I love to ride by the lake. Here are some beautiful herons I saw while riding yesterday. I would love to see views from others riders.

I see hills... they're everywhere

:D

Actually I see a lot of roadkill in the suburban area. :(

Yesterday while riding on a bike path I saw at least five bunnies! I am always worried they'll run into my path... a few years back I ran over a chipmunk's tail as he made a B-line across the road... I was horrified!

Truthfully, I don't notice as much since I've moved to the city. I miss my rides in the Adirondacks where I'd see fly fisherman all the time. The views were incredible. Le sigh.

Lakerider, it looks like you want to SEE what we see. This picture is from a while ago -- for whatever reason, biking isn't allowed on this particular road anymore. I suppose it's because it's a sort of private drive up to the Birds of Prey Center south of us, and I guess I understand, but it WAS a nice place to practice hill climbing without worrying about big trucks! I miss it as a place to ride. (I'm not sure how it would work to bike up and pay admission to visit the exhibits at the top)

For obvious reasons, it was NECESSARY to stop here to take this picture from close to the the top the last time I was up there, and it's a pretty good shot of the sort of views when we ride south from home!

Kano,
That's some beautiful blue sky!

mtkitchn,
I saw a snake while riding not long ago. Luckily, it was in the water.

Sometimes I stop to let ducks cross the road. Sometimes the ducks stop and let me to by. There's one little couple of ducks that I call Daisy & Donald. I always see them in about the same spot in the road. I've taken video of them but I don't have pictures. I'll have to take some next time I'm out.

This is a lonely road through a reclaimed coal mine.

I took this at 7:30AM on Memorial Day. Unfortunately, the iPhone camera doesn't do it justice:

Vancouverites will tell you that we live in a beautiful area, even though we grumble at times over certain areas do have traffic.

I have done a 90+ km. ride alone where I stitched together 2 different route rides together which includes all 3 photos/link given below.

Part of ride for pic 1, includes stopping by for a coffee after a few long hills on quiet roads (past highway intersection), http://forums.teamestrogen.com/showthread.php?t=32137 (see very last photo posted)

And also vistas below, which I see nearly daily on my early morning ride. In the winter (which we don't get hardly any snow for long at sea level), it is possible to be cycling when a few hrs. later or before, one has skied or snowboarded in the mountains that you see.

Made me smile.

These are pretty crappy since they are from my phone, but...

A picture of the local trail last year when it was flooded out (this trail goes about 50 miles end to end and crosses the WA-ID state border):
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g287/colby-digital/Photo_052808_001.jpg

A picture from the northern point of the ironman coeur d'alene ride (this is last year, but trust me it didn't change :p):
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g287/colby-digital/Photo_053108_003.jpg

I have seen lots of bunnies (especially at dusk), marmots (moreso in the mornings), and a few snakes (in the middle of the day), all of which are hard to catch on camera. Sometimes I see deer in the evenings but not really when it's this hot outside, and by the time I could get out my phone, they scamper (prance?) off. I have only seen a moose once (which is uncommon for the area normally, but we saw several this year), and that was running, so I didn't have my phone. ;)

Other than that, it's mostly cars, other cyclists, walkers, and runners, with associated children and/or doggies. I don't think you need pictures of those. :)

I see a variety of terrain, and sometimes a variety of weather on my rides. The Bay Area has a lot of Microclimates.

Lots of woods:

There are approximately 4 wild turkeys that sit in the field across from where we park. They are too far away to photograph. However, down the path, one took flight and barely missed the rider in front of us. Occasionally a few deer and lots of wooly worms, bunnies, and geese. But I doubled back to take this pic, JUST FOR YOU GUYS. Apparently these three herons can't read the "No swimming" sign. (Wish I'd had my camera instead of just my iphone).

The geese are hilarious. I'd swear that's Creve Couer Lake. They are very brave and hiss if you make eye contact. They've actually brought the bike riders to a stop and caused a back up! I've had one flap its wings at me, and I'm pretty sure they could knock me off my bike. Bike bells work best--I keep threatening to put one on my road bike;)

I live in Vegas, so all you see is houses after houses, cars whizzing by, and the high rise buildings you see on the Strip.

I'm not a strong bike rider yet to head out to Red Rock (which I heard was a HUGE accomplishment to beat due to the high elevations), and other areas.

