My goal is to eventually start jogging/running. I've started walking daily for an hour(approx 3 1/2 miles) 4-5 times a week(plus biking 4-5 days a week). I'm starting out slow because I'm over 50(53) and overweight(I use to run about 20 years-50 miles per week). Do you think returning to running/jogging is an attainable goal? Should I up my walking time and/or frequency? How long following this type of schedule before I begin to jog, maybe September?

It's absolutely obtainable. I would start out getting good, cushioned running shoes and put in good insoles. I recommend this to save your knees and hips if you're "overweight". Then I'd start with a walk/jog program: 1 minute jog, 2 min walk, 1 min jog, etc. for no more than 15 minutes to start. Build up slowly and listen to your body. If something hurts, more than just muscle soreness, then back off.

If you like having a plan, there are some good "couch to 5k" plans out there. Just google.

Good luck!

Thanks for the input. I am just wearing some Nikes - a running looking shoe, not a good running shoe. I was going to buy another similar quality shoe, but have decided to invest in a good running shoe - I know the importance of a good shoe, since at my job I stand 10 hours a day.

Surgtech, I DID do this. I'm 55. Never ran before but have been riding 2000-3000 miles for the last five years, and also swimming for the last year. I got bored walking the run in a sprint tri, so took a "Learn to Run" class this past fall with a certified Chi Running instructor. I was 60 pounds overweight at the time (20 pounds down since that start in October). We ran a couple of minutes, walked a couple, for three miles, changing the mix as the eight weeks went along. You really are not coming fresh off the couch, since you already ride, but the couch to 5K program is not a bad way to start anyway. There's a guy who did an 8-week couch to 5K podcast that you can just download into your iPod and DO. Very helpful.

I'm running 8-12 miles a week with no injuries.

First thing to do before all else: get a real fit (doesn't this sound familiar) for the proper running shoe for your feet. Consider consulting a sports podiatrist or PT about running orthotics.
