Another two month period for us to keep track of our progress and encourage each other. This one will take us from our first weigh in this Friday (or whatever day works best for you) 10 July to the 28th of August.

So let me know here if you are in for the next 8 weeks and what your goal for the 28th is. Then at the end of the week, let me know your starting weight.

I'll set up a second page with measurements if wanted, though there didn't seem to be overwhelming interest. But I can set it up ( I think it would be too much for the same page as the weights) for those that are interested. Just let me know what measurements you are looking to track.

Sign me up! The goal is 148.

If you do measurements, I will gladly record mine each week. If you decide not to, it's cool. I can put them on post-its all over the wall behind my desk :D

go to work early to do grading and stuff
bring less work home (better if none at all)
spend less time on the internet
sleep early

its gonna be tough. I'm breaking the first one already. its now 12.30am...

Keep 'em coming folks. :) No problem, I enjoy helping out and since my job=at a computer all the time, it is a nice little break from my day to go in and update.

So on another thread someone recommended livestrong.com and thedailyplate. I signed up and today was the first day I tracked everything. I really like it. I'm seeing things in black and white there that I guess I knew, but I'm still shocked by. I'm hoping that I'll be able to make some changes since I really don't like seeing bad things in black and white like that. Though I was back at the Dr today over this asthma cough that is hanging on going on 7 weeks now. Oh it makes me tired and lazy and miserable. Today I'm in full on whine mode. ;)

I have not done this for a LONG time since the past few times I really did not make any progress. But since I am sitting here and my work slacks are a bit snug I need to really concentrate. And I are really concentrating on getting back on a real training plan. So now is the good time.
I'll weigh in later and set official goal. Right now I suspect I want to lose 5 lbs in 8 weeks (it is an 8 week block, right?)
Also, will I post my own weight now...or we submit here and someone else keeps chart up? I think things may have changed since I last did this.
I CAN DO THIS!

Possegal

For any new folks, or returnees :) (I hear ya on the snug pants!)

Post in this thread and I'll take the numbers and put them in the spreadsheet. I will post a link here to the spreadsheet on googledocs.com and everyone will be able to go in and read it (hopefully :))

I have it set for 8 weeks with the dates set for Friday. But don't worry if you are on a schedule where you weigh in on Saturday or Sunday or whatever. I tend to like Monday because I seem to do better over the weekends and that gives me a little more time to lose a bit.

So let me know your goal for the 8 weeks and this weekend weigh in for the first week. I'll put that info all into the spreadsheet. And don't worry if you are late to post - heck, sometimes I'm late to check! And if you'd rather not have a goal, that's OK. Basically - this is to help you, so whatever works best for you, is OK by me.

Ok, I wasn't going to join in this time, but I just realized that this challenge ends the day my parents arrive for their visit. I had already mentally calculated that I wanted to be down 10 lbs by then, so I think I'm going to go ahead and join.

I'll weigh in tomorrow and post both that weight and my goal then.

And if anyone is paying attention, I am still following the principles of 'Normal Eating'. I'm working on making better choices (easier to do now that our garden is exploding) and I'm also about to outline a new workout plan. My goal is to get back into shape - weight loss will just be a pleasant side effect. :D

GLC, I just finished reading Normal Eating. I knew most of what the author was writing about, but it really helped seeing it in print. I'm hoping to work through my problem areas - eating when bored and not being as cognizant as I should be as to when I'm full.

I usually hover around 146, don't know why I shot up to 151 (but had been holding steady there, so it's not a fluke reading). Ok, my starting weight is up...but whatever - it is what it is: 173.4

My chest is so swollen and sore right now that I'm having a hard time sleeping - so I know that number is somewhat inflated.

Anwyay, my goal for August 28 is: 165 lbs.

five one - I think the ideas that are helping me the most are 1) there are no off limits foods (makes everything 'bad' less desirable) and 2) the idea of the 'pause' before eating. I'm learning a lot about myself even though none of the concepts she presents are really new to me. I think its the approach that helps the most. Between that book and "In Defense of Food", I'm finding it a lot easier to make the right choices because I want to and not because I 'should'...you know?

Sounds like we are on the same page, so to speak, AND reading the same books. The 'pause' concept is what will probably help me the most - if I can just get into the habit of doing it. I tend to graze while cooking dinner and on any given day could eat a meal's worth of calories before sitting down to eat dinner. Maybe I'll make a bunch of labels that say, "Pause and think about it" and stick them to all my grazing foods.

OMG - me too! I swear that the days we eat out, I actually consume LESS calories because I'm not grazing before the meal! It's definitely my biggest problem time of the day.

I have no good solutions. If your label idea helps, you'll have to let me know!

Hey have any of you had your Lean Body Mass tested? If so, how did you have it done and who did it?

Veronica
07-10-2009, 10:42 AM
My trainer uses calipers every 4 - 6 weeks to get my Body Fat. What's not fat is lean mass. My lean mass always comes in between 116 - 118 pounds. I use the 116 number when I'm doing any calculations.

If I used 118, I'd be down to 18% BF. :D

Thanks for the offer Martina, I don't mind you having access :) worry not. But I'm good. Got my work done for my meeting.

I must admit, I messed something up in the programming in my copying from last month (almost did have to yell for your help Martina, in the end I just stared over). So that is part of the delay today as well.

I've been using the livestrong.com daily plate thing all week. It really is helping me I think. Due to the feeling like crap thing, I haven't done any actual moving :) but I think I ate a good bit better and dropped 2 lbs since last week (though never sure if some of that isn't due to transient things, only time will tell). Now if only I can get moving around more. Hoping to this week!

Good luck to one and all. Let me know if I missed anything, new folks are welcome at any time, just jump on in!!

I had my lean body mass tested this morning.

Mine was at 135--which doesn't surprise me. I am the same height as a few of my friends, weigh 15-20lbs more but wear the same size.

They use calipers and do a BIA--a maching that hooks up to you and sends little electrodes through your body.

Let me know if folks are having trouble viewing the page - either through the first link or the html link. I did search a little through their help section and it looks like a lot of people were having the trouble that we encountered a few weeks ago, not being able to get in without signing in, though I think we figured out that when I published it as an html we were OK. Just want to be sure. Someone sent a request for access and I don't know who it was, and unless you are going to edit, you shouldn't need access to it and should be able to view it from one or both of the links. But let me know if that isn't working. It's always possible I've messed something up. :) Nothing is beyond my ability in the messing up department!

I'm trying to calculate my caloric needs based on my activity level. Let me know if you think this is high or low!

On Livestrong.com at the Plate they have a calculator. I can't decide if I'm very active or extremely active-- I do exercise almost every day... typically a 20 mile + bike ride, a 3 mile run or stair sprints.

But anyway, I'm 5'6'', 158 lbs and it's telling me that in order to lose a pound a week as an extremely active person I can eat almost 3000 calories. Or to lose a pound a week as a very active person it's about 2400. That seems kind of high. Could it be that I haven't been losing that much weight because I haven't been eating enough? (1500 net calories including making up for calories burned by activity)

Possegal
07-11-2009, 07:03 AM
I really don't know much about what level of calories anyone should be taking in (though I agree those numbers seem high). But I do know that it is not uncommon for people to plateau because of not getting ENOUGH calories. Seems sort of counterintuitive, but it isn't really when you understand the body's way of conserving energy stores. So although I have no idea about you specifically, I did want to add in that it is possible that someone isn't losing weight due to not eating enough. (enough of the right things of course, if only I was not losing due to not eating enough Reese cups and Mt Dew.) :)

Veronica
07-11-2009, 07:16 AM
I think it's high. When I plugged in my numbers it said I needed 2551 calories to maintain my weight. That's about 900 more than I eat/day.

They do suggest you use a lower activity level and then track your exercise separately. That might be more accurate.

Veronica

Reesha
07-11-2009, 07:39 AM
Yeah... that's what I thought!

Although, I think I wasn't getting enough protein before for the amount of exercise I was doing and made a grocery trip specifically to get protein (tuna, fat free cottage cheese, chicken breast and eggs!) so I always have it around!

I think it's weird that on the Daily Plate when you enter in your exercise it subtracts it from the calories you've already consumed so you have to ingest the same amount of calories you just burned to reach your total. I mean they must have some kind of sound reasoning behind it, but I wish someone would explain why, you know? It seems weird. If it tells you you need 1600 calories a day at a certain activity level, and then you add your activity for the day (let's say you burned 350 calories) and it's saying now you need 1950 calories... does that not seem counter intuitive?

nolemom
07-11-2009, 02:44 PM
I did a hard 50 miler today so it said I could eat over 3000 calories (supposedly burned over 2000)- I'm with you, it doesn't make sense. I'm trying to stick much closer to what it said with no activity. It does seem to be helping me make wiser food choices since I have committed to logging everything that goes in my mouth.

So, count me in. Current weight: 164. Mini (two month ) goal 150. Ultimate goal, 130 (haven't been there since 1992).

I've just started recording pretty much everything on fitday.com, shucked my cruiser for a Trek 7.5 WSD, and I've been riding 50 miles a week (for the last two weeks), anyway, with just minor aches and pains.

Laid off in May, so I now have no excuse not to ride (and it's been glorious, what it's done for my out-of-work anxiety, you wouldn't believe).

Time to get back the spiritual and physical health sapped by crappy work experience. And hopefully, interview for jobs much lighter.

Hi All!!

Back after a 12 day vacation in Victoria BC & San Juan Island. It was great! But, 12 days of restaurant meals (and not recording WW points, since it's a total crap shoot with restaurant meals) has taken its toll. Despite 375 miles of bike riding, 3 runs, 1 kayak trip and miles and miles of walking while siteseeing, I'm still up 3 pounds. But woohoo it was soooooo worth it. I truly believe I could live on scones. Really. I'd be 500 pounds, but I think I could do it. :D

Soooo, my starting weight is 131 pounds. Goal is 125.

Wishing everyone a successful challenge!

Since I weighed in early last week before my long weekend w/ my sister (you guesed it lots of eating, drinking--no biking). So this weeks weigh in will be tough..since I weighed myself this weekend and I am UP from my starting weight I submitted. BUT I'll see if I can get back down to my starting weight. Just makes my goal a bit tougher. But the tight pants is killing me!

I"m not playing this month, but thought I would update from the last challenge. I've been off the bike for two weeks since I blew up my knee on the 400K, so thought for sure I was putting weight back on. I tried on "the dress" this morning, and it zipped right up, and now, is so loose on top that I'll have to wear a strapless bra under it to fill it back out. Can't win... :D

Put in the updates. I have to say that using the daily plate thing really is helping me make better choices too. I'm not obsessing so much on the calorie numbers since I'm not sure what to believe as far as how much to take in. But I'm so less inclined to eat something like candy when I know I'm going to be putting it down there. :) And that second Dew of the day hasn't been seen since I first started logging. :)

My current weight this morning is 217.4. My ultimate goal is to get back to where I was 10 years ago at 175, but for this challenge, i'd be happy with any loss at all. Hopefully reaching 210 by the end of the challenge isn't too unrealistic.

I had a VERY rough ride last night - combination of dehydration and heat, I think - so I'm not 100% sure that this weight is accurate. I have absolutely been eating better, but I still don't feel right, so I might be dehydrated still.

Now that I'm back from vacation, I need to resume my daily early morning exercise habits. I only got out early twice this week. :o This morning I ran 10 miles, so hopefully I'm back on track. Next week I'm aiming for 5 early morning workouts. 3 runs, 2 swims. That ought to get my weight back down under 130, which was my WW goal weight. Since meeting my WW goal in early May, this is the first time I've been above it and it needs to be nipped in the bud NOW. ;)

Earlier in the week, I was down to between 143 and 142, but that was a couple of days post a metric century. It's been a very stressful week, so maybe that's the difference.

I started back to graduate school again for an add-on certification to my Masters. It's been so long since I've been in the whole academic frame of mind--too much reading and writing and I've been very busy business-wise. Finished the course yesterday, so things will be back to normal for a few weeks. Big time travel schedule coming up--Utah next week, Vermont the week after, then my vacation to the beautiful Pacific NW. I hope my weight stays stable.

