs were not quite as peppy as usual.
And today? hoooweee, are my quads sore! I guess that's the result of the two back to back. I've been trying to do my long runs mid-week to avoid this sort of thing, but this week it just didn't work out.
I've decided to stick to upper body work today. :D

Might be time to start doing the ice bath after your long runs. It can make a big difference.
I did a 4.5 miler on Sunday AM. I wanted to do 6 but I'm just not feeling up to it right now. I'll try again next Sunday. I am getting frustrated that my pace is so much slower than it used to be, but it also gives me something to work towards.