Sadly - no Wild Animals like I see in the East. :-(

I've been in south Georgia for 2 weeks, riding almost every day. I have a hilly 20 mile route and every time I've ridden I've seen something. Yesterday was the best. Coming home, about 5 miles away I hear the trees/bushes rustling. I hope and pray it's not a dog. The next thing I see is a huge doe bounding across the street to the other side of the woods. Holy crap, the first thing I thought of was, "imagine my luck, being broadsided by a deer". Off she went, too cool. Ten minutes later I see a huge black thing in the road. Hoping it's just tire tread, no joy, it's a king snake. Off he went as well. I really need to start bringing my camera.

I didn't take my camera with me today. I was out early so I saw the sun come up over the treetops. I saw chipmonks, squirrels, lots of turtles (one crossed the road in front of me), ducks, geese, several herons (1 stood about 100 feet from me in the edge of the water when I stopped for a snack. That's close for a heron. They used to fly away as soon as they saw me coming, but now they're getting used to me and don't fly away so much.) There were boat loads of summer school students on a field trip. A little boy (about 3 years old) fishing with his dad waved at me each time I rode by. Lots of other people wave and ask me how far I've ridden as I go by. A bee landed on my hand while I was riding. Thankfully, it only stayed there about a second!

Highlight of the ride tonight, is more in focus. :D Smoked salmon nestled in sourdough baguette with soft mozarella cheese ...yummmmm. You see basil, the little green bits are actually sea asparagus which is naturally salty. A substitute in place of capers.

Every cliche of our area (except for soaring old growth trees, harbour seal, bald-headed eagle :)) is featured in these photos.

I want to photograph my route some time. Maybe tomorrow -- I will be riding in Jamestown, RI which is mostly scenic waterfront and marshes.

But my commute is an old rural highway that, as it goes North, becomes more and more "civilized". I then duck onto a bike path for 10 miles where I get to experience a 19th century landscape - backs of old mills, rivers, ravines, up into the city. It's a nice slow evolution and lots less shocking than driving from the middle of nowhere up into Providence. I will have to photograph it some time. I love it!

I found a dolphin on my ride today. Ok, so it was a tiny plastic dolphin, but a dolphin nonetheless. :p

Here are some pictures from the lake where I most often ride. It's sometimes really busy, but it's 10 beautiful miles of trails and just across the highway from my house. I really do love this lake and the trails there. Mind you, not all of the scenery is as pretty as the pictures here, but who wants to see pictures of parking lots and dead grass? ;)

Edit: ummm... sorry those are so big. I saved them at 50%, but they're still humongous.

I'd talked to their human mommy a few days after baby on the left came along, and knew that they were expecting the second any day. I'm amazed at how much baby number one has grown in a week! I rode past them again tonight, and the wee guy was still cute, and the bigger one was still lovely -- just looks so much more finished already!

And water and trees, lots and lots of trees:

http://s861.photobucket.com/albums/ab178/owlice1/?action=view&current=canal.jpg

I also saw Great Blue Herons, one Great Egret, numerous Green Herons, a goldfinch, lots of cardinals and even more grackles (impressive numbers of them, all together, flying off along the canal as I approached), Canada Geese, horse poop, innumerable gnats, biting flies and mosquitoes, and spiders, including two which decided to hitchhike on ME! (I HATE spiders!)

I heard a lot of different birds, too, including wood thrushes and peewees, and just the tail end of a veery song.

Some of the smells along the trail were wonderful; at one particular spot, there was a very sweet scent in the air. I do not know what it came from, despite looking around for its source. Not something I've smelled before.

Today I saw a guy mowing his lawn at 5:10am (it was pitch black out). Cracked me up!

DH keeps thinking that this is a good idea. I keep telling him that if neighbors don't, I will kill him if I'm waked by a lawn mower at that hour of the morning!

(once, he wanted to use the snowblower at 4 a.m. -- again, a really BAD idea!)

Yesterday at Chabot Regional Park in Oakland, CA. I had to quickly get off the trail to avoid getting trampled!

Saturday I came upon 3 adult wild turkeys tending about 5 youngsters. They were blocking my path and, having been smacked by a Canadian goose before, I slowed to a crawl and talked "nicely" to the adults. They soon herded their children off back into the woods.

Besides our beautiful scenery here west of the mountains I see snakes, lots of snakes. I miss most but I hit one again yesterday and I feel so bad, I really do! They are just garter snakes here in the NW (there aren't any poisonous snakes here). I manage to miss most but sometimes they are in the spots where the light and shadows play and I don't see them until they are right in front of my tire. Oh, and lots of deer and rabbits.

The squirrels were really busy today. It was fun to watch them running around with a nut in their mouth. I had to keep an eye on them for sure. Sometimes they were run right out in front of me!

I found out yesterday that swans carry their babies on their backs when it is rest time for the little ones. I wish I had had my camera with me.

I always assumed that once the cygnets were paddlers, if they wanted to rest they found a nice sheltered spot along the shore. But yesterday there were 3 cygnets sitting on mum or dad's back floating in the lake, while the other parent did safety patrol.

Pretty much a newbie, but already finding myself snapping pictures w/ phone while riding....

From the start of the Glacial Drumlin trail (waukesha, WI end)

Another shot from the same ride, somewhere between the 12 and 14 mile markers. Those holes in the bridge were a bit disconcerting - both coming and going over them.

At a park in Brookfield WI, where I was amazed to notice a sign for scuba diving. So surprised that I got off the trail to find the perfect angle (you can see the actual trail closer to the water).

Today we saw a dozen police officers having a conversation with a pack of hunters dressed in camoflage with shotguns and rifles on property next to the airport.

Not a good reflection on the local schools ability to teach critical thinking.

Last week, a golden eagle. Today, a Blue Angel. It's Air Show weekend a Miramar (where they filmed Top Gun). I ride a Lake Miramar, which is just a couple of miles away. I got buzzed by F18s, too.

I found myself worried about the young children living in war zones. Those jets really are loud- terrifying- and when they set off the bombs, too, well, I found myself thinking how blessed we are to live here, and wondering what kind if damage beyond the obvious destruction of buildings that our bombs may wreak.

That reminds me of the time I was riding on the bike-path and I saw a bunch of guys parachuting above me. It's surreal to look up and see people floating above you, especially when you're on a bike in the middle of nowhere.

I didn't get pictures, but there were sooooo many butterflies out this morning, even in the rain! Guess it's migration time for the Monarchs :)

Two days ago I saw a roadrunner less than a mile from my house... I always think those are funny because people associate them so much with Texas but I hardly ever see any.

Today I saw a road littered with Wooly Bears. So cute!

I also saw a man on a motorcycle with a sidecar. In the side car was a golden retriever with a bandana :D

Yay!!! The FAMOUS bunny statue!!!
Definitely a local landmark.

Reesha....the Woolie Bears were out in force today on our ride. Alas, I think a few met the wrong side of our wheels. Ewwww....

Today, I saw something I've never seen before....the inside of a wine glass.
Four of us head out to Sugarloaf Mountain, where a winery (http://www.smvwinery.com/) is located. The tasting room was open, and one of the guys wanted to check it out. "What? Are you serious?" SURE! So, we took a flight! Pretty cool.

We saw a new one today. A wolf. It was hunting. It was sunset and there were lots of little deer and pheasants are in the tall grasses. We stopped to watch for a bit.

Since May, we have also seen a silver fox, a few bobcats, and the obligatory deer, rabbits, and assortments of snakes.

Today's ride was an organized outdoor sculpture art viewing ride described here: http://forums.teamestrogen.com/showthread.php?t=34125

lst photo: part of a group art installation ..several figures crouching.
2nd photo: at a major botanical garden that was featured in ride as a stopover (if you had time.) Wonder if they will keep the topiary for the 2010 Winter Olympics early next year.
3rd photo: one of the featured bands at our cycling ride event at the end. They are a band that includes some Serbian songs. I love the accrodian design.

I was riding along and I saw one squashed in the middle of a road. it was a huge adult one. no picture coz i had no camera. It's so sad, these animals are very endangered, why can't the driver just slow down and let it pass??? They are very slow moving creatures and they are mostly nocturnal, so the accident probably happened at night when traffic was light. I saw it in the late morning.
The road it was on is a very well lit one, so i doubt not seeing it is a valid excuse... :(

an article with some information and a nice picture of a live one.

I went out for a ride at 5:15 AM today. I saw a lot of delivery trucks in Concord center; something you don't see during the day. I also smelled coffee very strongly, as I rode past Starbucks. I know a lot of people have commented on how they smell breakfast during their commutes, but this has never happened to me, mostly because the houses are pretty far back from the road. The other day, I did see a hawk, that swooped down really, really low as I was riding down the hill:eek:. It was a little scary.

It was a beautiful fall day in central Kentucky. A great day for a ride! Today I saw...

Lots of squirrels - one ran right in front of me and I missed it by only a few inches!

Kids playing outside - somthing I haven't seen much of lately. Kids don't play outside as much as they used to. Schools in my town were closed today which is why I had the day off. Kids were climbing trees, playing in the leaves, riding bikes, etc. It was great to see!