So using the daily plate, I clearly had 2 weeks where the net calories indicated weight loss and the scale each time had 2 lbs down. Then I went back home last weekend so it was hard to track while there, came back here, and I was up 5 lbs, which held steady to today. How is that even possible? Has made me very discouraged, I must admit. UGH! I'm starting to think I need to go to a nutritionist or something. I need to do SOMETHING. :)

I've been having this problem for about 2 years. Down 2 pounds, Up 3 pounds, but never getting any real progress. I opted in and out of this weight loss challenge out of first hope, then frustration.

I did find a nutritionist a couple of weeks ago. He put me on a 1450 calorie a day "diet", but what is most important is that my calories must be 65% carbs, 13% protein and 22% fat. I am riding my bike 15-20 miles 5 days a week. I take one rest day and I do one super-easy recovery ride a week as well. I am not doing any weight training at this time.

I've eaten this many calories before, but I've never eaten a diet so low in protein. He also asked me to try not to eat anything processed and to try swapping out Soy Milk for my normal 2% fat milk.

After 2 years of non-weight loss, I was skeptical. It took me a few days playing around with food combinations to hit the magic 65/13/22 ratios... to my amazement and surprise, I've lost 3 pounds in the first 2 weeks!!!

I was a little hungry and a little sleepy the first few days -- I assume from eating more carbs than usual. I'm eating fruit at least 3 times a day, lots of veggies, yogurt, Kashi cereal, salads, almonds and graham crackers for a snack. Ditched my favorite protein bars.

This is my off-the-bike calories. I can eat 250 calories per hour on the bike and it doesn't count.

So ladies, I might be back in the next challenge -- I have 25 pounds to lose, which will take a while. Fellow hopeless ones, you might want to try this ratio of carbs/protein/fat and see if it helps you too!

It came with my coaching services from Carmichael Training. If there is a cycling coach in your area I'm sure you can get a recommendation. I really think that if you ride a bike a lot, that your nutritional recommendations should come from someone who understands what you need to ride and what you burn when you ride.

I had asked around and was given a name of a nutritionist from some of the triathletes I knew. I was very disappointed. She gave me information I already knew and it wasn't very customized other than to do a body fat percentage, weight, etc to come up with a daily calorie count.

Now I see a holistic doctor who works with a lot of athletes. I kind of stumbled across their office. They are outstanding. I really struggle with weight loss as well.

They look at everything. Hormone levels, balances, imbalances. Toxins in the liver. Thyroid. Diet and nutrition. Exercise programs. They never gave me a one-size-fits-all formula for weight loss and fitness. It's a customized trial and error process that they are committed to--unlike my GP who, after I complained I couldn't lose weight on a 1400 calorie diet, said I just wasn't trying hard enough. Seriously.

Of course, I'm very fortunate. My doctor was a part of Lance Armstrong's medical team for a few years at the Tour de France. Can't get more specialized than that . . . .

I think you hit right on my worry limewave. I'm a medical scientist, I'm pretty informed on biology and the body and yadda yadda. I fear I'd end up with someone telling me all the things I already know. I've never had such a problem with losing weight. I know I'm older now, who isn't :), but I just can't stop thinking that something more is going on here and I can't figure it out. My TSH goes up for a few blood tests, then comes back to normal so my GP says all is fine. I did finally say - well then why can't I drop an ounce of weight. She doesn't know me well enough to know that I'm not a total couch potato though I admit sometimes I get so bummed about zero results that I don't even want to go out and move it. Plus I've been sick with a cough for 2 months now, that isn't helping. OY.

I keep joking that people shouldn't ask me "how are you", because I am Kimmy Whiner now and I'll tell you exactly how I am. :)

I just can't figure out who to ask to find someone around here that won't be a waste of my time and be more complete in how they view this all. I may ask my Dr if she knows anyone, but since she seemed to shrug off the comment I made, I'm not optimistic. I like her otherwise though, but this issue I'm feeling very alone in. Except for all of you guys, of course. :)

you guys can shoot me for writing on this thread but there's an article in the NYTIMES right now that i found very profound; here's two excerpts:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/02/magazine/02cooking-t.html?ref=dining

Consider some recent research on the links between cooking and dietary health. A 2003 study by a group of Harvard economists led by David Cutler found that the rise of food preparation outside the home could explain most of the increase in obesity in America. Mass production has driven down the cost of many foods, not only in terms of price but also in the amount of time required to obtain them. The French fry did not become the most popular “vegetable” in America until industry relieved us of the considerable effort needed to prepare French fries ourselves. Similarly, the mass production of cream-filled cakes, fried chicken wings and taquitos, exotically flavored chips or cheesy puffs of refined flour, has transformed all these hard-to-make-at-home foods into the sort of everyday fare you can pick up at the gas station on a whim and for less than a dollar. The fact that we no longer have to plan or even wait to enjoy these items, as we would if we were making them ourselves, makes us that much more likely to indulge impulsively.

Cutler and his colleagues demonstrate that as the “time cost” of food preparation has fallen, calorie consumption has gone up, particularly consumption of the sort of snack and convenience foods that are typically cooked outside the home. They found that when we don’t have to cook meals, we eat more of them: as the amount of time Americans spend cooking has dropped by about half, the number of meals Americans eat in a day has climbed; since 1977, we’ve added approximately half a meal to our daily intake.
Cutler and his colleagues also surveyed cooking patterns across several cultures and found that obesity rates are inversely correlated with the amount of time spent on food preparation. The more time a nation devotes to food preparation at home, the lower its rate of obesity. In fact, the amount of time spent cooking predicts obesity rates more reliably than female participation in the labor force or income. Other research supports the idea that cooking is a better predictor of a healthful diet than social class: a 1992 study in The Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that poor women who routinely cooked were more likely to eat a more healthful diet than well-to-do women who did not.

My husband and I totally agree with the information in the article. We go weeks without eating out. We are both very sensitive to salt and it is not unusual for us to gain several pounds (temporarily) after eating what appeared to be a healthy meal at a restaurant. That is why I am concerned about my upcoming trip. I will be eating out almost all of my meals. I do a lot of my food prep on the weekend and then we put meals together from our reserves during the week.

Mimi - there is definitely something to that...we have absolutely become a 'fast food' nation (fast food meaning pre-prepared items...not just McDonalds).

Unfortunately, I can guarantee that the diet he proposes won't work for me! I didn't get fat solely by eating out and I won't get thin simply by eating in...not when my favorite way of using up zucchini is in zucchini bread! :p

I eat out quite frequently and I am still loosing weight. I think it all has to do with ones choices, food and otherwise. I have cut out any and all soy (unless it was hidden and I didn't know it). I have lost quite a bit the last two weeks. I have also tried to stay active. I had to join the gym because its just been to hot to do much of anything.

tracking everything I eat on livestrong.com and if I know where I am going out to I look to see if their nutritional stuff is online so I can make better choices.

175.6. I start my vacation Wednesday so I won't be here to weigh in for two Fridays. I hope I can eat in a reasonable fashion while away, I would really like to lose some weight on vacation. I think the break from the scale will do me some good, I get a little compulsive about weighing myself and I am really trying to change that behavior.

Congrats Tina. I probably could eat out more if I avoided the soy products, but my weakness is sushi or anything Asian. I am tracking at livestrong also and it does seem to be helping. I am 45 pounds lighter than my top weight (8 years ago), but I had regained 25 pounds. I've dropped 25 since last September but would really like to drop another 5 pounds. I'm a mindless eater so having to log all my food at least makes me think about it (sometimes after the fact unfortunately). I enjoy following everyone's progress and the tips and comments are very helpful.

TINA - Congratualtions!!! Gold star! :D

Possegal,

Please put me at 128.5 for last Friday.

