This is probably a silly question, but here it goes. I have been having issues finding shoes that fit decently (apparently my foot is odd shaped - normal shoes don't give me any issues...:confused:). I found a pair of tri shoes that seem like they will work. Is there any reason not to get them? How are they really different than regular cycling shoes? Thanks.

I don't have tri shoes, but I think they're pretty much road bike shoes with extra features. DH's have a water drain hole in the bottom, a single strap closure for quick on/off, a little pull loop in back, etc. He's out of town with them at the moment, or I'd study them. I'm thinking the velcro closure wraps the opposite way - they open to the outside rather than the inside, so you can undo them while riding without the strap getting caught in the chain. Maybe the inside is more comfy for riding without socks? I can't remember what else is different, but I would think they'd perform pretty much like other road shoes - just designed for speed & efficiency & quick drying. They may or may not be more vented (read "drafty in cold weather").
I have odd feet, too, so I feel your pain.

Hi Keeper, fellow Texan :)
+1 about the drafty. That being said there are many shoe cover options that will fix that problem. Since TX is very hot for part of the year having a shoe that breathes well is a benefit during those months.
Be careful of the Pearl Izumi tri shoes with a single large tab for closure. My coach has them and is constantly annoyed that they are coming un-velcroed during riding. My Sidi road bike shoes as well as Sidi mtb shoes have never done that. So, just be careful if you're looking at the PI shoes.

Thanks. Drafty is good for Texas! It's actually the Sidi tri shoes that seem like they will work. The upper part seems more flexible, and I think that is why they are more comfy. My foot is not wide, but is apparently curvier than normal, which has been an issue. Regular shoe shopping is certainly more fun that cycling shoe shopping:p:cool:
