I want this. Now.

Article on Gizmodo (http://gizmodo.com/5302110/lightlane-virtual-bike-path-to-become-a-reality)

It's apparently only a prototype now, but is in the works as a commercial product.

Interesting..and mesmerizing. As long as another cyclist behind you or car does it get too close accidentally because they are fascinated.

Did you read one of the reader's comments at the website?

The problem with this is that the majority of motorists will have no respect for the rights of the bicyclist to 'share the road'. The real solution would be to have the bike lanes painted on the rode properly and the space being designated to them. I can see motorists becoming disgruntled by the cyclist audacity to create their own personal lane.

I think that's fantastic! Can't wait to see it in person.

Yeah, I did think about how the coolness could possibly be a distraction. But I think, overall, it would be better than just the flashing lights (which can also be mesmerizing).

Interesting. I wonder why no one else ever thought of such a thing. ;)

I skimmed most of them and did respond to one guy who claimed that if cyclists need their own lane they should be taxed for them. The gist of my response was that bike lanes aren't so much for cyclists as they are for impatient/unsharing drivers.

That's a REALLY cool light. I don't think it would be much more distracting than the 3 blinky lights I have on me when it's dark. I must have one of those when it comes out. Too bad I can't make one for daylight use that would keep cars 3 feet away. :)

Now on a side rant:

one guy who claimed that if cyclists need their own lane they should be taxed for them.

This is what gets my goat. If getting out of paying taxes was as easy as riding a bike, don't you think more people would ride a bike? And why do so many non-cyclists think that bicyclists don't have cars? We have two cars, we just ride our bikes a lot. Plus, the whole $88 a year I pay in car tags doesn't exactly pay for the roads (or the filling of one pothole for that matter). The $2200 a year I pay in property tax surely helps more with that. If you're going to make stupid statements about it, then we should make people who rent apartments pay to use the roads and public schools since they don't pay property taxes that support such things (I don't really think that, BTW, but that's the same kind of stupid logic that goes with statements like that guy made). Stupid people. OK, rant over.

I like it. I would also like to see something that works during the day. I don't ride at night for vision reasons, but it would be great to have a big white stripe follow me during the day!