My mom was in town all last week. She's on WW too (down 18 pounds in 10 weeks. Go Mom!), so we ate very few restaurant meals. We carried healthy sandwiches, salads and fruit on all of our day trips. So, we ate better, and spent less, to boot! (There *was* a yummy berry/nectarine cobbler that Jeff made from a Cooking Light recipe, but we won't talk about that... ;) )

However, if I'm ever going to make my 125 goal (instead of bopping about between 127 & 130), I need to really buckle down and eat in reducing mode again, instead of in maintenance mode. But, I confess that after all those months of reducing (and the associated "deprivation"), I really *like* maintenance mode. :D

But if it's ever going to come off, it's going to have to be via calorie control. I get plenty of exercise already! (107 miles yesterday with 7000+ feet of climbing ).

While it's really fun to type that number, I'm fairly certain I'm just dehydrated. I did my first 11 mile run yesterday morning and I'm behind the curve on re-hydrating. I've only seen that number one other time on my scale, 6-7 weeks ago, and I think I was dehydrated then too. :o

Hopefully I can lose it "for real" on next week's bicycling vacation. Discipline at the rest stops will be my challenge. OBR has some of the best rest stops of any organized ride I've ever done, and it's really easy to overindulge on all the goodies they put out for the riders.

You are on vacation. However, in spite of that, the calories DO count. But a week of small indulgences will not totally dis-rail you. Enjoy your vacation! While in Maine I ate a lot of Maine specific food that is not exactly healthy - cream horns come to mind. :D I always want to come back weighing the same as when I left; and that made me go run some mornings while on vacation.

168.9 for me today. :D

It's working, it's working! In fact, I saw that number, blinked twice, and then smiled. Then after finishing the chores, I *almost* decided to stop at a coffee shop for breakfast on my way into work. I managed to eventually talk myself off the ledge. I did pull a fresh loaf of my own zucchini bread out of the freezer and a slice of that will be my 'splurge'. Sooooo much better (tasting and for me) than coffee shop pastries/baked goods!

It's all about choices...and making the right ones often enough to see results. ;)

I only eat them in Maine, same thing with Whoopie Pies. There's something unique about the filling of Maine creme horns.

It started out as a health decision. I am at high risk for developing Type II diabetes due to my three rounds of gestational diabetes (including one pregnancy that required insulin). I had always done the yo-yo diet thing - lost 40 and regained 25, etc. After my brother passed away unexpectedly at 47, I decided to make real lifestyle changes. I began to focus on healthy eating and decided to try bike riding since my DH loved it so much. He had lost 40lbs by eating right and cycling like a maniac. When I began to seriously cycle in September of last year, the weight came off and I could still eat enough to not feel like I was on a diet. I now ride between 140 and 180 miles a week and have become a decent cyclist. In December of last year, I finally hit a normal BMI for the first time in over 20 years. Now, I want to lose the last pounds to be a better cyclist. I am happy with the way I look and feel great, so I am just trying to focus on making wiser food choices. I still struggle with the emotional eating issues but I find being part of this group helps me to think about the long-term goals instead of the immediate craving.

ABeezles, I should give you the benefit of the doubt, but this really seems like a trolling question on a thread titled "July/August Weight Loss Thread." Clearly, before opening the thread, you could tell that most posters would be discussing losing weight. Why is it necessary to question their motivations?

Personally, I have absolutely no shame is saying that I am trying to lose weight primarily (although not solely) for cosmetic reasons. At 5'6" and 137ish, my BMI is 22, which is perfectly healthy. However, I'm heavier than I've been my entire adult life. I'm 29 and my "set-point" has been in the low 120s since maybe age 18. I had a number of stressful life situations over the past two years and put on over 20 pounds (I was up to 144.5). I'm still not "fat" by the "average American" scale, but you had better believe that I notice the extra weight all the time (not only because I ballooned from a size 4 to a size 10, but I notice it when I wake up in the morning and I"m lying on my arm, and my arm isn't lean and hard, and I notice it hugely when I climb hills on my bike and when running). I also am considering a marathon in a little under a year, and I want to drop the weight before I begin serious training so I will have a chance at my goal time. Everyone has a right to decide her own ideal weight without a complete stranger sticking his or her nose in and suggesting that it's unnecessary, shallow, or disordered.

I never suggested that any individual's weight loss was unnecessary, shallow or disordered. And indeed, beside my theory for health at any size I am sure there are people who genuinely would like to lose weight here for health reasons.

