Brake-in tune up

Can I do my own brake-in tune up (the one required after a few rides)? Does anyone have experience with this? Does it require special tools? What all does it involve (I think mostly stretching of cables and maybe a few other things)?

I love learning how to do more of my own maintenance but if it requires a lot of special tools, then it might be better just to take it into the shop.