And despite you stating that I am sticking my nose in, I haven't directly commented on anyone's post, merely stated that—far out—there is a number fixation here. And just that in my experience (and in that of a number of female AND male cyclists that I train with) this has resulted in them doing damaging things to themselves.

I am not accusing anyone of doing damaging things to themselves on this forum, as mentioned above, I am merely suggesting that perhaps there is another way at looking at things. That is all.

I suppose I shouldn't continue this discussion here since it's a distraction to the thread. However, I would again draw your attention to the fact that the thread title is "weight loss challenge" and it's laid out in the first post that a spreadsheet will be maintained to help motivate posters to achieve their goals. It's nice that you have an approach that works for you, but it's inappropriate for you to barge in on this thread where posters are supporting each other in working toward their goals and suggest that it looks like "numbers fixation."

If you want to start your own thread about your "fit at any size" theory, go ahead, but this thread is really not the place to proselytize.

How does this work? I can't ride right now, but I want to lose weight very badly.

We just keep a running spreadsheet here with our weights, and our goal for the 8-week period. People check in every week and I update the chart. For me, it sort of helps me be accountable (though so far I've not been too successful, but I still believe I will be) and also folks here are all in the same boat so they all have some good advice and always a lot of encouragement.

We do this in 8-week increments, so as we near the end of this one, I'll post a new thread that will have the next 8-weeks and people will post if they want to join in and I'll add them in.

You can join in any time though, just by giving the current weight. You can give a goal weight too, but some folks find that doesnt' help them and we're OK with that too. Basically, just here to help in any way. :)

Perhaps not, but honestly, coming into THIS particular thread and questioning our motivation is a bit rude.

Yes, in theory, exercising and eating well should make us all healthy individuals. And that's great if you've figured that out for yourself. But there are many of us who find that tracking our weight is as good a number as any to track. There is no 'fixation' here. Hell, look back over the past year of these posts and see how we all have been on and then off again. It's not an obsession by any stretch of the imagination - we are purely looking for camaraderie and motivation here.

And seriously, I'm 5'4" and according to BMI, I'm 30 lbs overweight. According to MY personal goals, I'm 40 lbs overweight. According to the charts and what is 'normal' for my height, I'm 50 lbs overweight. Gee... do I need to lose weight? Aestheticly? For health? For performance? Yes, yes, yes, and yes.

I went down to 240.2 on tuesday....but with much exercise and not using pump i know i have fluid where it should not be.....maybe I will get it all together this next week.

This last sunday I did my triathlon....shaved off 16 min from my last full triathlon (even though this one had an additional 400m+ run/walk/jog up the hill through loose sand and 3 more miles on the bike).

I took monday off... I thought I deserved that since during the triathlon I burned approx 4500+ calories!
Tuesday - light cardio - 30 min, 15 min light weights, my blisters still were not healed to do a bunch
wednesday - blisters doing a bit better but not totally healed 45min cardio, 30 min weights
thrus - 900 meter swim
today- I am meeting with a personal trainer ....so she can kill me..LOL
tomorrow is our mamma jamma training ride - not sure how far/which route I will choose....

Sunday will be my day of rest and house cleaning day!

Have a great weekend all.

248, but I'm back home from two months on the road and eating whatever we could find just off the highway, and back to my green smoothies and long rides around Lake Miramar and Fiesta Island. This weight will come off.

Two weeks of regular eating, not trying to count calories just eat food and I gained 4lbs. I am really surprised I gained so much. I mountain biked everyday for minimum 1 hour max 3 hours, several days I also swam, hiked or went tubing. I know I over ate at two meals but the rest of the time I ate what I thought was pretty healthy home cooked food and really did not over indulge. I think I need to keep a food diary even when on vacation so I can truly know what I am eating.
Anyway in a giant step backward I now weigh 179.6 here's to hoping at least 4lbs of it is water weight.
It's nice to be back on TE and be accountable again:)

That's definitely the story of my spring, summer, Jones. Somehow in the last week or two the weight finally decided to start melting off. I'm wearing jeans right now that I haven't fit since wintertime!

Reesha congrats on getting into your jeans. I just wish I could lose it as fast as I can gain it.

Weight for 21st Aug is 71.3 Kg - sorry I'm still in shock and haven't done the conversion to lbs. Can't work it out. No overeating, limited bread intake, no desserts or sweets or chips. I walked to work 4 of the 5 days instead of driving and put weight on! I was expecting perhaps to lose a little, certainly not put more on.

Definitely NOT going to make my goal. Might as well sign me up for the next 8weeks! Story of my life!

Crummy week. Haven't weighed in. Spent all weekend in bed with kleenex and chocolate.

But I am done with the pity-party. Back in action today. Will report on Friday.

Susan,
Same problem.
Road a fair amount this weekend. Tried to keep food intake moderate. I was HUNGRY...still not happy this AM. Not toooooo much up, but some. I suspect it will equilbrate tomorrow AM. That is why I DON'T like weighing on Monday. But I had to check in.
Riding makes me sooooooo hungry!

Sorry for the delay. I was in Philly for the Livestrong Challenge and although I had my laptop with me, I wasn't checking my standard websites very often!

OK, I know it is NOT Friday. But I have been up all week (weight that is). As usual I don't know if I'll remember to weigh or post tomorrow. So I'll go ahead and do that now:
123.4 (is that back where I started? --almost).
So I need to relook at this past week...food log, activity, etc. Darn it!

Friday - again!!! Latest weight 156.2. Lots of walking this week - lost a little:) I think I'm safe in saying (ahead of the end of our current challenge) that I won't reach my goal - yet again. Will keep trying though. Still walking to work.

back up to 216.2 this week. Once again not doing well for the challenge, but I haven't completely given up. I'll keep at it, and continue for the next challenge. Although the weight isn't coming off yet, I'm feeling stronger and fitter than I have done in a long time so something must be working...

144.

It's been a while since I've checked-in. Too much travel this summer. I had really hoped to make it to my official WW goal of 140 by Sept 1--that's definitely not gonna happen :( I'm just glad that I didn't end up gaining this summer. Perhaps the next 4 lbs will come off with the next cycle.

244.6

Got a new digital scale - not a Tanita, ha! - that measures all sorts of stuff for my birthday from my mom, including weight to the ounce, and allegedly, water composition, bone mass, fat % and so on.

So far it won't give me a reading on all of that, though. I keep getting and Error message. I think I'm just too fat to fit into their algorithms. It works for D*H. HE gets a full reading. He's lost 40 pounds in the last five months. Figures.

I have to get better at goal setting. I won't reach my goal this time and I haven't reached my goal in the previous two challenges. Maybe next time, will there be a next time? Please say yes.

Just out of curiosity (or something) I weighed myself again yesterday morning. 214.0!! The lowest yet this challenge! Could I swap out Friday's weigh-in with yesterdays? It was a far more uplifting morning....and a good motivation to do better this week.

I am going to start weighing on Mondays because I do that with another group and its hard enough to do it once a week let alone 2. I also behave myself more over the weekend knowing I have to get on that scale monday morning.

With that said... current weight is 241.8.

Congrats, Reesha!

I'm skipping my weigh in for last week. My parents have been in town and there has been a lot of eating and drinking going on and very little vigorous activity. I'm back on track today and will give myself a 'pass' to skip the weigh-in until 9/4. Let's hope I didn't do too much damage!

Thanks folks! I think there was a bit of a delayed reaction to all my summer's hard work-- although eating low fat has helped significantly too I think. Lots of asian inspired foods!

I have recently mastered Kimchi Jigae-- a spicy Korean stew with tofu, pork and kimchi (yum!)

I have not tracked food all week.
I have been very hungry all week.
My workouts have been less (not feeling well and week before my tri).

But I end on 122.4...so I was better than I thought. Not my goal. Not sure I can ever really get there. My body or my eating/activity level seems to settle here not matter what.

Count me in for the next one. I MUST get under 120. My real goal is to have significant wieght off by Nov. 2 when I begin my 16 week marathon training plan. I know how hard it is to lose weight when in a serious TP for endurance. If I could get under 115....by Nov. 2nd, surely that is possible?:o

Good job and good luck to all!:D
